The historical documents are few, and the surviving evidence of the past with regard to our smallest cathedral is scanty at the best. The chief books of reference have been Browne Willis's valuable "Survey of St. Asaph,'' published in 1720, also Edwards' edition of the same published at Wrexham in 1801, and the learned work by the Ven. Archdeacon Thomas, M.A., F.S.A., on " The Diocese of St. Asaph." " Storer's Cathedrals," pub- lished in i8ig, together with similar works, have also been consulted.

Nicholas Dixon November 2018 ii Thesis Summary The Activity and Influence of the Established Church in England, c. 1800-1837 Nicholas Andrew Dixon Pembroke College, Cambridge This thesis examines the various ways in which the Church of England engaged with English politics and society from c. 1800 to 1837. Assessments of the early nineteenth-century Church of England remain coloured by a critique originating in radical anti-clerical polemics of the period and reinforced by the writings of the Tractarians and Élie Halévy. It is often assumed that, in consequence of social and political change, the influence of a complacent and reactionary church was irreparably eroded by 1830.

  • The Cathedral Church of Exeter by Percy Addleshaw
Bell's Cathedrals: The Cathedral Church of Exeter by Percy Addleshaw EXETER CATHEDRAL. HISTORY OF THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY AND ST. PETER IN EXETER. The history of any ancient cathedral must always be interesting, and that of Exeter is no exception, though "it supplies less of architectural history than those churches whose whole character has been altered over and over again." A cathedral represents not only the spiritual, but the active, laborious, and artistic life of past generations. The bishop, too, was in many ways the head man of the province, and combined, not seldom, the varied qualities of priest, warrior, and statesman. The acts of such ecclesiastics were full of importance, not for their own city only, but often also for the whole nation. As men who had frequently travelled much and studied deeply, they summoned to their aid in the building and beautifying of their churches the most skilled artists end artificers of their time; so, with the story of the lives of the bishops of a diocese, the history of a cathedral's building is inextricably woven. To be elevated to a bishopric generally meant to be put into possession of great wealth—when Veysey became bishop the revenues of the see of Exeter have, by some authors, been computed at £100,000; Canon Hingeston-Randolph puts them, with more reason and authority, at the sum of £30,000—and a large portion of this money was spent on works connected with the chief church of the diocese. It is not wonderful, therefore, this generosity being joined to marvellous skill and taste, that our old cathedrals are at once the despair and envy of the modern architect.

  • British Protestant Missions and the Conversion of Europe, 1600–1900
British Protestant Missions and the Conversion of Europe, 1600–1900 This book is the first account of British Protestant conversion initiatives directed towards continental Europe between 1600 and 1900. Continental Europe was considered a missionary land – another periphery of the world, whose centre was imperial Britain. British missions to Europe were informed by religious experiments in America, Africa, and Asia, rendering these offensives against Europe a true form of “imaginary colonialism.” British Protestant missionaries often understood themselves to be at the forefront of a civilising project directed at Catholics (and sometimes even at other Protestants). Their mission was further reinforced by Britain becoming a land of compassionate refuge for European dissenters and exiles. This book engages with the myth of International Protestantism, questioning its early origins and its narrative of transnational belonging, while also interrogating Britain as an imagined Protestant land of hope and glory. In the history of Western Christianities, “converting Europe” had a role that has not been adequately investigated. This is the story of the attempted, and ultimately failed, effort to convert a continent. Simone Maghenzani is Dame Marilyn Strathern Lecturer in History, and Fellow and Director of Studies at Girton College, University of Cambridge. Stefano Villani is Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park. Routledge Studies in Early Modern Religious Dissents and Radicalism Series editors: Federico Barbierato, Hannah Marcus, Stefano Villani and Xenia von Tippelskirch Titles in this series address the discursive constructions of religious dissent and the practices of radical movements in the early modern world. The series transcends traditional national and confessional historiographies to examine early modern reli- gious culture as a dynamic system that was essential in forging complex identities and encouraging dialogue among them.

