潮州鑼鼓迎瑞氣弦詩細樂賀元宵塵紓 Wong Kin-ting

為慶祝雞年和元宵，第四台之友特別邀請潮樂大師劉福光及其好友，一同來到香港電台送上不同類型的潮州音樂。音樂會後敬備茶點招待，同賀元宵。

To celebrate the upcoming Year of the Rooster and the Lantern Festival (which falls on the 15th day of the Chinese New Year), we welcome the renowned Chiu Chow musician, Lau Fok-kwong, and his friends to perform different varieties of Chiu Chow music.

There will be a reception after the concert. Audience members are all invited.

不知是誰的惡作劇，早在我孩童時代，就常常聽到「潮州音樂 — 自己顧自己」這句歇後語。當時暗忖，潮樂與「自己顧自己」有何關係？幾經思量，覺得或許是潮樂裏的二弦在拉奏時所發出的樂聲，有兩三分像以極濃潮州口音講出粵語「自己顧自己」這五個字。

不過，這句歇後語絕對沒有精確描述潮樂的真貌。在音樂的國度裏，潮樂是廣東三寶之一，與粵樂和客家漢樂各領風騷。潮樂源遠流長，蘊含唐宋遺風，而且樂種很多，除了用於宗教活動的佛道音樂，見於民謠和歌冊的曲藝音樂，以及舞台所用的潮劇音樂之外，還有三大門類，即弦詩樂、鑼鼓樂和細樂。其中以弦詩樂最有特色。

長幼有序，主從有別弦詩樂的「弦」字，是指二弦，而二弦是潮樂特有的拉弦樂器，也是弦詩樂裏居於領導地位的樂器。每當演奏弦樂，例必由二弦領奏，其他如琵琶、古箏、揚琴、椰胡、笛簫，都得跟從，情況好比二弦是一族之長，所有族人，當必景從。由此可見，弦詩樂很能體現長幼有序，主從有別的傳統。潮樂界慣有弦詩樂十大套曲之稱，而今次由潮樂大師劉福光領導的「潮樂賀元宵」音樂會中擬奏的〈寒鴉戲水〉，就是「十大套」之一。此曲是典型的六十八板結構，其中的「起承轉合」，活脫是文章的格局。以二弦為首的各式樂器，透過跌宕明暗的處理，描述寒鴉悠閑戲水的景象。

眼前無譜，心中有譜弦詩樂的「詩」字，是指詩歌的「詩」，不是絲竹的「絲」。原來，根據傳統，學潮樂的人，初登門檻之時，必須先行背譜，而背誦樂譜的做法，好比背誦詩詞。譜式背誦熟透，才可動樂。總之，要練到「眼前無譜，心中有譜」，才算正道。潮樂最大魅力，是讓觀眾不單聽到樂韻，更可看到演奏者的默契。得睹一眾樂手心意相連，渾然天成，才是最高享受。 JANUARY 2017 | FINE MUSIC | SPECIAL FEATURES 特稿 11

不失雅致的潮樂鑼鼓樂另一方面，潮樂的鑼鼓樂，有大鑼鼓樂與小鑼鼓樂之分。顧名思義，大鑼鼓樂所用的鑼、鼓、鈸都較大，樂隊編制也較大。小鑼鼓樂所用的鼓則較小，而鑼、鈸則不用，樂隊編制也較小。此外，按照常規，大鑼鼓樂由嗩吶領奏；小鑼鼓樂由笛子領奏。必須明白，潮州鑼鼓樂，不論是大鑼鼓樂或小鑼鼓樂，總體上是圖個熱鬧，絕不會弄至鼓樂喧天，震耳欲聾而有失雅致。

至於細樂，本來是專指三弦、琵琶和古箏的組合。不過，隨著年代轉變，各式小型弦樂組合（甚至加入笛簫），都汎稱為細樂。 ▲ Chiu Chow music ensemble 潮州音樂演奏團

