  • The Uses of Jain Sati Name Lists
8 THINKING COLLECTIVELY ABOUT JAIN SATIS The uses of Jain sati name lists M. Whitney Kelting Jains venerate virtuous women (satis) who are virtuous and who, through their virtue, protect, promote, or merely uphold Jain values and the Jain religion. Jains narrate the lives of satis both individually and in the context of Jain Universal Histories (such as the Fvetambar Trisastifalakapurusacaritra of Hemacandra and the Digambar Adipuraja of Jinasena) and some of these satis are named in early Jain texts like the Fvetambar Kalpa Sutra. Fvetambar Jains also list satis (often sixteen of the following names: Brahmi, Sundari, Candanbala, Rajimati, Draupadi, Kaufalya, Mrgavati, Sulasa, Sita, Subhadra, Fiva, Kunti, Filavati, Damayanti, Puspacula, Prabhavati, and Padmavati) who stand in for the greater totality of satis. They also have more inclusive lists which extend the title sati to an unbounded number of women. Sati lists, through their fluidity and their inclusivity, serve as representatives of the totality of women’s virtue and as such are efficacious primarily by creating auspiciousness but also by reducing karma. While satis are revered in all Jain sects, this discussion is centered on the ways that Fvetambar Murtipujak Tapa Gacch Jains have constructed the idea of collectivities of satis.1 At present there are five gacchs (mendicant lineages) of Fvetambar Murtipujak Jain mendicants: Tapa, Añcal, Khartar, Paican, and Tristuti. Between 85 and 90 percent of the Fvetambar Murtipujak mendicants belong to the Tapa Gacch, which was formed in

  • Diwa Li and Jainism
October, 2016 Vol. No. 195 Ahimsa Times in World Over + 100000 The Only Jain E-Magazine Community Service for 14 Continuous Years Readership DIWA LI AND JAINISM Diwali has a very special significance in Jainism. It marks the anniversary of Nirvana of Mahavira's soul, the twenty fourth Jain Tirthankara of present cosmic age. It is celebrated at the same time as the Hindu festival of Diwali. Diwali marks the New Year for the Jain group and it likewise remembers the passing commemoration of their 24th Tirthankara Mahavira and his achievement of moksha. Mahavira attained Moksha on this day at Pavapuri on Oct. 15, 527 BCE, on Chaturdashi of Kartika, as confirmed by Tilyapannatti of Yativrashaba. Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of this era, revitalised Jain dharma. According to tradition, the chief disciple of Mahavira, Ganadhara Gautam Swami also attained complete knowledge (Kevala Jnana) on this day, thus making Diwali one of the most important Jain festivals. Mahavira attained his nirvana at the dawn of the amavasya (new moon). According to the Swetamber text Kalpasutra, many gods were present there, illuminating the darkness. The following night was pitch black without the light of the gods or the moon. To symbolically keep the light of their master's knowledge alive, 16 Gana-kings, 9 Malla and 9 Lichchhavi, of Kasi and Kosal, illuminated their doors. They said: "Since the light of knowledge is gone, we will make light of ordinary matter" (" Rc aW c, [ W cè Pःb ". Dipavali was mentioned in Jain books as the date of the nirvana of Mahavira.

  • International Journal of Jaina Studies (Online) Vol
International Journal of Jaina Studies (Online) Vol. 3, No. 2 (2007) 1-60 A NOTE ON THE PĀSA TRADITION IN THE UNIVERSAL HISTORY OF THE DIGAMBARAS AND ŚVETÂMBARAS Guṇabhadra, Mahāpurāṇa, Utt. 73 (Pārśva) Willem Bollée in memory of A. N. Upadhye The 9th century C.E. was one of vivid display of activity on the part of both Śve- tâmbara and Digambara authors of whom we possess works of, e.g., Śīlâṅka, Puṣpa- danta, Jinasena and his pupil Guṇabhadra. They all wrote a Universal History (mahā- purāṇa), a hagiography, that is, of the 24 Jinas, 12 Cakravartins (emperors) and 3 x 9 other heroes. The Digambara monks Jinasena and Guṇabhadra composed their Sanskrit kāvya in two parts: the former, called Ādipurāṇa, consists of 47 chapters (parvan), 42 of which were written by Jinasena and deal with the lives of the first Jina, Ṛṣabha, and of the first emperor (cakravartin), Bharata. The other 5 and the 30 chapters of the latter part, the Uttarapurāṇa, were authored by Guṇasena, who also wrote the Ātmânuśāsana. As the Epilogue (Praśasti) tells us, in the rule of the Rāṣṭrakūṭa King Kṛṣṇa II Akālavarṣa the final Triṣaṣṭilakṣaṇa-mahāpurāṇa was dedicated on June 23rd 897 C.E. by Guṇabhadra’s pupil Lokasena (Glasenapp 1926: 331). The chapter on the life of Pāsa, or Pārśva, as the 23rd “fordmaker” (Tīrthakara or Tīrthakṛt) is wrongly called in Sanskrit (see note 8 infra), is edited and translated below. Pārśva is very popular in both Jain denominations,1 to the extent that he not only had his place in the Universal Histories, but was also given separate hymnic * The author expresses his sincere gratitude to several colleagues for various suggestions, and Miss Andrea Polden for checking his English text.
