Tadrarate, La Grand Rouge
AAC Publications Tadrarate, La Grand Rouge Morocco, Taghia Gorge In search of new projects, Alexander Huber and I were drawn to the deep and impressive Taghia Gorge, especially to the Tadrarate, a 500m wall of beautiful red limestone. We first visited the Taghia in October 2016. As always, Alexander was psyched, because the cliff was steep and difficult, and this was a country he had never visited. The charm of the mountains, the intense red colors of the landscape, the green columns of the poplars, the hospitality of the Berbers, and the decelerated life without the slightest sound of a motor—these alone are worth a trip. The southeast face of the Tadrarate holds an unfinished project of Arnaud Petit and friends. Farther to the left is a mostly bolted Polish route, Widmo, first climbed in 2004 and then redpointed with a hard direct finish in 2015 (Opozda-Samitowski, 8a). A quick check of the wall showed us that it would be very hard to open a direct new route ground-up in our chosen style. We prefer to follow the line of least resistance, using all the weaknesses a wall offers to us, with a minimum of bolts. So we decided to start up Arnaud’s project and then strike out on our own. The first ascent of our route, La Grande Rouge, took four climbing days. Once we left Arnaud’s line, partway through his sixth pitch, protection became scarce and long free climbing passages became obligatory. Especially in the heart of the route, there was hardly a possibility to use trad gear— our only chance was to run it out, always in the hope of finding a placement for the skyhook in order to drill another bolt. -

Pakistan 1997
LINDSAY GRIFFIN & DAVID HAMILTON Pakistan 1997 Thanks are due to Pakistan Ministry ofTourism, XavierEguskitza andkem Mustafa Awanfor their help in providing information. 1997 will be remembered as the year of the best weather conditions seen in the Karakoram for several decades. Low rainfall during the winter and spring meant that there were few problems with fresh snow at the start of the season. Long spells of settled conditions during June, July and August permitted a remarkably high number of climbing successes on both the high peaks and lower rock walls. Pakistan government figures show that 70% of this year's expeditions were successful compared with an average of 42% for the previous five years. _ There were several notable climbing achievements recorded. A Korean party made the third ascent of Gasherbrum IV by a new route on the impressive West Face. A huge Japanese expedition split its resources between Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum IT and successfully placed team members on each summit. The fine weather also suited those climbing big rock walls. A German team made the second ascent of Latok IT by the unclimbed SW Face, while several groups succeeded on other hard technical rock routes. However the main news of the season was the increasing popularity of 'normal routes' on 8000m peaks and the relative decline of exploratory mountaineering on lesser-known objectives. In celebration of the nation's 50th anniversary the Pakistan authorities relaxed the normal restrictions on the number of permits issued for the 8000m peaks. Ministry of Tourism statistics show that 57 expeditions from 16 countries received permission to climb peaks over 6000m. -

February 2006 BOLFA Special points of inter- est: Further cutting-edge routes (Part II) • Cutting edge routes 1990-2000 1990-2000 So by the end of 1990, the world had its first route graded 8c+ (34), courtesy of a 25 • Joke of the month foot offering in the UK. It was big news, for it was an unprecedented grade – and a route that would stand the test of time and see only 4 repeats in the next 14 years. Nev- • Gallery ertheless, it wasn’t long before another climb came to challenge it in the difficulty • The Last Word stakes – and this time it was Germany’s turn. 1991 Aktion Direkt (originally UIAA XI) (or 34/35 for us Aussies) was the product of Wolf- gang Gullich in 1991. The line had been a project of local Milan Sykora – though his vision was of a slightly different path up the same radically overhanging bulge. Gullich set to work on the project but chose instead to take a direct finish straight through the business. To do this, he specifically trained 1-finger pockets, but more importantly started a campus boarding regime that up until then, was unheard of. To train for the route, Gullich (amongst other exercises) trained plyometrics – specifi- cally on one-finger first joint edges. This involved dropping down and catching his weight using one-finger of each hand – then springing back up to the next rung. Clearly this type of training helped him, because he went on to climb the route over a period of 8 days (spread over a significantly longer period). -

Climbs and Expeditions 2004
156 CLIMBS AND EXPEDITIONS 2004 Accounts from the various climbs and expeditions of the world are listed geographically from north to south and from west to east within the noted countries. We begin our coverage with the Contiguous United States and move to Alaska in order for the climbs in Alaska’s Wrangell–St. Elias Mountains to segue into the St. Elias climbs in Canada. We encourage all climbers to submit accounts of notable activity, especially long new routes (generally defined as U.S. commitment Grade IV—full-day climbs—or longer). Please submit reports as early as possible (see Submissions Guidelines at www.AmericanAlpineClub.org). For conversions of meters to feet, multiply by 3.28; for feet to meters, multiply by 0.30. Unless otherwise noted, all reports are from the 2003 calendar year. NORTH AMERICA CONTIGUOUS UNITED STATES Washington Washington, trends and new routes. The summer of 2003 unfolded as the driest in a century, with rainfall 70-85% below normal. Seattle temperatures topped 70 degrees for a record 61 consecutive days. The unusual number of hot, dry days resulted in closed campgrounds, limited wilderness access, and fire bans. Pesky fires like the Farewell Creek in the Pasayten Wilderness, which was spotted June 29, obscured views throughout the Cascades, burned until autumn rains, and exhausted federal funds. Alpine glaciers and snow routes took on new character, as new climbing options appeared in the receding wake. A project by Lowell Skoog documented change by retracing, 50 years to the date, the photography of Tom Miller and the Mountaineers’ crossing of the Ptarmigan Traverse (www.alpenglow.org/climbing/ptarmigan-1953/index.html). -
