First Dude Answers Opportunity’s Knock With a Grade 2 Winner BY JOHN P. SPARKMAN COURTESY DAILY RACING FORM______It is far more difficult nowadays for a region- al stallion to make the leap to Kentucky than in the long-ago days of, say, Mr. Prospector. Sheer numbers work strongly against such a shift. In 2017, for example, 231 Kentucky stallions bred 17,368 mares, an average of 75.2 mares per stallion. That is 55.4 percent of all mares bred nationwide last year, and you may rest assured that the vast majority of stakes-winning mares - the most likely mares to produce more stakes winners - were covered in Kentucky. Occasionally a speedy sire of 2-year-olds like Kantharos makes the jump, but it has been almost 15 years since Malibu Moon successful- ly transitioned from regional star to national sensation and top-10 sire. First Dude, the sire of Saturday’s Grade 2 winner Shamrock Rose, is unlikely to make that transition, but he is a good example of what a regional horse can do when he has the opportunity to cover a well-bred mare. Ninth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar, Accelerate suffered his only loss this year when he finished second to City of Light in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) in April. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert won an unprecedented three consecutive runnings of the Classic (2014-2016) with Bayern, American Pharoah and Arrogate. LEXINGTON, KY. – Miguel Mena will make his long-awaited return to the saddle when riding Wildwood Dancer in the first race Thursday at Keeneland. Mena, who will turn 32 on Nov. 6, suffered fractures of his right ankle and heel in a March 15 race spill at Fair Grounds, where he had been leading rider at the time. He has undergone an arduous rehabilitation process and has been exercising horses at Churchill for several weeks. Mena intends to ride sparingly over the next couple of weeks before leaving early for Fair Grounds, which starts Nov. 15. “Gentleman Al” on scene The trainer known as “Gentleman Al” Cates ventured here last week ahead of sad- dling his first-ever starters at Keeneland, and he scarcely could have been more impressed. “It’s a great atmosphere here,” said Cates, who will run a pair of first-time-starting 2-year-olds, Souixper Charger (sixth race Thursday) and She’s a Truckin (fourth race Friday). “We’re all very excited, especially my crew.” Cates, 64, began training in 2005, shortly after retiring in Arkansas following a 30- year career as a technician and engineer for AT&T. A lifelong racing fan, he began build- ing a stable that now has won 173 races while rarely venturing outside of Louisiana and Arkansas. In the meantime, he earned his nickname for his gracious, positive, and artic- ulate demeanor. “Combined with the sales being held at Fasig-Tipton [Monday through Thursday], we’re hoping to make this a regular visit every October,” Cates said.
