CAVENDISH BAR The history of the Nine out of every ten bananas sold in the shops of England at that time were Cavendish bananas, clearly demonstrating how the infl uence of man has been important for the banana. It all started in 1826 in southern China, when Charles Telfair, a resident of Mauritius and plant lover, became interested in some species of banana that he had spied quietly during his many travels. Three years later, he sent two of these plants to a friend in England. On the death of the latter, these plants were sold to the Duke of Devonshire. In 1836, from Chatsworth, growers spread the Cavendish variety far and wide, propagating their plants from the original two. The missionary John Williams took the rejects from Chatsworth and took them to the islands of Samoa, Tonga and Fiji. We even think that this variety came to Hawaii via Tahiti in 1855, and at the same time to and Papua New .

The name “Cavendish” refers to a type of banana imported to Mauritius by Charles Telfair. It is in this bar before or after dinner that those in the know relax in comfortable armchairs enjoying a cocktail, liqueur or the best cigars whilst listening to live music. For whiskey connoisseurs, a menu of 100 “single malts” exceeds the most demanding expectations. This bar also offers a fi ne selection of teas and cigars, a library and a billard.. As for the décor, the “English smoking room” atmosphere of colonial times is enhanced by beautiful coffered ceilings decorated with the arms of personalities who stayed at Bel Ombre. The Concept of ‘Timomo & Friends’ A funny bird! Timomo & Friends is a unique concept based on the character of Timomo, a ‘green cateau’, whose scientific name is ‘Echo Parakeet’, an endemic Mauritian species which almost became extinct a few years ago.

With green feathers and a yellow beak, Timomo, a real Mauritian mascot, looks like a parakeet. The name ‘Timomo’ refers to the Mauritian words: ‘Ti’ is the local word for ‘small’ and ‘momo’ is a nickname that comes from the word ‘Mauritius’.

Timomo is a bird that goes in search of treasure at the other side of the rainbow. This treasure hunt takes him around the island and allows him to meet friends:

Everyone helps in the quest and so, with these friends, Timomo discovers that he possesses one of the finest treasures in the world, “a rainbow heart”, in which tolerance, love, friendship, solidarity, respect and kindness prevail and sparkle!

The Mauritian identity, the rainbow nation and its warm hospitality are conveyed through this concept which inspired our exclusive brand. By sharing the cultural heritage of Timomo’s friends, children learn that difference creates harmony and that everyone adds something precious to the Timomo & friends kids club.

SEVEN COLOuRS SPA

A concept, a brand

Seven Colours brand was conceived on the island of Mauritius - an ideal wellness destination, renowned all over the world for its multicultural way of life.

Seven Colours is a wellness brand - a unique concept and philosophy that includes spas, specially developed cosmetic products, cuisine for the senses and a holistic lifestyle to provide a total well-being experience of body, mind and energy. Seven Colours celebrates the art of well-being, turning it into a whole concept: a synthesis of ancestral therapies, stimulation of the senses, and the benefi ts of nature. When we feel at peace in the lush green surroundings of a forest, or when we feel warm and happy in a decor full of sunny yellow tones, we are experiencing something that is more than merely a visual sensation. Charged with energy, the colours are absorbed by our bodies, by our skin, and they infl uence our being at a deep level... our emotions and our state of mind. They stimulate our nervous system, feeding our 7 energy centres: the chakras. Inspired by this oriental philosophy of the Chakras, the Seven Colours concept embraces the interaction and balance of the energies and colours that revitalise us.

Seven Colours recognises and respects that we are all unique individuals and in line with this, we offer each client a personalised experience, across the range of our treatments, products and even extending to energy cuisine. A unique approach... embodied in the motto dreamed up to encapsulate Seven Colours: younique

djoining the two hotels is the magnificent 18-hole golf course of the Heritage Golf Course , which stretches out over 100 hectares. This course is the work of architect Peter Matkovich, of Peter Matkovich & Hayes, a South African architectural firm of international renown.

ALocated between the sea and the mountains in a naturally hilly landscape featuring lakes, streams and tropical trees and this championship course (PAR 72), both technically challenging and varied, provides our golfer guests exhilarating golfing moments and an exceptional game.

It presents a real challenge to everyone who plays there, challenging themselves – whatever their level of competence – to improve their technique, their know-how and their skill. The architects of the course have integrated the two water courses that cross the golf course in the most beautiful way, creating small lakes which enhance the demands made on the technique of the players and yet fully respect the harmony and tranquility of the location. They have also integrated the magnificent Château de Bel Ombre and its gardens into the design at the heart of the golf course.

This course is certainly one of the most beautiful on the island with an amazing view over the lagoon to the south on one side and towards the hills of the Black River Gorges nature reserve on the other, giving players unique panoramic views at each hole.

