  • 4. Non-Heptatonic Modes
Tagg: Everyday Tonality II — 4. Non‐heptatonic modes 151 4. Non‐heptatonic modes If modes containing seven different scale degrees are heptatonic, eight‐note modes are octatonic, six‐note modes hexatonic, those with five pentatonic, while four‐ and three‐note modes are tetratonic and tritonic. Now, even though the most popular pentatonic modes are sometimes called ‘gapped’ because they contain two scale steps larger than those of the ‘church’ modes of Chapter 3 —doh ré mi sol la and la doh ré mi sol, for example— they are no more incomplete FFBk04Modes2.fm. 2014-09-14,13:57 or empty than the octatonic start to example 70 can be considered cluttered or crowded.1 Ex. 70. Vigneault/Rochon (1973): Je chante pour (octatonic opening phrase) The point is that the most widespread convention for numbering scale degrees (in Europe, the Arab world, India, Java, China, etc.) is, as we’ve seen, heptatonic. So, when expressions like ‘thirdless hexatonic’ occur in this chapter it does not imply that the mode is in any sense deficient: it’s just a matter of using a quasi‐global con‐ vention to designate a particular trait of the mode. Tritonic and tetratonic Tritonic and tetratonic tunes are common in many parts of the world, not least in traditional music from Micronesia and Poly‐ nesia, as well as among the Māori, the Inuit, the Saami and Native Americans of the great plains.2 Tetratonic modes are also found in Christian psalm and response chanting (ex. 71), while the sound of children chanting tritonic taunts can still be heard in playgrounds in many parts of the world (ex.

This article argues that Southland Tales is an example of what feminist theologian Catherine Keller calls the “counter-apocalyptic” (Keller 1996:19-20). Through strategies of ironic parody Kelly both describes and questions the apocalyptic and its easy polarities. In situating the film as counter-apocalyptic the paper argues that the film both resists the apocalyptic impulse however it is also located within it. In this sense it produces a unique take on the genre of the post-apocalyptic film and a powerful fluid critique of the post 9/11 security state. • Tesi Di Fabio Marchi

  • Broward/Palm Beach Björk - New Times Broward-Palm Beach 3/16/12 2:44 PM
Broward/Palm Beach Björk - New Times Broward-Palm Beach 3/16/12 2:44 PM Björk Vespertine (Elektra) By Jessica Parker published: September 27, 2001 By all accounts Björk's albums should be commercial disasters. Her lyrics make little sense to the outside world, and she's known to invite listeners into the depths of her mind. (She also doesn't care one bit about the repercussions of dressing like a swan, but that's beside the point.) On the contrary her art sells, allowing her freedom to be even weirder and more experimental. Fortunately Björk offsets all her introspection and questionable fashion sense with great production, funky electronics, and killer melodies, a balancing act she continues on her latest album, Vespertine. Following up Selmasongs -- last year's accompaniment to Dancer in the Dark, the film in which Björk made her acting debut -- Vespertine is Björk's most gorgeous, tender album, a sensuous, warm peek into her diary with ornate, enchanting instrumentation. And like Selmasongs, Vespertine is cinematic in approach with its army of strings and dramatic choral section. Björk seems to work much like frequent collaborator Thom Yorke of Radiohead, making soundtracks for dreams and personal epiphanies, and the results are often intensely intimate, haunting emotional crescendos. "Heirloom" recounts a recurrent dream wherein she swallows "little glowing lights my mother and son baked for me," as the deep bass reinforces the surreal nature of the dream. In contrast the stock bossa nova drum programming renders the song almost poppy. And "It's Not Up to You" recalls the lighter side of her first solo effort, Debut, showing that Björk hasn't abandoned her own form.