Russell Distributed Proofreading Team from images generously provided by the Million Books Project ENGLISH MEN OF LETTERS SYDNEY SMITH by GEORGE W. E. RUSSELL LONDON, NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIVE PREFACE In writing this Study of Sydney Smith, I have been working in a harvest-field where a succession of diligent gleaners had preceded me. page 1 / 329 As soon as Sydney Smith died, his widow began to accumulate material for her husband's biography. She did not live to see the work accomplished, but she enjoined in her will that some record of his life should be written. The duty was undertaken by his daughter, Saba Lady Holland, who in 1855 published _A Memoir of the Reverend Sydney Smith_. To this memoir was subjoined a volume of extracts from his letters, compiled by his friend and admirer Mrs. Austin. For nearly thirty years Lady Holland's Memoir and Mrs, Austin's Selection of Letters together constituted the sole Biography of Sydney Smith, and they still remain of prime authority; but they are lamentably inaccurate in dates. Lord Houghton's slight but vivid monograph was published in 1873. In 1884 Mr. Stuart Reid produced _A Sketch of the Life and Times of Sydney Smith_, in which he supplemented the earlier narrative with some traditions derived from friends then living, and "painted the figure of Sydney Smith against the background of his times." In 1898 the late Sir Leslie Stephen contributed an article on Sydney Smith to the _Dictionary of National Biography_; but added little to what was already known.

The funds to purchase and to build (and then to pay its first principal William Hart Coleridge and his assistant tutors) had been raised by a group of enthusiasts with shared intentions. First, to have a central training college for the Church of England, where young men (aged 18 plus) would be trained in oriental languages and culture as well as Christian faith and practice before they were sent out as missionaries to India, Asia, Africa, the Pacific, and the Americas. Secondly, to have a showcase for their own vision of the Anglican church: a branch of the Catholic church, bearing witness to a long history stretching back to those first missionaries who came from Rome with their leader S Augustine to Kent in 597 AD. They were making a statement about the continuity of the Anglican church. It was founded 1,250 years ago, it was reformed but not broken at the Protestant Reformation, and now they were proud to be standing again on the spot where Augustine and his monks had begun their missionary work in ancient England.

  • Derwent Coleridge (1800-83) and the Deacon Schoolmaster
Derwent Coleridge (1800-83) and the Deacon Schoolmaster David Sydney Nicholas Institute ofEducation University ofLondon Doctor ofPhilosophy 2007 Declaration I hereby declare that, except where explicit attribution is made, the work presented in this thesis is entirely my own. Word count (exclusive ofbibliography): 92,211 words. David Sydney Nicholas 10 August 2007 2 Abstract A persistent oral tradition links Derwent Coleridge, first principal of St Mark's College, Chelsea, to the training of deacon schoolmasters during the period 1841 to 1864. This innovative model ofelementary schoolteacher made a distinctive contribution to teacher training in England. Justified theologically rather pedagogically, the deacon schoolmaster model gave the college a unique character in the surge towards a comprehensive system ofChurch education. This thesis breaks fresh ground by using documentary evidence to test the oral tradition. The introduction of the model and subsequent training of deacon schoolmasters at St Mark's College have been delineated. Alternative models, and their place in Coleridge's experience and thought, are drawn from contemporary sources. The immediate and long-term effects of increasing control over teacher training by central government, and the impact of opinions within the Church, are assessed in relation to Derwent Coleridge's aims for the College. These influences are described in the context of public debate on deacon schoolmasters in three mid-nineteenth century settings: the Church, Parliament, and the British colonies. The international dimension to the deacon-schoolmaster model is one that previously has not been researched. Hitherto unused documentary sources have added important detail to imprecise elements in the oral tradition ofSt Mark's College, and re-examination oflittle-known material has refreshed and broadened the conventional interpretation and estimate of significance of deacon schoolmasters.