It consists of 2 courses of 9 holes each. The 9 hole outer course is 3,210m long while the inner course is 3,297m long: the 3 par 3 vary from 140m to 200m, the 4 par 4s from 320m to 430m, the 4 par 5s from 490m to 520m. In addition, a 9 hole par 3 course, ideal both for beginners as well as for more advanced golfers wanting to perfect their game is sited at the heart of the 18 hole course.

The many facilities offered by the ‘Heritage Golf Club’ golf course include a putting green, chipping green and driving range. Guests can of course combine their game with physical exercise and take a wonderful walk along the course or else opt for a golf cart. Carts and caddies are available to golfers.

In addition, two qualified professionals are responsible for running the golf course and offer courses for beginners supported by the use of video. Finally, a restaurant and a bar run by courteous staff are there to receive players for a well deserved rest after a game of golf.

An environmentally responsible golf course

Created in 2004 in the foothills of Bel Ombre, the Heritage Golf Club was built on a hilly site, crisscrossed by streams, rivers in an area previously planted with sugar cane. So no deforestation, no creation of artificial ponds ... The golf course gains tremendously from its natural topography. Irrigation comes only from the collection of rainwater and runoff. This golf course has also been managed in an environmentally responsible way for some years now: 100% organic fertilizer is used for 50% fertilizer needed. The pesticide used has an outstanding environmental profile with minimal toxicity to wildlife and to users. Finally, weed control is done with coarse untreated salt. The Golf academy

The Heritage Golf Club has a golf academy with a certified PGA professional. This practice centre is ideal for all golfers who may benefit from additional learning through the use of video support and computer analysis (optional). A double practice range on grass is available and an exceptional approach area to the unique layout. Ideal for learning or training.

Heritage Resorts offers its guests access to the Frédérica Nature Reserve nestled in Domaine de Bel Ombre which - besides the exceptional character of its landscapes, is home to unique and protected fauna and fl ora. Covering an area of 1 300 hectares Frédérica rises to 550m above the sea, where a mixture of dry forest and coastal rainforest is to be found. The unique views, combining hilly landscapes, rolling plains and waterfalls including the highest waterfall of the island called ‘ l’Exemple’, 350 meters high, deer breeding and Lan astonishing biodiversity of fl ora and fauna have enabled the development of tourism activities in harmony with nature. One fi nds all sorts of species there, some introduced by man, medicinal, fruit trees, shrubs, and invasive species as well as indigenous Mauritian species such as black ebony, “bois pomme”, rosin producing conifers, “bois tambour”, Candle wood...

As for wildlife, Frédérica is home to a large colony of bats (approximately 10000), which are the only mammals indigenous to the island as well as 3000 deer, wild boars, monkeys, mongooses, “Paille-en-queue” birds and a few “Cateaux Verts” which are Mauritian Parakeets and are an endangered species saved by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation collaborating with the local governmental authorities, there being only 450 left on Mauritius. (Source: The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation)

The Frédérica concept : » To offer tours combining recreation with information about the fl ora, fauna and history, all accompanied by trained guides. » To strengthen social responsibility in order to conserve this natural heritage (only 2% of the indigenous forest still exists on the island) » To protect and preserve the fl ora and fauna with the help of recognized organizations such as the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation (MWF) For lovers of active tourism ... In addition to guided tours exploring Frédérica’s resources, quad bike or 4x4 excursions , day and night safaris, VTT, kids discovery tours, are organised as well as trekking! The reserve has a private lodge nestled in the hills of the reserve that serves as a stopover for excursions, rather than as a place for big events.

The Bel Ombre forest The forest at Bel Ombre is one of 2% of original forests left on Mauritius. It is considered very valuable as 50% of its vegetation is endemic (unique to Mauritius) or indigenous (specifi c to the Mascarene Islands). It is a forest that illustrates the transition from dry coastal forests to the wetlands of the highlands, it consists of a variety of species - the most common being: black ebony, olive wood, wood mat (Labourdonnaisia glauca, Sapotaceae), rosin, iron wood, nail wood (Eugenia fasciculata ,Myrtaceae) , drum wood, banana trees ...

The destruction of the unique habitat of a species leads to the disappearance of this species. Depending on its role in the ecosystem, the disappearance often leads to a rupture in the food chain and so can cause the extinction of a signifi cant number of species. Bel Ombre forest is therefore particularly important for conservation of these Mauritian species. The Bel Ombre Sugar Company and the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation signed an agreement in 2009 for the conservation and reforestation of the Bel Ombre forest.