此外，今次音樂會也有潮劇選段的演唱，如選自《八仙賀壽》的〈京城會〉。潮樂音樂會很多時都會加入潮劇演員，由樂隊伴奏，藉增藝趣。今次音樂會同場既可欣賞器樂，又可淺嘗潮劇，不亦快哉？

As one of the three major streams of Guangdong music, Chiu Chow music is renowned for its great variety in form and tunefulness, as well as its delicacy and reserved expression. Led by a player with a two-string instrument, erxian, and followed by other players in the ensemble, Xianshi is one of the main forms in Chiu Chow music, giving prominence to this unique bowed instrument. On another front, vivacity and elegance are fully exemplified in Chiu Chow drum and gong music.

‘What are some must-go places and must-buy souvenirs in Hong Kong?’ my foreign friends who recently visited Hong Kong asked me these questions, which I believe might take some time for Hong Kong people to answer too. ‘Maybe having some street snacks and going to the Peak to enjoy a nice view of the Victoria Harbour?’, I suggested, but it seems to me that something is lacking. As the city with the longest working hour, sometimes we miss great things around us and forget what we should be proud of indeed. Apart from delicacies and beautiful scenary, Hong Kong does have some intangible cultural assets, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) is absolutely one of them. With HKCO stepping into its ▲ HKCO performing at Hangzhou Grand Theatre Opera House 40th season, we have a chance to go through their incredible 香港中樂團在杭州大劇院歌劇院演出 musical journey.

From Hong Kong to international HKCO Being the only large-scale professional Chinese orchestra in Hong Kong, we could always find their place in Hong Kong music history. In 1983, when the Urban Council was celebrating its 100th anniversary, HKCO shared the stage with the other two art groups under Urban Council at that time, namely Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and Hong Kong Dance Company. HKCO also appeared in numerous performances at importance events in the city, including the opening of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in 1989 and the Hong Kong Reunification Spectacular in 1997, just to name a few. After the outbreak of SARS in 2003, Hong Kong was covered by a layer of gloomy mists. HKCO organised the Pictures courtesy of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra Hong Kong Drum Festival to pull Hong Kong out its doldrums, and it became an annual cultural event. While establishing their roots in Hong Kong, HKCO also tours around the world, serving as a cultural ambassador. In September 1982, they went for the first time to Australia. From then on, they left their footprints in many cities in Asia, Europe, and the USA. Footsteps of giants 名家足跡

At the Hong Kong City Hall 10th Anniversary Concert in 1972, pipa master Lui Pui-yuen conducted a 15-man band, which later received sponsorship from the Urban Council and eventually became HKCO in 1977. Starting from there, HKCO has been led by maestros including Ng Tai-kong, Kuan Nai-chung, Henry Shek, and currently Yan Huichang. Xia Feiyun, Chen Ning-chi, and Solomon Bard also served as their conductor at various points. In addition to their esteemed conductors, HKCO has always collaborated with distinguished soloists. The first ever guest soloist to collaborate with HKCO was pianist Choi Sown-le, in The Youth Piano Concerto by Liu Shihkun and various composers. Erhu master Min Huifen was also on the long list of artists that have joined forces with HKCO.

Commission scheme 委約制度

Commissioned works and world premieres have always been a backbone in the repertoire of HKCO. In the beginning, when HKCO was making its transition from an amateur band to a professional orchestra, it mainly performed a limited number of traditional pieces, which was why they were looking to commission new works. HKCO organises a number of activities, such as the yearly ‘Music from the Heart’ concert, where they call for new works from young composers and so discover new talents. ‘Music About China’ is also a hallmark programme in which composers from all around the world present their new works.