  • Chapter 26 Scales a La Mode
CHAPTER 26 SCALES A LA MODE Musical innovation is full of danger to the State, for when modes of music change, the laws of the State always change with them. PLATO WHAT IS A MODE? A mode is a type of scale. Modes are used in music like salsa, jazz, country, rock, fusion, speed metal, and more. The reason the Chapter image is of musicians jamming is that modes are important to understanding (and using) jazz theory, and helpful if you’re trying to understand improvisation. Certain modes go with certain chords. For more information about modes and their specific uses in jazz, read James Levine’s excellent book, Jazz Theory. On the Web at http://is.gd/iqufof These are also called “church modes” because they were first used in the Catholic Church back in Medieval times (remember good old Guido d’ Arezzo?). The names of the modes were taken from the Greek modes, but other than the names, they have no relation to the Greek modes. The two modes that have been used the most, and the only two most people know, are now called the Major and natural minor scales. Their original names were the Ionian mode (Major), and the Aeolian mode (natural minor). The other modes are: dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, and locrian. Modes are easy to understand. We’ll map out each mode’s series of whole and half steps and use the key of C so there aren’t any sharps or flats to bother with. THE MODES IONIAN Ionian is used in nearly all Western music, from Acid Rock to Zydeco.

Assim me sinto ao traçar as últimas linhas dessa dissertação.

Junctions volume 2 issue 2 113 ! ! Björk’s Biophilia A Musical Introduction to Feminist New Materialism Marek Susdorf ABSTRACT This paper looks at Biophilia, created by Björk (2011), the Icelandic singer, musician and actress. This multidimensional project, comprising a music album, newly-designed instruments, an educational programme and digital interactive applications, is focused on its title theme, namely, the love of life, or correctly said, the love of zoe, which I will prove in the course of this article. Taking the project as my point of departure, I will present the basic structure of feminist new materialist ontology and methodology. In particular, I would like to investigate the problematic conceptual, as well as physical, relationship between the human (both andro- and anthropocentric) subject and his non-human other. I will try to locate my reflections within the feminist new materialist and posthumanist frameworks and analyse the way in which the anthropocentric and phallogocentric human has been trying to subordinate, symbolically and physically, the rest of the planet. My special focus here is the political foundations of the myth of human exceptionality, which has been utilised to subjugate, colonise and exploit what we tend to call ‘nature’. This research draws mostly upon the work of Donna Haraway, Karen Barad and Rosi Braidotti. Following Haraway’s plea to ‘make kin, not babies’ (Haraway, 2015), I will show how Björk has managed to create a plane whereon both human and non-human worlds may meet and participate in imagining new artistic, symbolic and physical assemblages. KEYWORDS Björk, Biophilia, Feminist New Materialism, Posthumanism, Art INTRODUCTION Drawing inspiration from Björk’s 2011 project Biophilia, I would like to present a brief introduction to feminist new materialism and its application in artistic practice.

  • Top 30 Films
March 2013 Top 30 Films By Eddie Ivermee Top 30 films as chosen by me, they may not be perfect or to everyone’s taste. Like all good art however they inspire debate. Why Do I Love Movies? Eddie Ivermee For that feeling you get when the lights get dim in the cinema Because of getting to see Heath Ledger on the big screen for the final time in The Dark Knight Because of Quentin Tarentino’s knack for rip roaring dialogue Because of the invention of the steadicam For saving me from the drudgery of nightly weekly TV sessions Because of Malik’s ability to make life seem more beautiful than it really is Because of Brando and Pacino together in The Godfather Because of the amazing combination of music and image, e.g. music in Jaws Because of the invention of other worlds, see Avatar, Star Wars, Alien etc. For making us laugh, cry, sad, happy, scared all in equal measure. For the ending of the Shawshank Redemption For allowing Jim Carey lose during the 1990’s For arranging a coffee date on screen of De Niro an Pacino For allowing Righteous Kill to go straight to DVD so I could turn it off For taking me back in time with classics like Psycho, Wizard of Oz ect For making dreams become reality see E.T, The Goonies, Spiderman, Superman For allowing Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy and Joesph Gordon Levitt ply their trade on screen for our amusement. Because of making people Die Hard as Rambo strikes with a Lethal Weapon because he is a Predator who is also Rocky.

Twenty billion?i At the end of the trailer for the television eco-documentary Draumalandi! (2007), an interviewee questions the monetary value placed on landscape. The question encapsulates ongoing controversies over ownership, valuation and use of the natural environment in the Nordic region and beyond. It presents an implicit opposition between, on the one hand, economic valuation of the natural environment, epitomised by natural capital accounting (measurement and incorporation into markets of natural resources and ecosystems), and on the other hand, the idea that nature is, and should remain, in the realm of the “beyond-human”.

  • Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: an Analysis Into Graphic Design's
Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
