The discovery of this new entity allowed us to propose another species of Geodina, until now a monospecific genus, and produce the first 28S rDNA genetic data, which supports this species is related to genus Wynnea in the Sarcoscyphaceae. Key-words – 1 new species – Ascomycota – Sarcoscyphaceae – Sub-tropical zone Caribbeans – Taxonomy Introduction A study started more than 10 years ago in the area of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) by one of the authors allowed us to identify several interesting fungal species, both Basidiomycota and Ascomycota. Angelini & Medardi (2012) published a first report of ascomycetes in which 12 lignicolous species including discomycetes and pyrenomycetes were described and illustrated in detail, also delineating the physical and botanical characteristics of the research area. -

As a result ofthis research on the taxonomy, chorology and ecology ofthese fungi, 46 taxa have been identified, and within them the following six species represent new records to Costa Rica: Aurophora dochmia, Glaziella allrantiaca, Gyromitra esculenta, Morchella esculenta, Plectania rhytidia and Winnea gigantea. Pfister is an unique species of Pezizales due to the lacunose external surface of the apothecia. It is found on rotten wood and its occurrence is reported from Paraguay, Southern Brazil and Argentina. Specimens of R. edulis from the State of São Paulo are the first collections of the species in Southeastern Brazil. The aim of this study is to present a description and field photographs of the species and to update its distribution in SouthAmerica. A Taxonomic and Phylogenetic Investigation of Conifer Endophytes of Eastern Canada by Joey B. Tanney A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Biology Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2016 Abstract Research interest in endophytic fungi has increased substantially, yet is the current research paradigm capable of addressing fundamental taxonomic questions? More than half of the ca. 30,000 endophyte sequences accessioned into GenBank are unidentified to the family rank and this disparity grows every year. The problems with identifying endophytes are a lack of taxonomically informative morphological characters in vitro and a paucity of relevant DNA reference sequences. A study involving ca. 2,600 Picea endophyte cultures from the Acadian Forest Region in Eastern Canada sought to address these taxonomic issues with a combined approach involving molecular methods, classical taxonomy, and field work. It was hypothesized that foliar endophytes have complex life histories involving saprotrophic reproductive stages associated with the host foliage, alternative host substrates, or alternate hosts. Based on inferences from phylogenetic data, new field collections or herbarium specimens were sought to connect unidentifiable endophytes with identifiable material. Approximately 40 endophytes were connected with identifiable material, which resulted in the description of four novel genera and 21 novel species and substantial progress in endophyte taxonomy. Endophytes were connected with saprotrophs and exhibited reproductive stages on non-foliar tissues or different hosts. These results provide support for the foraging ascomycete hypothesis, postulating that for some fungi endophytism is a secondary life history strategy that facilitates persistence and dispersal in the absence of a primary host. -

Helsinki. ISSN 0453-3402. The new form genus Alciphila Harmaja (Hyphomycetes) is described. It is character ized by (i) a superficial mycelium composed of voluminous hyaline hyphae, (ii) conid ium development terminally in unspecialized hypha! ends, and (iii) large elongated brown aleurioconidia which possess a thick, complex wall with longitudinal ridges and a hyaline perisporium. The type and only species of the new genus is Alciphila vul garis Harmaja which is described as a new species at the same time. Judged from qualitative studies in the field and the herbarium, A. vulgaris occurs in a special ecolog ical niche: on forest litter and mosses which have been impregnated by the urine of European elk (Alces alces L.), accompanied by some species of the Pezizales (Asco mycetes). The species is reported from several localities in Finland and one in Norway. The interesting ecological niche concerned, a spot which has received elk urine, is discussed briefly. CENTRAL AMERICAN PEZIZALES. III. THE GENUS PHILLIPSIA1 W illia m C. D e n iso n Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon 97331 SUMMARY Five species of Phillipsia Berk, are reported from Central America: P. domingensis, P. crispata, P. lutea, P. hartmannii, and P. costaricensis. Two of these, P. lutea and P. costaricensis, are new species. Five extra-limital (Caribbean) species are included in a key to species ex pected to be found on the mainland. The limits of the genus Phillipsia and its relationship to other genera in the family Sarcoscyphaceae are discussed with special emphasis upon material from the American tropics. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study is based upon 28 collections of Phillipsia made by the author and his students in Central America in 1962 and 1964, sup plemented by herbarium specimens. Descriptions of whole apothecia incorporate field observations of fresh specimens and are supported by color photographs. For microscopic examination of asci, spores, and paraphyses, a fragment of dried apothecium was rehydrated in water, crushed, and mounted in a saturated solution of aniline blue in lactic acid. Paraffin sections were used for study of excipular tissues. Dried apothecia were wetted with 95% ethanol, vacuum infiltrated with 10 15% ammonium hydroxide, washed in water, hardened in formol-acetal- alcohol fixative, dehydrated and embedded through a tertiary butanol series, sectioned at 15 fi, and stained with safranin and fast green (Johansen, 1940). Spore sculpturing was drawn and photographed with the aid of a Leitz lOOx planapochromatic objective.
