Abstract The following thesis looks at the subject of communist-oriented opposition in the GDR. More specifically, it considers how this phenomenon has been reconstructed in the state-mandated memory landscape of the Federal Republic of Germany since unification in 1990. It does so by presenting three case studies of particular representative value. The first looks at the former member of the Politbüro Paul Merker and how his entanglement in questions surrounding antifascism and antisemitism in the 1950s has become a significant trope in narratives of national (de-)legitimisation since 1990. The second delves into the phenomenon of the dissident through the aperture of prominent singer-songwriter, Wolf Biermann, who was famously exiled in 1976. -

The written permission of Cambridge University Press must be obtained for commercial re-use or in order to create a derivative work. doi: 10.1017/S1478572220000195 Latin American Songs in the GDR and the East German Singer-Songwriter Repertoire (1970–2000): Gerhard Schöne’s ‘Meine Geschwister’ in the Light of Translation Studies CHRISTINA RICHTER-IBÁÑEZ Abstract Latin American folkloric-popular music had an impact on the music scenes of both Germanies, where singer-songwriters emerged and became interested in Chilean Nueva Canción, the Argentinian Movimiento del Nuevo Cancionero, and Cuban Nueva Trova in the 1970s. Particularly interesting in this context is the contact of some Latin American countries with the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Based on translation theory and articles on Nueva Canción in Europe, this article examines the Latin American presence at the Political Song Festival in East Berlin and analyses some publications that focus on this annual event. The article focuses on the singer-songwriter Gerhard Schöne, who during the 1980s, took Nicaragua as a political example, as is shown in songs, and who also composed German lyrics to melodies by Violeta Parra, Atahualpa Yupanqui, and Silvio Rodríguez, transferring the songs into a new context. -

Signed: ______________________________ i Abstract Folk Music in the German Democratic Republic: Exploring Lived Musical Experience and Post-War German Folk Music Discourses Felix Morgenstern Following the drastic co-option of German folk music in the ideological service of the Nazi regime during the Third Reich (1933-1945), the genre’s performative practice was left highly marginalised. Confronted with this fragility, revival activists in both German post-war states initially recast German folk music in a nostalgic recourse to the soundscape and song themes of Irish and Scottish music, before reconnecting with a 19th century oppositional German- language folk song repertoire. In the GDR, songs of the 1848 Revolution were curated as part of the state’s ‘democratic’ cultural heritage and could not be readily censored. -

BROWN Downloaded from https://academic.oup.com/ahr/article/114/1/69/43903 by guest on 30 September 2021 THE YOUTH REBELLIONS OF THE LATE 1960s—associated in the popular and scholarly consciousness with the year 1968—were part of a global event. They embraced, in differing forms, the capitalist West as well as the communist East, the countries of the Third World as well as those of the First and Second. The term “1968” has become a shorthand not only for a particular series of events—social unrest in lo- cations as diverse as Mexico and China, France and Japan, Czechoslovakia and the United States—but for a certain type of interconnectedness closely associated with the process of globalization shaping the contemporary world. Yet the study of “1968” poses a set of profound conceptual and practical difficulties. Alongside the basic problem of analyzing an ill-defined “event” with amorphous contours, decentralized agency, and (in most cases) little lasting institutional signature, there is the question of how exactly its “globality” is to be studied. However global in scope and orien- tation, “1968” was played out in and around specific national contexts, and it is to these that we must look to understand the larger, world event. Yet the nation-state cannot function as our primary frame of reference, not only because of the impor- tance of transnational influences in shaping local events, but because of how inti- mately “1968” was linked to the creation of globalizing imagined communities that cut across national boundaries.1 Work on “1968” has increasingly emphasized comparative perspectives and the investigation of transnational linkages; yet it has also exhibited a tendency to take the “global” somewhat for granted. -

I. Le phénomène de «l'identité» L'identité, sa définition, sa recherche et son affirmation sont l'une des préoccupations majeures de notre époque. Pas une semaine ne s'écoule sans que le lecteur de la presse française ou étrangère se voie poser la question identitaire sous différentes formulations qui reviennent souvent à l'alternative : qui sont-ils ? Qui sommes-nous ? Le référent du «nous» et du «ils» est d’ailleurs dans la plupart des cas assez mal défini. En 1975, Claude Lévi-Strauss remarquait de façon polémique dans l'introduction à son séminaire sur L'identité qu'«une mode prétentieuse (..) exploite» ce terme et évoquait «la fameuse crise de l'identité dont on nous rebat les oreilles»1 ; il souhaitait replacer d'emblée l'identité dans son contexte, et considérer la préoccupation identitaire comme un révélateur de l'état des sociétés où elle apparaît : «La vérité est que réduite à ses aspects subjectifs, une crise d'identité n'offre pas d'intérêt intrinsèque. Mieux vaudrait regarder en face les conditions objectives dont elle est le symptôme et qu'elle reflète». Lévi-Strauss voit dans la préoccupation identitaire une traduction de l'ethnocentrisme occidental : «A supposer que l'identité ait elle aussi ses relations d'incertitudes, la foi que nous mettons encore en elle pourrait n'être que le reflet d'un état de civilisation dont la durée aura été limitée à quelques siècles. -

Digital Histories Digital Digital Histories Istorical Scholarship Is Currently Undergoing a Digital Turn
Digital Histories Digital Histories istorical scholarship is currently undergoing a digital turn. All historians have experienced this change in one Emergent Approaches within the New Digital History Hway or another, by writing on word processors, applying quantitative methods on digitalized source materials, or using Edited by internet resources and digital tools. Mats Fridlund, Digital Histories showcases this emerging wave of digital Mila Oiva history research. It presents work by historians who – on their & Petri Paju own or through collaborations with e.g. information technology specialists – have uncovered new, empirical historical knowledge through digital and computational methods. The topics of the volume range from the medieval period to the present day, including various parts of Europe. The chapters apply an exemplary array of methods, such as digital metadata analysis, by Edited machine learning, network analysis, topic modelling, named entity recognition, collocation analysis, critical search, and text and data mining.
