Administrative Information Acquisition Purchases, 1992 (R12762), 1994 (R13316), 2000 (R14699) Processed by Lisa Jones, 2001 Repository: Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin Crowley, John, 1942- Manuscript Collection MS-1003 Biographical Sketch John Crowley, son of Dr. Joseph and Patience Crowley, was born December 1, 1942, in Presque Isle, Maine. He spent his youth in Vermont and Kentucky, attending Indiana University where in 1964 he earned a BA in English with a minor in film and photography. He has since pursued a career as a novelist and documentary writer, the latter in conjunction with his wife, Laurie Block. In 1993, he began teaching courses in Utopian fiction and fiction writing at Yale University. Although Crowley's fiction is frequently categorized as science fiction and fantasy, Gerald Jonas more accurately places him among "writers who feel the need to reinterpret archetypical materials in light of modern experience." Crowley considers only his first three novels to be science fiction. The Deep (1975) and Beasts (1976) take place in futuristic settings, depicting science gone wrong and the individual search for identity and purpose. Engine Summer (1978) amplifies these themes with history, odd lore and arcane knowledge, and extends his work beyond the genre "into the hilly country on the borderline of literature" (Charles Nichol). -

Science Fiction Module Convenors: Dr Caroline Edwards & Dr Joe Brooker Module Level: BA Level 6 (optional module) Time: Wednesdays 6-7.20pm, 2014-15 Module description This module introduces students to some of the key concepts and methodological approaches used in the contemporary study of science fiction (SF). SF is understood inclusively, as a capacious genre overlapping at times with fantasy, utopian/dystopian literature, Gothic, satire, speculative fiction, and the alternate mappings of literary history offered by modernism or postmodernism. Focusing on its development throughout the twentieth and into the twenty-first century, we will consider the ways in which SF has evolved: in particular in the novel and the short story, but also at times invoking other forms such as drama and film. We will be drawing on a range of critical approaches through which to explore some of the defining interests of SF literature and to reflect upon its critical reception in secondary literature. Module aims and objectives • To develop understanding of debates about genre. What is ‘genre fiction’? What distinctions or hierarchies are established between ‘literary’ and ‘genre’ texts? How have our understandings of SF as a genre changed over the last century? • To become familiar with recurring tropes such as robots, space exploration, genetic engineering, dystopian futures and (post-) apocalyptic worlds. • To explore ways that Science Fiction has acted as a social commentary on contemporary society. • To gain an understanding of how Science Fiction has explored ideas including parallel worlds, alternate histories and different models of time and reality. • To gain knowledge of diverse critical approaches to SF, including those from Marxism, structuralism, gender studies, postcolonial theory, cultural history, adaptation studies, ecocriticism and utopianism / dystopianism. -

It develops a framework for tracing the relationships between real world science and technology and innovation and science fiction/speculative fiction involving processes of transformation, central to which are questions of influence, persuasion, and desire. This is contrasted with the more commonplace assumption of direct linear transmission, SF providing the inventive seed for innovation– instances of which are the exception rather than the rule. The model of influence is developed through an investigation of the nature and evolution of genre, the various effects/appeals of different forms of expression, and the ways in which SF may be appropriated by its various audiences. This is undertaken (i) via an inter- disciplinary survey of work on SF, and a consideration the historical construction of genre and its on-going importance, (ii) through the development of a prototype database exploring transformational paths, and via more elaborated loops extracted from the database, and (iii) via experiments with the development of a web crawl tool, to understand at a different scale, using tools of digital humanities, how fictional ideas travel. -

READING BY STARLIGHT Science fiction’s impact on popular culture has been striking. Yet sf’s imaginative texts often baffle or dismay readers trained to enjoy only the literary or ‘canonical’. Reading by Starlight explores those characteristics in the writing, marketing and reception of science fiction which distinguish it as a mode. Damien Broderick analyses the postmodern self-referentiality of science fiction narrative, its intricate coded language and discursive ‘encyclopaedia’. He shows how, for rich understanding, sf readers must learn the codes and vernacular of these imaginary worlds, while absorbing the ‘lived-in futures’ generated by the overlapping intertexts of many sf writers. He was born on August 18, 1925 in Dereham, Norfolk, England. In 1943, he was drafted by the Army and was sent to the Britannia Barrack, Norwich; after his training, he joined the Royal Corps of Signals at Catterick Camp, Yorkshire. JOHN CROWLEY/BACKGROUND Long a Gene Wolfe fan, I was turned on to Crowley by two other Gene Wolfe fans, Michael Andre-Druissi and Alice K. Turner, both literary critics who would eventually compile a book on Crowley. Crowley completed his first novel (I’ve forgotten what it was called then) in the late ‘60s, but put it aside to publish two others: The Deep (1975), arguably a Shakespearean history set on a circular chessboard floating in space (Terry Pratchett may have pinched this idea for his Discworld series), complete with aliens and androids, and Beasts (1976), in which certain 1960s political movements are re-cast in a futuristic New York, where the characters are either a) animal-like, b) part animal or c) animals. Although very different, both works feature highly stylized prose. Part of the fun of these novels is trying to figure out why Crowley tells his stories the way that he does. Crowley then revised his first novel and published it as Engine Summer (1979). Although it touches on many of the same themes (e.g. storytelling), Engine Summer is unlike Crowley’s other two science fiction novels in that it actually packs some pathos. Engine Summer was Crowley’s last science-fiction novel. His next project was the sprawling, even more highly stylized, World-Fantasy-Award-winning fairy tale, Little, Big (1981). Little, Big draws heavily on a symbolic language that was developed in the earlier science fiction novels. It is an amazingly multi-textured work, but the pacing is frequently awkward. It doesn’t grab the reader like Engine Summer.
