H. Zhang & H. H. Li Abstract This paper deals with eight species of the genus Gibberifera Obraztsov from China. One new species, G. cla- vata Zhang & Li, sp. n., is described. The female of G. monticola Kuznetsov is described for the first time in scien- ce. A key to the Chinese species is given. Nat. Croat., Vol. 29, No. 2, 227-240, 2020, Zagreb. In 2016 and 2017 a survey of the butterflies and moth fauna of the island of Lokrum, Dubrovnik was carried out. A total of 208 species were recorded, which, together with 15 species from the literature, raised the total number of known species to 223. The results of our survey can be used as a baseline for the study of future changes in the Lepidoptera composition on the island. In comparison with the lit- erature records, eight butterfly species can be regarded as extinct from the island. The most probable reason for extinction is the degradation of the grassland habitats due to the natural succession as well as the introduction of the European Rabbit and Indian Peafowl. Their presence has probably had a tremendously detrimental effect on the native flora and fauna of the island. To conserve the Lepidop- tera fauna of the island, and the still remaining biodiversity, immediate eradication of these introduced species is needed. The performance of the trap was tested in a capture-mark-recapture experiment on 4 the Warren root collar weevil, Hylobius warreni Wood (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). A high 5 percentage (77%) of the marked H. warreni were recaptured at least once and a high 6 percentage of the weevils were recaptured several times, with one weevil recaptured eight 7 times. -

CLEARWING MOTHS Integrated Pest Management for Home Gardeners and Landscape Professionals The larvae of several species of clear- wing moths in the insect family Sesiidae are important wood-boring pests in landscapes. Hosts include (actual size) alder, ash, birch, fir, oak, pine, poplar, sycamore, willow, and stone fruit trees such as apricot, cherry, peach, and plum. Larvae that closely re- (actual semble those of clearwing moths in- adult egg size) clude the American plum borer (Euzophera semifuneralis, family (actual Pyralidae), a serious boring pest of size) hosts that include fruit and nut trees, pupa mountain ash, olive, and sycamore. This is certainly preferred for ease of data input. The new version of Levana now has an excellent import facility, that can convert pages of records in a few seconds. MS Excel, MS Works, or tables in MS Word or tab-text are all acceptable file types. It not only makes my life much easier, it is a joy to use! Please remember to include your name in the file name of your records. On days where several different recorders send a file called ‘butterfly records 11’, it’s chaos! It also helps if you include a header with your name on so that your printed records can be easily attributed to you. Woefully few people have taken this on board. Thanks to those that have, it takes so little to bring joy and relief to this poor recorder. Any recorders with computers but not currently sending their records electronically, please consider doing so. Even if you don’t have email, records can be sent on disc. The Palaearctic genus Acompsia is revised and two subgenera are considered: Acompsia Hübner, 1825 and Telephila Meyrick, 1923. Altogether 17 species are dealt with in detail and genitalia and adults are figured. 7 new species are described: Acompsia (A.) pyrenaella sp. n. (Spain: Pyrenees), A. (A.) ponomarenkoae sp. n. (Albania, Greece), A. (A.) schepleri sp. n. (Turkey), A. (A.) fibigeri sp. n. (Turkey), A. (A.) bidzilyai sp. n. (Russia: Transbaikalia), A. (A.) caucasella sp. n. (Russia: Caucasus) and A. (T.) syriella sp. n. (Syria). Lectotypes for A. maculosella (Stainton, 1851), A. dimorpha Petry, 1904 and A. minorella (Rebel, 1899) and a neotype for A thpunctella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) are designated. When speaking about entomolo- gy, he will laugh and say the interest began “in the womb.” Driven by his passion for science and technology, he strives for eco- nomic security, which can be largely attributed to his upbringing in communist Poland. How do you become economically stable according to Darek? By building a company that is customer focused: embracing honesty, respect, trust and support, the rest are details. When discussing what characteristics Alpha Scents, Inc. reflects, it’s clear that the vision for the company is shaped by a desire to be loyal to all stakeholders, including customers, vendors, and his employees. Since childhood, Darek was involved with biology clubs and interest groups, fueling his passion for the sciences and leading him to study forestry and entomology during his undergraduate and master’s studies. In 1985 he started studying and experimenting with insect traps, in particular bark beetle traps baited with ethanol lures. This is how Darek started honing his speciali- zation and began asking the intriguing question of, “How could we use scents to manage insects?” In 1989, right before the fall of Communism, Darek emi- grated to Canada and in 1993 started his PhD program in the field of Insect Chemical Ecology in Syracuse, New York. After his graduation in 1998, one of his professors recommended Darek to a company in Portland, Oregon. -

Heritage lecture / Allocution du patrimoine Staffan Lindgren Trips, traps, triumphs and tribulations: A journey from childhood dreams to a dream-career in entomology Modified from the Heritage Lecture presented at the Joint Annual Meeting of the Entomological Societies of Canada and British Columbia, Vancouver, 2 November 2010 hen first asked to deliver the 2010 Heritage Lecture (Fig. 1), WI immediately started thinking about what the word “heritage” actually means. I turned to the authoritative Wikipe- dia for the answer, and found the following (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heritage): “Heritage” refers to something inherited from one’s ancestors. It has several differ- ent senses, including: Natural heritage, a group’s inheritance of fauna and flora, geology, landscape and landforms, and other natural resources Dezene Huber Cultural heritage, the legacy of physi- cal artifacts and intangible attributes of a Fig. 1. Staffan presenting the Heritage Lecture. group or society: man-made heritage In entomology, our heritage combines these two, but it is really cultural heritage that makes humans what they are, in that we can pass accumulated knowledge down from generation to generation. Knowledge isn’t acquired by osmosis, however. All of us have had people in our lives who have guided and inspired us, our mentors. Returning to the web, I found the following: Mentor - A wise and trusted counselor or teacher Mentorship - “… informal transmission of knowledge… relevant to work, career, or profes- sional development Mentoring entails informal communication… during a sustained period of time, between … the mentor and …the protégé.” (Modified from Bozeman and Feeney 2007) This paper is not meant to focus on me, but rather to recognize the importance of heritage and mentorship. -
