In the Winter Dark Tail Credits Tail voice over: After Maurice has shot his wife Ida, he heads up the hill to his dying wife. He holds her in his arms and sobs as she dies. Jacob gets Ronnie out of the vehicle and pushes the flat bed Toyota upright. Maurice grabs a shovel and begins to dig a grave for his wife. Jacob carries Ronnie to the truck, and they drive off into the darkness, while Maurice begins the job of digging a hole, pausing to watch the Toyota disappear into the night. Then the image cuts to Maurice sitting on the verandah of his home in pre-dawn light, at first in close up. As his voice over unfolds, the camera pulls back to offer a wide shot of him on the verandah : Maurice (v/o): “Some nights I sit here and talk and stare, and stay out until the break of day …waiting, hoping. There’s been no blue lights, no detectives, no sign of Jacob or Ronnie or her musician boyfriend … and it’s been almost a year… (A kookaburra begins to sound over a wide shot of the dawn light falling on the pasture and the bush). … Sometimes I see a shadow … (ECU of his eyes) …between the trees. But I know to leave these things alone now …(back to a wide shot of him on the verandah, now with dawn light on it) …I make my confession, wait for redemption …or punishment …(a shot of the sun rising over a distant hill, bathing the screen in a yellow hazy glow) …but there’s only the sun rise … Music swells, fade to black, and end credits begin to roll ... • Australian Television, Music and Place
Screen Sound n1, 2010 SOUNDING EAST OF EVERYTHING Australian Television, Music and Place Liz Giuffre Abstract East of Everything is a contemporary Australian television drama series shot on the New South Wales North Coast in and around the popular tourist destination of Byron Bay. In addition to utilising the region’s visual beauty – a cinematographic technique commonly employed in Australian drama – East of Everything has harnessed the musical culture that has developed in the area over time. The series relies on its soundtrack to create a sense of place and illuminate the program’s dramatic progression. This article will explore the use of music to ‘place’ East of Everything, examining the incorporation of pre-existing and specially commissioned material. I will show that the sonic representation of place through music has been key to the program’s success, and that place in the Australian drama is revealed sonically to be as diverse, emotive and striking as the region’s visual landscape. Keywords Television, Soundtrack, Australian music, Byron Bay, Surfing Culture Introduction Billingham (2000) argues that television drama often relies on the creation of ‘geo- ideological’ relationships to attract audiences. As part of his evaluation of various contemporary British and American television drama series, he suggests that many successful programs created a “dialectic of literal notions of place and location, transposed with their ideological marking, signing and delineation” (2000: 1). For Billingham the depiction of place was central to the success of these television texts, with the program’s target audience engaged as visuals and sound worked in “symbiotic tandem” to create an “imagined city” (2000: 119).

GOALPOST’S THE ETERNITY MAN SELECTED FOR LOCARNO FILM FESTIVAL Rosemary Blight, of Goalpost Pictures Australia, is delighted to announce that The Eternity Man, the Julien Temple-directed film opera filmed in Sydney, has been selected to screen in the Piazza Grande at the Locarno Film Festival in Italy. The Eternity Man is the first Australian film to screen in the Piazza Grande since Moulin Rouge in 2001. The Piazza Grande is an enormous Renaissance square in the centre of the Swiss- Italian town which accommodates over 7,000 viewers, with film’s projected nightly onto one of the largest screens in the world. The Festival opens on August 6 with a screening in the Piazza Grande of Julian Jarrold's Brideshead Revisited. The Eternity Man will be in contention for the inaugural Variety Piazza Grande Award, awarded by critics from Variety, and the Prix du Public UBS award. • STC Waiting for Godot Invited to London
17 September 2014 STC’s Waiting for Godot invited to London Sydney Theatre Company's “thrilling, incredibly special production” (Sunday Telegraph) of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot featuring Luke Mullins, Philip Quast, Richard Roxburgh and Hugo Weaving, directed by STC Artistic Director Andrew Upton, will tour to London’s Barbican as part of the International Beckett Season in 2015. STC’s production, which had a paid attendance of nearly 35,000 people in Sydney at the end of 2013, will be performed at the Barbican Theatre from 4 to 13 June 2015. The engagement is STC’s second invitation to the Barbican following the success of Gross und Klein (Big and Small) in 2012. The Australian’s critic John McCallum said of STC’s show: “I've seen many productions of this great play, including one directed by Beckett himself, but this is the best”. Jo Litson for the Sunday Telegraph wrote “It really does seem to encompass the whole of life. Unforgettable.” Jason Blake in the Sydney Morning Herald declared that “everything conspires to make Vladimir and Estragon's existential plight feel touchingly real”, while Diana Simmonds for StageNoise.com pronounced it “a superb realisation”. The director and two of the actors will be particularly steeped in Beckett next year. Hugo Weaving is playing the lead role in STC’s Endgame, a later work by the master playwright, also directed by Andrew Upton, from 31 March to 9 May. Luke Mullins performs in a separate production of that play for Melbourne Theatre Company, also opening in March. Waiting near a tree, Estragon (Roxburgh) and Vladimir (Weaving) struggle to make sense of a peculiar predicament.