Jumellea Recurva The Bel Ombre forest has the privilege of being one of the few places in Mauritius, to have all the components necessary for the natural habitat of the Jumellea Recurve, a white fl owered orchid previously considered to be extinct by the red list of the International union for the Conservation of Nature. On 24 February 2011, a team from Mauritian Wildlife was delighted to identify the a specimen of the Jumellea Recurva orchid growing on the trunk a tree near the river at the L’Exemple waterfall in the Dalsign hunting area. Jumellea Recurva is native to Mauritius and Reunion Island. While Reunion island has a population of approx. 1000 specimens, here in Mauritius, the species was only recently rediscovered. In March 2001, 10 specimens were found. Then in 2011, three more plants were found in the Pétrin forest, and 2 on Pouce mountain. Other specimens may have been found in the south, however, we will have to wait until they fl ower to be absolutely certain. History Notes

he origins of Bel Ombre date back to 1765 when a concession of 2,200 acres was granted to Messrs. Simon Rémirac and Claude de la Roche of Ronzet. Bernardin de St Pierre, the writer, was the first to mention the place in 1773. Nicholas Cere, the navigator, visited the site in 1782. Mathew Flinders, the explorer, anchored his schooner the ‘Cumberland’ in the Baie du Cap in 1803 on the way back T from Australia. The Bel Ombre sugar factory was built around 1802. The property was sold to Mr. Callixte Chantoiseau in 1807 who in turn sold it to Mr. Charles Telfair in 1816.

Charles Telfair, the renowned botanist, left his mark on the region which he developed and where he lived between 1816 and 1820. He was the first sugar planter to introduce agricultural implements to Mauritius, which were quaintly called ‘pioche bef‘ at the time. He also installed the first large horizontal mill in 1819. A pioneer in the field of agricultural diversification, Telfair created extensive gardens and orchards at Bel Ombre. At a time when social parity was far from advanced, he treated his workers with great consideration and he paid particular attention to their conditions of employment, housing, nutrition and hygiene.

Telfair died in 1833. Some time before he had sold the bulk of his estate to Messrs. Blancar, Waugh and Lesage. Telfair’s heirs sold their share to Mr. Gaston d’Emmerez. The property consisted of 5.000 acres at the time.

The ‘Bel Ombre Sugar Estate Company’ was formed in 1833 for the purchase of the Bel Ombre, Beau Champ and Sainte Marie estates. The new property then consisted of 8.233 acres. Three years later, the company was wound up. Bel Ombre became the property of Messrs. Bélouguet and Monville; Beau Champ that of Messrs. Simeon, Paul and Augustus Eynaud, and Sainte Marie went to Mr. Jules Ramp.

In 1886, 2.175 acres of forest at Bel Ombre were sold to the Colonial Government and the rest of the property was sold to Messrs. Taleb and Mamoojee. Mr. H. Salemohamed bought the property in 1898 and sold it the same year to Mr. Hajee Jackaria Hajee Ahmed who bought Beau Champ and St Marie at the same time.

The property remained in the hands of those monsieur until 1910 but management of the estate was always entrusted to Europeans. Mr. Hajee Jackaria Hajee Ahmed himself never came to Mauritius though he sent representatives (supervisors) to see how the property was managed. These supervisors seem to have had a penchant for the good life and for their harems and they had a large colonial house built for their ‘wives’ which is known today as the ‘Château de Bel Ombre’.

On March 3, 1910, Messrs. James Albert Wilson, Eugene de Rosnay, Edward Rouillard, Emile Sauzier and Oscar Pilot formed the ‘Sugar Company of Bel Ombre Ltd.’ and they bought the Bel Ombre, Beau Champ and Sainte Marie estates.

From 1910 to 1961, the company bought a number of small properties among which the most important were: ‘Frederica’ in 1914, “Bon Courage” in 1934, and Chamarel / Case Noyale in 1961.

When the Sugar Company of Bel Ombre Ltd. bought the property from its previous owners, only 850 acres were under sugar cane cultivation and sugar production was approximately 1,500 tons annually.

In 1971, the Sugar Company of Bel Ombre Ltd. searching for a new injection of capital, offered a majority fi nancial share to the ‘South West Tourist Development Company’. This event coincided with the results of a feasibility study on tourism opportunities in the south-west region of Mauritius and also with a period of unprecedented social and industrial upheaval in the country in general and in the sugar industry, docks and transport sector in particular. Bel Ombre ? There is a pond on the Bel Ombre sugar estate which is home to a species of salmon-like fish like called the “shadow” (“ombre”) and which the first tenant of the estate called “Bel Ombre” because one of them was enormous. The name “ombre” (“shadow”) comes from the speed with which this fish moves.

The “ombre” is a handsome silver fish with a green or blue back, yellow and gray stripes on its sides, dotted with small black spots, and big orange dorsal fin with purple spots between the spines.

Situated in the south west of Mauritius, Le Domaine de Bel Ombre is emblematic of the wilderness and raw beauty of the in which it lies. Stretching from the village of St Martin to La Rivière des Galets, the two-thousand-five-hundred hectares composing the estate are a treasure of diversity. Created in 1765, the estate is a tribute to serenity and natural splendour and is today one of the finest hospitality destinations on the island.

