COLLECTOR'S EDITION The Hindu’s August 15, 1947 issue From its birth as a weekly in September 1878, The Hindu became a powerful instrument of the Indian national movement that sought to overthrow British rule. It was hence tting that when freedom dawned, The Hindu welcomed it with characteristic aplomb, deep thought, and skillful penmanship. The Hindu's edition on August 15, 1947, along with a 32-page supplement, was a tribute to the freedom struggle, with articles by some of the greatest names of that age including V.K. Krishna Menon, India’s rst woman legislator Muthulakshmi Reddi, and the great educationist K.M. Munshi. It also carried striking images of the arrival of Independence, and riveting news from that tempestuous time. The Hindu's leading article on the historic day was characteristically pithy and powerful. Titled "Red letter day'', it said: "By the grace of Providence India enters the comity of free nations today, an equal among equals. It is an occasion for rejoicing not only for her people but for all who value human freedom as an end in itself. So long as this country with her hoary civilisation and many-sided culture, her wealth of resources and matchless opulence of spirit remained in political bondage, that very fact constituted an implicit denial of those values to which the dominant nations of the West were wont to pay lip service." Early Pioneers of Telescopic Astronomy in India: G.V.Juggarow and His Observatory N. Kameswara Rao, A.Vagiswari, & Christina Birdie Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore 560034, India ABSTRACT G.V.Juggarow was one of the early pioneers of observational astron- omy in India who built his own observatory in 1840 at Vizagapatam (Vizagapatnam). His legacy was continued by his son-in-law A.V.Nursing Row till 1892, his daughter till 1894, Madras Government till 1898, and his grandson till it became inactive in early 1900s. Observations of comets, planetary transits, stellar occultations etc have been continued along with meteorological observations. Celestial photography was also started at the observatory. After 1898 the observatory’s activities were re-oriented towards meteorology. The establishment of the observatory, the personality’s involved and the final closing of the institution are described here. Key words: 19th century astronomy, private observatory, comets, celestial photography 1 INTRODUCTION G.V.Juggarow Observatory, established in 1840, was the earliest private modern Indian as- tronomical observatory that functioned till the turn of the twentieth century. Jesuit priest- astronomers were the real initiators of telescopic astronomy in India, particularly Father J.Richaud who carried out systematic observations of binary stars, comets, zodiacal light, dark clouds etc. at Pondicherry from 1689 (Rao et al 1984)1. Although it was claimed that telescope had been used on an earlier occasion by a visiting Englishman, Shakerley, in an unsuccessful attempt to observe transit of Mercury at Surat around 1651 (Kochhar 1989)2, the credit should go to Jesuits for making a real beginning of telescopic observations. -

Vagiswari and Christina Birdie It has been about 115 years since the establishment of Kodaikanal Observatory as an extension of the origi- nal Madras Observatory, which has evolved into the present Indian Institute of Astrophysics at Bangalore. It is also the first mountain observatory in India. Charles Michie Smith was the man who selected the site, established the observatory and directed it for the first 12 years. He was also the man who recruited John Evershed, discoverer of the famous Evershed effect and established Kodaikanal Observatory as a major centre for solar physics. However, within a few decades, due to the efforts of astronomers such as Norman Pogson and John Evershed, the standard of astronomical research in India attracted world-wide attention. We briefly sketch the evolution of this phase through a few examples of research topics pursued here and the change of the manner in which they were pursued. Gemma Louise Ives The University of Sheffield Department of Geography A history of the monsoon in southern India between 1730 and 1920 and its impact on society: with a particular focus on Tamil Nadu. PhD Thesis A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2020 Abstract The field of historical climatology has rapidly developed over the past two decades, driven by the understanding that improving the knowledge of the past can help make informed decisions about the future. Most studies currently focus on mid-latitude regions, whereas, this thesis is part of a growing body of work that seeks to expand the methodology into tropical and subtropical regions. Because of India’s colonial past, there is a substantial amount of extant, English language documentation available to researchers and these documents can help to build an understanding of both historical monsoon magnitude and changes in the social-ecological systems of the past. This thesis firstly explores the application of two types of documentary evidence for reconstructing the monsoon of Southern India, with a focus on the northeast monsoon of Tamil Nadu between 1730 and 1920. The first type is terrestrial documentation; this predominantly consists of government records, diaries, correspondence, historical accounts, newspapers and early instrumental records. The content of these documents was calibrated to modern instrumental rainfall, creating a five-point index of northeast monsoon magnitude, the first reconstruction of its length and resolution for the region, which had a strong correlation with modern instrumental data of 0.74, significant at the 0.05 threshold. -

VENUS IN INDIA1: ♀☉ THE TRANSIT TALES R C Kapoor [email protected], [email protected] Indian Institute of Astrophysics ABSTRACT This work is about sightings and astronomical observations of transits of Venus across the disk of the Sun made from the Indian region. The sources of the information presented here range from some classic texts and historiographies, publications and records of institutions and chronicles to accounts by some individuals. Of particular interest is the 1761 transit, observed from top of the Governor’s house, Fort St George, Madras by the Rev. William Hirst who made a significant observation – of having seen at the moments of ingress a nebulosity about the planet. That in fact is the discovery of atmosphere of Venus, duly recorded in his communication as presented in the Vol. 52 of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. The discovery of atmosphere of Venus has been attributed to Mikhail Lomonosov alone that he made during the same transit observed from the St. Petersburg Observatory. As seen from the Earth, transits of only Mercury and Venus are possible. These have held great importance in early telescopic astronomy when the transits enabled astronomers to determine, using triangulation, the solar parallax with an unprecedented accuracy and size up the Solar System. -

3 Colin Mackenzie, the Madras School of Orientalism, and Investigations at Mahabalipuram Jennifer Howes he largest extant archive of information pertaining to the ‘Madras TSchool of Orientalism’ that was gathered by a single individual is undeniably the Mackenzie Collection in the British Library’s Asia Pacific and Africa Collections.1 Colonel Colin Mackenzie (1754–1821) gathered this vast collection over the course of his four-decade career in India. Most of the material he gathered in the South while engaged in surveys following British military campaigns. Most famously, he was in charge of the Survey of Mysore (1799–1810) after the Fourth Mysore War. When Mackenzie died on 8 May 1821 his collections were so disorganized as to be virtually unusable. His widow sold them to the East India Company in 1822, and the task of cataloguing them fell to Horace Hayman Wilson. The resulting catalogue focused on the manuscripts and gave only cursory lists of other materials Mackenzie had collected. This is why, on page 581 of Wilson’s 1828 catalogue, he devoted just one page to listing the 2,630 drawings sent to London as part of the Collection. In the late 1960s Mildred Archer attempted to individually catalogue the Mackenzie drawings (Archer 1969, 472– 552), but by that time they were housed in a different part of the India Office Library from the Mackenzie Manuscripts. This arrangement has continued, and as a result few researchers have taken an integrated view of the manuscripts and drawings Mackenzie collected concomitantly. Unfortunately, despite the renewed interest in the Mackenzie Collection that began in the 1970s the information contained in the Mackenzie drawings has been largely disregarded. -
