E G 19/09/15 – 17/01/16 O THE FUTURE OF THE DIGITAL UPDATE IDENTITY LATURBO AVEDON “Selfie” was chosen as the English word of the year in 2013, and today 25 million Germans admit to occasionally taking selfies. A 2014 “Time” magazine survey found that Düsseldorf is the selfie capital of Germany, and the city placed 136 in an international comparison, well ahead of Berlin or Hamburg. The digital revolution has influenced and changed photography more than any previous development: “I think, therefore I am” has become “I photograph, I document, therefore I am”. The quest for identity has always been one of the major questions driving humanity, one that has presented itself in myriad social, political and cultural forms of expression. The question that naturally follows, “Who do I want to be, or who should I be?”, is part of the basic repertoire of culture, philosophy, economics, theology and politics, alongside the collective version this question: “Who are we?” – as a social group, as a nation, as Europeans. The exhibition project “Ego Update. The Future of Digital Identity” explores how these questions have changed and developed under the influence of digital media. How do digital and techno- logical advances around the world affect human identity, and what kind of society is likely to result? How are our notions of identity and our desires shaped by digital communication, or even created by it? LUIS BARRAGÁN AND THE INVENTION OF MEXICAN REGIONALISM Giulia Mela Università IUAV di Venezia / IUAV University of Venice, Venice Italy. Abstract The work of Luis Barragán (1902-1988) embodies Mexican identity, and the architect is considered one of the most important figures of the Critical Regionalism movement in Latin America. Nevertheless, a comprehensive analysis of his own private library–kept at the Barragan Foundation, Switzerland and Fundación de Arquitectura Tapatía Luis Barragán, Mexico–tells a different story. In fact, the contemporary critical reception of his work has a far more complex genesis, which might be summarised as follows: 1. Barragán, nemo propheta in patria. For many years, Barragán’s work was better known abroad than in his own country. The national recognition came in 1976, with the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes, after an exhibition at the MoMA in New York. At that time, Barragán was a 74-year old architect that had realized some of his most famous projects, such as the Casa Barragán, Tlalpan Chapel, Cuadra San Cristóbal, and Casa Gilardi. 2. Barragán, forger of an independent path. The urban project for Jardines del Pedregal was the turning point of Barragán’s career, and from the mid-1940s the architect distanced himself from the research path of his colleagues. His detachment from the academic, political, and theoretical infrastructure allowed him to develop an autonomous language. 3. Barragán, a “visual” architect. Barragan defined his work as “autobiographical” and inspired by the colonial villages of his childhood. This is partially true; alongside Mexican architecture, the architect was deeply fond of the timeless aura of vernacular architecture in general. -

BNA Kubus for Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos of UNStudio The 2016 BNA Kubus has been awarded to the founders of UNStudio, Ben van Berkel (architect) and Caroline Bos (art historian / urban planner). The aim of the architecture prize, this year bestowed for the 41st time by the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects (abbreviated as BNA), is to express the institute’s appreciation for an exceptional contribution to architecture. The Kubus was awarded on the recommendation of a jury made up of Nathalie de Vries (chair), Steven Nobel, Ton Idsinga, Wienke Bodewes, Willem Hein Schenk and Willem Jan Neutelings. The presentation ceremony will take place on 3 November in Amsterdam. Extract from the jury report The jury concluded that Van Berkel and Bos, together with their UNStudio team, are more than deserved winners of the 2016 BNA Kubus. 'No one controls the creative and technical process better than UNStudio. They prove that in-depth research pays off, as does network-driven collaboration with professionals in the fields of architecture, infrastructure and urban development. The cutting-edge nature and absolute craftsmanship of their body of work makes it both exemplary and innovative.' High quality, iconic buildings and international appeal The jury’s decision was based on three criteria: excellent craftsmanship, a recognisable and innovative body of work, and a relevant contribution to the profession. From the time UNStudio was established in 1988, Van Berkel and Bos have been building up an impressive body of work, according to the jury. Their work is always of high quality, the buildings are iconic and have international appeal.
