CHARLES O’BRIEN: A SCOTTISH ROMANTIC REDISCOVERED by John Purser Charles O’Brien was born in 1882 in Eastbourne, where his parents, normally based in Edinburgh, were staying for the summer season. His father, Frederick Edward Fitzgerald O’Brien, had worked as a trombonist in the first orchestra to be established in Eastbourne and there, in 1881, he had met and married Elise Ware. They would return there now and again, perhaps to visit her family, whose roots were in France: Elise’s grandfather had been a Girondin who had plotted against Robespierre and, in the words of Charles O’Brien’s son, Sir Frederick,1 ‘had to choose between exile and the guillotine. He chose the former and escaped to England, hence the Eastbourne connection’.2 Elise died tragically in 1919, after being struck by an army vehicle. As well as the trombone, Frederick Edward O’Brien played violin and viola and attempted, unsuccessfully, to teach his grandchildren the violin: ‘it was like snakes and ladders – one minor mistake and we had to start at the beginning again’, Sir Frederick recalled.3 Music went further back in the family than Charles’ father. His grandfather, Charles James O’Brien (1821–76) was also a composer and played the French horn, and his great-grandfather, Cornelius O’Brien (1775 or 1776–1867), who was born in Cork, was principal horn at Covent Garden. Charles O’Brien’s musical education was of the best. One of his early teachers was Thomas Henry Collinson (1858–1928) – father of the Francis Collinson who wrote The Traditional and National Music of Scotland.4 The elder Collinson was organist at St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, as well as conductor of the Edinburgh Choral Union, in which he was succeeded by O’Brien himself. -

It is based largely on a country-level benchmarking index that evaluates how stakeholders are responding to the scourge of sexual violence against children in 40 selected countries. -
1 This Was the Year That the Shadows Appeared As Singers Before a Pan
1975 This was the year that The Shadows appeared as singers before a pan-European audience. The earlier 1973 initiative had not produced the desired outcome and by 1974 they were in the wilderness and did not exist as a viable group. They got together to perform at the Palladium on 27 October of that year as a personal tribute to and for the benefit of the widow of BBC producer Colin Charman. BBC boss Bill Cotton heard them and suggested that they might like to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest the following year. They accepted, formed a working ensemble, and undertook a few local ‘practice’ gigs while preparing and practising the songs. The chosen song, [254] LET ME BE THE ONE, was one of six put forward for the UK’s entry in the Eurovision Contest of 1975, and was the last of the contenders performed over six successive weeks on Lulu’s BBC TV show at the start of the year. It was duly televised in Stockholm on 22 March but came in second to Dutch group Teach-In’s lyrically challenged ‘Dinge-Dong’ ~ English title ‘Ding-A-Dong’ (“Ding- A-Dong every hour,/ When you pick a flower …”), which impressed the British public sufficiently to enjoy a seven-week residence in the Singles charts (climbing to No.13). No such good fortune attended the release of The Shadows’ follow-up to their charting Eurovision Single, another piece from the same composer, the staggeringly inane, hopelessly unamusing [266] RUN BILLY RUN (“Closed my eyes, I tried countin’ sheep,/ Desp-rate Dan just looked like Bo-Peep,/ I can’t sleep”). -

The Cheviot is surely the most influential Scottish radical play of the 1970s – and, arguably, since – and songs fulfil a key role in its dramatic form and impact. Other Scottish playwrights like Hector MacMillan, Ian Brown and Stewart Conn did use satirical songs in plays in the 1970s, but their use was intermittent, examples including MacMillan’s The Rising (1973), Brown’s Carnegie (1973) or Conn’s Thistlewood (1975), while the plays presented by 7:84 (Scotland) and its later offshoot Wildcat Theatre Company followed very much the example of The Cheviot in embedding songs in the dramatic text. Given the impact of McGrath’s play it has been possible, of course, from time to time to find an arguably overstated role for it in Scottish theatre.
