Beholder has already earned a "Win and You're In" berth to defend her title in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I), but should she win not only her first start against males but also her first at 1 1/4 miles, might her connections send her to the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I)? Regardless, a victory here could add to the already expected fireworks when she goes through the auction ring this fall. And speaking of the Breeders' Cup, could the Pacific Classic's male contenders pose a threat to Bob Baffert's trainee American Pharoah down the road at Keeneland? What about 2014 Breeders' Cup Classic winner Bayern or Clark Handicap (gr. I) victor Hoppertunity from his very own barn? "To come back and forth twice and run as big as she did, it was an amazing run," trainer Wesley Ward told Racing Post. "(Jockey) Irad Ortiz said that the ground was a little soft today and that maybe was something she is not quite used to, but we got beat on the square." Acapulco's lack of seasoning was tested after Take Cover broke through the gate prior to start and was scratched, resulting in the field being unloaded and the race delayed. To put Acapulco's run into perspective, the juvenile Scat Daddy filly easily held second and finished at least two lengths clear of 17 older runners, including 10 group stakes winners. August year- Lling sale registered a 23% increase in the num- ber of yearlings offered, which caused the average and median to drop 14% and 25%, respectively. This year's sale, scheduled for Aug. 25-27, appears poised for a rebound as OBS has reverted the cat- alog back to the size of its successful 2013 auction. "We have over 800 horses in this sale, so I wouldn't describe it as a boutique sale," said Tod Wojciechowski, director of sales at OBS. "But this sale has improved, and that's through consignors who are bringing quality horses." OBS August follows Fasig-Tipton's strong July and Saratoga yearling sales on the calendar, and Wojciechowski anticipates the demand seen for top offerings at those sales to carry over to Ocala. "It's the evolution of the marketplace," he said. "The competition for good horses is strong, and buyers recognize that eliminating this sale from their calendar would cut themselves out from an opportunity at a lot of good horses."