Crossover Collaboration 跨界合作 HKCO From reading different publications of HKCO, it is not difficult to discover that they take pleasure in experiments that may not follow tradition. Take the 40th season brochure as an example, we can see concerts with big names such as Xia Feiyun and Peng Xiuwen obviously, but we can also discover concerts with jazz master Ted Lo and Canto-pop singer Eman Lam. In fact, these crossover programmes are not a new thing. Back in 1979, HKCO had already invited the famous Hong Kong writer Eunice Lam to be a narrator. HKCO also first performed in a pop concert in 1986, where they played several pieces of Joseph Koo and had Liza Wang as a special guest. They have already performed with loads of local talent including the actress Connie Chan, singer Chet Lam, and the Yat Po Singers a capella group.

Passing the torch 文化傳承

HKCO has been promoting Chinese music as its mission and cultivating the new generation of music makers. As early as their second year of establishment, they did their first school and outreach concerts. On 28 April 1978, HKCO visited St. Louis School to perform, and also had Music Director Ng Tai-kong introduce their Orchestra. On 12 July the same year, they participated in a community activity in Yau Tsim Mong District. Over the years, HKCO has visited many different schools. In addition, in 2003, HKCO formed the Hong Kong Children Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Junior Chinese Orchestra. It also holds conducting masterclasses and competitions regularly for talents from different age groups.

HaochenIn Conversation withZhang

Chinese pianist Haochen Zhang is the youngest and first Chinese pianist to win the Van Cliburn Competition. His solo performances have been heard in the most prestigious concert halls around the world. He will perform at the Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival for the first time in 2017 and he speaks to Jonathan Douglas about his path to becoming a seasoned performer and how he came to play the piano as a young child.

From Prizewinner to Professional Soloist

So I don’t think I was particularly under any soloist, and that is the goal of the Competition. First Public Recital at Shanghai Concert Hall

J : I know that you started playing in public in Shanghai when you were quite young. How did you get onto the musical road in the first place? Were your parents musical?

H : No, they weren’t although I might call them semi-classical music fans. My mother was an engineer and my father was a Japanese translator so they had absolutely nothing to do with music. They were the ones who introduced piano to me because we always played classical music as background music at home from the period when I was born but it was always symphonies, it was never piano music. I hardly heard any piano music, I don’t think, ever! The first time I saw a piano was when my parents bought me one as a gift, and the reason is because my mother thought I was a pretty autistic kid when I was little, I always tried to think for myself, run around. Nobody knew what I was thinking so I was a pretty reclusive kid. But then my mother was learning English back then, and one day she found an article in the Reader’s Digest, a US magazine which she was reading as weekly homework and one of the articles caught her attention. It was something about how the piano is one of the best ways to raise baby intelligence, and it talked about all the technical factors, how finger playing can benefit your brain so my mother felt we always have classical music in the background, so why not let the kid learn an actual instrument like piano, which could make him smarter or boost his confidence. Music is a communicative form, so they felt it could make him open up hopefully. So that’s how everything started.

J : And then they bought you a piano?

H : Yes, and I learned for the first two weeks on my own, with Haochen Zhang appears at the 8th Hong Kong some help from my mother who bought me some very International Chamber Music Festival performing basic teaching materials. Sunday Opera welcomes in the New Year with a famous recording of the third episode of the monumental Ring cycle, intended to prepare our listeners for the live concert performances occurring at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre later this month. The rest of January will be occupied by a fateful tragedy from the pen of a great Italian master, a melodious French lyric masterpiece, and a passionate tale of young love doomed to die in the arid wilderness of the new world.

1 and 8 January: Wagner’s Siegfried The third music drama from the great tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883) will be presented on two consecutive Sundays. Our way of splitting Siegfried into two parts roughly corresponds to Wagner’s own interruption of the compositional process of his Ring cycle in 1856. After completing the first two acts of Siegfried, the composer broke off his work on the cycle for 12 years, during which time he turned his attention to creating his supreme tragedy of love, Tristan und Isolde (1865), and his unique comedy, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1868).

