CHARLOTTE FRENKEL-TOMIC-Public Relations Office ACADEMIC HERALDRY The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students of those days wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th century castles and halls of learning. The gown for the bachelor's degree has a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. It is primarily distinguished by its long pointed sleeves. The holder of a master's degree wears a gown with the same yoke effect as the bachelor's. The gown, however, is worn open, and the very long sleeve is squared and closed at the end, the forearm coming through a slit near the elbow. The gown for the doctor's degree is also worn open, it has broad velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the large, bell-like sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the field oflearning to which the degree pertains. Generally, all caps may be of serge or broadcloth. In addition, doctor's caps may be of velvet and adorned by a gold tassel. The hood gives color and distinction to the academic costume. The hood - a black shell-like affair of varying size for the three degrees and material to match the gown - is silk-lined stressing the colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is then bordered with velvet of the color signjfying the respective fields of learning.

The colors indicative of the various fields of learning are as follows: Arts and Letters ...... White Library Science ...... Lemon Laws ...... Purple Education ...... Light Blue Philosophy ...... Blue Science ...... , . . ... Golden Yellow Fine Arts ...... Brown Business Administration ... Light Brown Pharmacy ...... Green

It is important to note that the field of learning having prior mention in the conferment of a degree, and not the department governing the major work, determines the color that is proper for the velvet of the hood. The doctor of philosophy degree requires the blue velvet irrespective of the major field. If more than one degree is held, the gown and hood of the highest degree are worn. Some of the institutional colors to be seen at an academic ceremony are as follows: Catholic University, lemon yellow with white chevron; Columbia, light blue with white chevron; Fordham, maroon; Harvard, crimson; Manhattan, white with emerald green chevron; New York University, violet; St.John's University, bright red with white chevron. .§t. OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

CITATION for THE PRESIDENT'S MEDAL JOHN K. BINGHAM

A Government major and Business minor in St. John's College, John K. Bingham has earned the admiration of his collegiate peers by virtue of maintaining a high record of scholarship while being engaged in time-consuming and responsible campus activities. Born in Rockville Centre 21 years ago, he is one of eight children born to Charles and Claire Bingham. His father is a practicing New York attorney and his mother is a Eucharistic Minister at their home parish of St. Agnes Cathedral. An older sister graduated from St. John's three years ago; and his twin brother, an older brother, and a younger sister are currently students at St.John's. In 1976 John graduated from South Side High School, Rockville Centre, where in his junior and senior years he was elected president of his class. He enrolled at St. John's on a competitive scholarship as well as a St.John's University Excellence Scholarship, and has consistently been included on the Dean's List throughout the past four years. Identified with Student Government since his freshman year, he was elected in both his junior and senior years as President. It was his prime responsibility to coordinate and stimulate activities of all students on both curricular and extracurricular levels. He has personally prized this three years of involvement as Chairman of Publicity for the St. John's University Dance Marathon for Muscular Dystrophy, whose most recent efforts for the cause generated $44,000, the largest sum, at the time, raised in New York State by any dance marathon. Nominated to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, our honoree is also a member of the Skull and Circle Honor Society of St. John's College .. Last year he was elected by his peers to prestigious membership in The President's Society. John Bingham has also been an active participant in the works of Campus Ministry and, as such, was chosen by the Christian Awakening Program of the Diocese of Brooklyn to be a team leader on Young Adult Retreats. Publicity Chairman of Beta Epsilon Rho, a business oriented fraternity, our honoree has also served for three years as student representative on the Liberal Arts Faculty Council and on its Academic Fairness Committee. Among numerous other Committees, our Medalist has been a member of the University Appeals Committee, Hearing and Deciding Committee and the Senate Committee on University Programs and Development. Surely it is remarkable to note that, in addition to his commendable scholarship and multiple activities, this cum laude graduate worked at night for all four years at the Greystone Pharmacy in his home town. With pride and admiration, St. John's University confers her symbol of high esteem, The President's Medal, upon John K. Bingham.
