The intention of this newsletter is to gather all tennis related news and events that have occurred at the Hillsboro Club or at other tennis sites this winter season. We hope you enjoy this newsletter, and if you have tennis related news, please email your news to Stefan Laporte at [email protected]. We love to hear about it. SPECIAL EVENTS It’s not too late to come down to the Club and escape the winter cold to see a great Mixed Doubles Tennis Exhibition during the Laporte Cup. This year’s special guest is Mikael Pernfors, a former top 10 ATP world ranked player. In 1986, Mikael lost to Ivan Lendl in the French Open finals after defeat- ing Boris Becker. Also playing in the exhibition will be Stefan’s assistants, Phil Matthews, Gedi Norkute, and another upcoming female professional. The match will take place Friday, February 20th from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. followed by cocktails in the Sea Room at 6:00 p.m. and a short lecture by Mikael at 6:30 pm. This is held during the Club’s Annual meeting weekend with the Laporte Cup Men’s & Ladies’ Doubles on Saturday (2/21) from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. followed by Mixed Doubles on Sunday (2/22) from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Past guest professionals include Fred Stolle, Dick Stockton, Gene Mayer and Emilio Sanchez. • Memorable and Action-Packed Week As a Volunteer at Stockholm Open
Memorable and action-packed week as a volunteer at Stockholm Open In July 2016, while preparing for the Rogers Cup tennis tournament in Toronto, I received an email from our newest member of the Guest Services Committee, Anders Wahlfridsson, a SALK member. This was the first time our committee would have a visiting volunteer during the tournament and I felt quite honoured (and curious) that someone from Sweden would travel all the way to Canada to volunteer at our tennis tournament. The more I heard of his story, the more fascinated I became. The idea of volunteering at another tournament was brilliant. I had visited many other tournaments in the past, but had never thought of volunteering. In 2018, the Stockholm Open would be celebrating its 50th anniversary and there would be no better opportunity to be apart of such a special tournament. Now, it was my turn! Booked my flight, accommodation and now just had to wait until October for everything to happen. Oh right, I should learn some Swedish before going...I signed up with Duolingo and off I went. Mycket bra! A month before the tournament, I was introduced to Henrik Stenmo and Anton Johnson to finalize scheduling details. The first request from Henrik was to have me help out with a Pro-Am at the Salkhallen. It would include a “couple of Swedish legends like Pim-Pim Johansson, Mats Wilander, Robin Soderling, Magnus Gustafsson and Joakim Nystrom. ”OMG, this is going to be AWESOME! I didn’t leave much time to get adjusted to the new time zone.