By the time Wagner returned to the Ring project and completed Siegfried in 1869, his musical style and compositional technique had developed to such an advanced stage that he was able to approach his concept of the ideal music drama with great confidence and competence. It was from the third act of Siegfried onwards that Wagner began to come close to realising his theory in which words, music and stage action, participating in equal measure, blend into one cohesive work. This opera describes the growth of the fearless and innocent young hero ▲ Wolfgang Windgassen, ▲ Hans Hotter, ▲ Gerhard Stolze, tenor tenor bass-baritone Siegfried to full stature of early manhood. It traces his first adventure through a Rhine journey guided by a mellifluous woodbird. The episode ends with Siegfried breaking through the circle of fire surrounding Brünnhilde. He awakens her and claims her as his bride. Singing the title role is famous heldentenor Wolfgang Windgassen. Wotan, the leader of the gods disguised as the Wanderer, is sung by bass-baritone Hans Hotter. The dwarf Mime is portrayed by tenor Allen Warren

15 January: Verdi’s La Forza del Destino Written on commission from the Imperial Theatre of St. Petersburg, La Forza del Destino (The Force of Destiny), the twenty-third of a total of 29 operas by Giuseppe Verdi (1813 - 1901), was given its premiere in November 1862. The composer revised the work and presented it at La Scala Theatre in Milan in February 1869. This was an important event as it marked Verdi’s reconciliation with a theatre in which he had not set foot in more than twenty years. His main complaint had been on the quality of productions, and he returned only when the management guaranteed him absolute control over his works, thus launching the final phase of his long and illustrious creative life. The opera is set in Spain and Italy in the mid-1700s. During a failed attempt to elope with Leonora, Don Alvaro accidentally kills her father. Both lovers flee but become separated. She takes refuge in a monastery and lives as a hermit in a mountain cave. Her brother Carlo tries to track down the lovers in order to revenge his father’s death. Destiny brings them together and leads the story to its tragic end.

In the role of Leonora is the legendary Yugoslavian soprano Zinka Milanov. Don Alvaro is sung by the famous Sicilian tenor Giuseppe di Stefano, and Carlo by American baritone Leonard Warren. The Orchestra and Chorus of the Academy Santa Cecilia of Rome are conducted by Fernando Previtali.

22 January: Delibes’ Lakmé Leos Delibes (1836 - 1891) is remembered for his three successful works for the theatre: the ballets Coppelia and Sylvia, and his masterpiece for the Opéra-Comique of Paris, Lakmé, which received its premiere in 1883. A graduate of the Paris Conservatoire, Delibes held positions as rehearsal accompanist at the Théâtre Lyrique, chorus master at the Paris Opera, and organist at the church of Saint Pierre de Chaillot. He was a successful composer of ballet and wrote operettas almost yearly as well as occasional incidental music for the theatre. Lakmé, with its brilliant coloratura Bell Song and ever-popular Flower Duet, is his most enduring work. Never in robust health, Delibes died little more than a month before his 55th birthday.

Dame Joan Sutherland, soprano, sings the magnificent title role of a Hindu priestess in the early days of British colonial rule in India. Her love for an English officer, sanctified by courage and self-sacrifice, is violently opposed by her father, a Brahmin priest. Tragedy results from the irreconcilable clash between two cultures, to which Lakmé offers herself as victim. Other principal artists include tenor Alain Vanzo as the English officer Gerald and baritone Gabriel Bacquier as the priest Nilakantha. Richard Bonynge conducts the Monte Carlo National Opera Orchestra .

