Kolkata is located in in southern Asia. Kolkata is a . The city has been steadily growing due to famine and civil wars in the countryside. Many poor farmers move to the city in search of jobs. Often they move to illegal settlements known as bustees. The local councils have not given any amenities to these areas. This has lead to two major problems.

Kolkata The first problem in Kolkata is the lack of clean water. Many bustees have very little taps and little to no houses have running water. This means many people have to queue for hours to get water. This leads to people washing, cleaning and even drinking out of the dirty rivers and streams. This leads to people getting water born diseases such as dysentery and . In India 186 million of the 1.2 billion have no access to clean water.

The Second problem I would like to discuss is the high rates of pollution Kolkata creates. The majority of sewage facilities in Kolkata are underdeveloped for the megacity. The huge bustees have not been fitted with sewage treatment sites and are often emptied into the river. This creates a huge problem. This sewage pollution added to the litter has created an impassable river and destroying wildlife.

In conclusion two problems faced by the city of Kolkata are: the lack of clean water and pollution of the land and its rivers.