Once a sugar plantation owned by French cultivators, Domaine de Bel Ombre has evolved into a haven where the past and present have beautifully come together. We owe the beauty of Domaine de Bel Ombre to Charles Telfair, who two hundred years ago discovered Bel Ombre on the South West coast of Mauritius. Seduced by its natural beauty and opulent nature, Telfair made this extraordinary corner of the island his home. From 1816 to 1833, Charles Telfair substantially developed the region with his social, botanical and engineering innovations.

1910 saw the creation of Bel Ombre Sugar Estate. Specialised in the cultivation of sugar cane, the Estate created employment, provided skills and expertise and promoted industrialisation. The modernisation process of the Mauritian sugar industry led to the closure of the Bel Ombre sugar factory in 1998 and prompted the need to reintegrate the local workforce. This called for a paradigm shift, a diversification of activities and a new ideology. A decade later, the tourism and leisure industry, pioneered by a talented and visionary team of experts has led to the rebirth of the south west.

Stretching from the mountains to a turquoise lagoon, Le Domaine de Bel Ombre is nature’s theatre of dreams. The heart of the Domaine is the vast and lush Frédérica Nature Reserve rich in indigenous flora and fauna that has been meticulously conserved. Nearby is the World Heritage site of Le Morne Brabant Mountain, and Chamarel with its vividly hued rolling ‘coloured earths’. The Domaine is home to Le Château de Bel Ombre, luxury resorts, exclusive spas, the world-class 18-hole Heritage Golf Club championship course and the award-winning Heritage The Villas (Villas Valriche IRS) residential estate.

Domaine de Bel Ombre’s longstanding owners, Bel Ombre Sugar Company, are dedicated to preserving the genuine wonders of the Domaine and to guarantee local sustainability. The Bel Ombre Foundation for Empowerment has been created to coordinate important social and economic projects. Their commitment to the people of Bel Ombre is accompanied by the promise of a prosperous future, opportunities and a long term presence.

On the shores of the China Sea in Singapore, he learned the delights of Asia. Thai, Chinese and revealing subtle compositions. “It’s a paradise, it’s dazzling. This globe-trotter of the cooking ranges has now unpacked his bags at Heritage Le Telfair where his inventive cuisine has found its equilibrium, and his expertise has matured. MODE 2 – The artist Mode 2 is considered a pioneer of the ‘British graffiti’ movement and ‘street art’. He started with graffiti in the 80’s when the street art movement was still unknown and considered ‘underground’.

After that he worked alongside some founders of ‘hip-hop’ in London who exhibited together in Covent Garden. Mode 2 then joined the British graffiti group ‘The Chrome Angelz’ with whom he brought street art to the public’s attention. Whether his work in question is a political statement or perhaps the expression of views on religion, Mode 2’s work still shows his original style and unique brush strokes.

The work of Mode 2 is free of pretension and clearly embodies his desire to express and deal with all kinds of topics ranging from love, lust, or his relationship to hip-hop and his cultural environment, honestly and withouth fear.

“I like to blur the genres, mixing whatever comes out of reality, fantasy, or images that already exist” Mode 2. VLH - Veranda Leisure & Hospitality

he VLH hotel group has six medium range and up-market hotels, a spa and cosmetics brand, a championship golf course, a superb beach club, a late 19th chateau-restaurant and manages the operations of fifty luxury villas. The group employs 1450 people and is the hotel Tindustry subsidiary of Rogers & Co, a Mauritian diversified and publicly listed company. Previously known as the Veranda Group, VLH unveiled its new name on 30 May 2011, thus beginning a new chapter in its history.

This name change occurred because of the way in which the group has continued to expand its business portfolio. Over the last 30 years, the small family business whose venture began with Veranda Bungalow Village in Grand Baie, has become a major player in the Mauritian hotel landscape.

The name change is the affirmation of a policy of expansion and diversification begun in 2004, and the group has developed two areas of distinct and complementary activities:

- The hospitality sector, which is the primary business of the group is represented by its two hotel brands; Veranda Resorts et Heritage Resorts with an inventory of 686 rooms, and some fifty IRS Villas at the Domaine de Bel Ombre and for which Heritage Resorts runs the daily operations and rental management.

- The leisure sector, an activity that was added in recent years in addition to the hotels, features most notably the Domaine de Bel Ombre which includes the C Beach Club as the latest addition to the group in 2011, the Heritage Golf Club and the Château de Bel Ombre. Finally Seven Colours, established in 2004 is its Well-Being brand and which is represented in all its hotels and is the premier Mauritian brand for spas and cosmetics. The VLH brand structure