29 January: Puccini’s Manon Lescaut This is the third opera by Giacomo Puccini (1858 - 1924) and his first international success was given its premiere in 1893 at the Teatro Regio in Turin. The subject was taken from a popular novel by Abbé Prévost that had also inspired Jules Massenet’s Manon, produced in Paris only a few years earlier with resounding success. Defending his decision to risk such a close comparison, Puccini pointed out that ‘Massenet treated the subject as a Frenchman, with grace and refinement. I shall treat it as an Italian, with desperate passion.’ Soprano Miriam Gauci sings the role of Manon Lescaut, who is torn between her love for the young Chevalier des Grieux, portrayed by tenor Kaludi Kaludov, and the luxury ▲ Miriam Gauci, soprano ▲ Alexander Rahbari, conductor provided by her protector Geronte, sung by bass Marcel Rosca. The story ends with Manon’s deportation as a prostitute to America, where she dies in the arms of her lover des Grieux, in the desert of Louisiana. 甘草廣播員的隨筆廖碧楨逢星期日晚上6時正

最近結交了幾位新朋友，談到年青人在選科或找工作時，需要時間摸索自己真正的興趣。我分享了自己的經歷 ― 在二十多年前辭去銀行工作後，某天在報章見到第四台的招聘廣告，就本着「試試玩玩罷」的心態去投考，就這樣與古典音樂廣播結下不解之緣。那一天傾談的時候，比我高半個頭的兒子站在身我旁！(中年女人嘛……年齡當然是秘密)為了不暴露年齡，我只得胡說自己是天才學生，很早已唸完書畢業，而且很年輕就生了個兒子來！事實上，綜觀現時第四台的人力資源，我已是一位甘草廣播員了！

說到音樂品味，特別是演繹方面，可能有聽眾會覺得我很「甘草」― 我是受過高度嚴格的培訓噢！小時候，我的四哥很喜歡聽古典音樂，特別崇拜指揮家卡拉揚。他擁有的唱片十居其九都是由卡拉揚指揮的。那時我還以為世上只有這一位指揮家。後來認識了我已故的丈夫，他也是一位古典音樂迷。所崇拜的都是大名鼎鼎的音樂家，如指揮家福特溫格勒 (Wilhelm Furtwängler) 和基伯斯貝殊 (Hans Knappertsbusch)，歌唱家舒娃茲柯芙 (Elisabeth Schwarzkopf) 和費沙－狄斯高 (Dietrich Fischer- Dieskau) 等。

加入第四台後，在九十年代末期和二千年代初，我主持了一系列節目，其中三位樂評 ―劉志剛、已故的老前輩高考亮和鄭延益的教導令我獲益良多。例如在「鐳射唱片室」節目裏，劉志剛經常帶來不同版本作比較。鄭老師和高先生就分別跟我主持「演繹縱橫談」和其他節目環節。高考亮介紹的是指揮大師，如舒墾 (Hermann Scherchen)、卡拉適 (Paul Kletzki)、莫拿雲斯基 (Evgeny Mravinsky) 等。鄭延益是位小提琴老行尊，令我真正領略各名家如凱費茲 (Jascha Heifetz)、克賴斯勒 (Fritz Kreisler)、夏薛特 (Josef Hassid) 等的演奏特色。

如此高質素的培訓大大提升了我的音樂品味，還令我變得「耳尖」呢！前陣子，我重聽莫扎特歌劇《費加洛的婚禮》的錄音，由布恩 (Karl Böhm) 指揮柏林德國歌劇院樂團，聯同各大歌唱家如派爾 (Herman Prey) 和麥菲斯 (Edith Mathis) 演出的版本，單是序曲裏弦樂演奏的乾淨脷落，已令人拍案叫絕！我心裏不由得讚嘆那是個經典版本。但與此同時，我又問自己：「在這四十多年來，就只得這個經典錄音嗎？難道沒有後起之秀？這條音樂路就只有光輝的過去，而沒有燦爛的未來嗎？」為了探討這問題，我邀請了劉志剛在1月份的「人約黃昏後」主持「歷久常新」環節，聽聽舊的經典灌錄，也認識一下近代出色的版本。一直以來，我覺得劉志剛欣賞音樂是很包容開放的，比較版本時不注重好壞之分，而是不同之處。他說自己永遠是本着學習的精神去聽音樂。初談環節的大綱時，他笑說：「是不是新不如舊呢？非也。」我也拭目以待！

貝多芬小提琴協奏曲

柏高絲金娜於享負盛名的西貝流士國際小提琴大賽勇奪冠軍。她的演奏獲蘇格蘭《先驅報》力讚，譽為是「聽過眾多貝多芬小提琴協奏曲的演出中，最精緻的演繹……美得令人屏息靜聽。」柏高絲金娜是次首度來港，參與演出香港小交響樂團的音樂會，與指揮柏鵬同台送上這首經典之作。樂團亦會演奏魏本深具田園質樸感的〈夏日和風〉，以及布拉姆斯筆下四首交響曲中最為簡練的第三交響曲。

3/2 Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival 2017 — Epitaphs (Fri 五) Epitaphs is not only the name of this concert but also the title of a string quintet by Brett Dean, the Festival’s 8:00pm first Composer-in-Residence. The piece is a reminiscence of five of his late friends, and features the composer himself on the viola. Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 and Franck’s Piano Quintet, both chamber music favourites, brim with emotional intensity in the hands of cellists Liwei Qin and Nicholas Canellakis, violist Brian Chen, pianist 8/2 Cecile Licad, and other top-notch international artists. 瑞士羅曼第樂團 / 亞當斯馬勒第二交響曲的手稿於倫敦一場拍賣會，以450多萬英鎊成交(約港幣4400萬元)，亞當斯：短程飛車創下樂譜最高成交金額。馬勒的真跡原封不動地展現在長達232頁的手稿上，其中震教徒的環包含作曲家以藍色蠟筆標示的變動、刪減和注釋。就馬勒交響曲的手稿而言，拍天方夜譚賣行形容這份手稿完整得前無古人，亦應後無來者。最接近是次成交金額的手稿 2016年9月2日日內瓦維多利亞音樂廳錄音。要數至1987年，莫扎特合共九首交響曲以約港幣2400萬元成交。

手稿原是屬於美國經濟學家、商人和指揮家卡伯蘭。1965年，卡伯蘭於卡內基音 John Adams 亞當斯樂廳欣賞過馬勒第二交響曲後從此著迷，更立志要指揮此樂曲。他憶述當時就像宙斯對他投擲了一道電光，令他步出音樂廳後判若兩人。他於1981年開始學習指揮，最終夢想成真，指揮超過一百場馬勒第二交響曲的演出，亦分別在1987年和 2002年與倫敦交響樂團，以及維也納愛樂灌錄這首樂曲。卡伯蘭於2016年年初離世後，手稿才得以重現。

RTHK Quartet celebrates its 8th anniversary this year. In the past few months, three of its members, Le Hoai-nam, Elvis Chan, and Laurent Perrin, have teamed up with the ensemble’s guest second violinist John Ma for two special concerts. RTHK Quartet was one of the performing artists in ‘Musicarama 2016’. They gave the premiere of local composer Tang Man-ngai’s Voice II, and played a number of recent Hong Kong string quartets, conducted by Angus Lee. On the programme, there was also a work by Stravinsky. You may visit RTHK Radio’4 website (rthk.hk/radio4) to listen to the concert recorded on 14 November at Hong Kong City Hall Theatre.

Another concert given by the Quartet in November was a community free performance that took place in Exchange Square, the heart of Hong Kong’s commercial zone. The Quartet makes it one of their missions to share their passion of music-making with people. They will make their annual visit to Lingnan University in late March with a new performance idea. The Quartet will create a unique sound by performing with the Hong Kong Bach Choir and you must be there to experience this new sonic adventure. See you there in Tuen Mun.

與眾同樂 ― 是香港電台弦樂四重奏一項重要使命。四重奏的成員將於3月底重訪嶺南大學，為校園的文化活動演出。至於今年的新活動，四重奏將與香港巴赫合唱團同台，為觀眾帶來新聲響、新概念。請留意第四台的最新消息，預留時間出席這個在屯門的約會。
