ALL

Finally, please enjoy the Christmas break and enjoy From the Principal the company of your sons and daughters (!) – we have asked them to use their time profitably by Dear Parents/Carers making you lots of hot drinks. It has been a great term since Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a September and the school is really Happy New Year. settled and calm. As in previous terms, our new students (Year 7 Tom Waterworth and, for the last time, Year 9) bring a Principal different dimension to our and are a great credit to us. Both groups are also quite lively! I have been delighted at the way these, our new students, and our new staff have settled in and we still continue to receive positive comments about the warm welcome and the calm atmosphere when visitors enter the building. There has been a strong Governor/Sponsor presence in the Academy this term and Sponsors have been impressed with the purposeful atmosphere and the improvement in our students’ attitude to learning. They advise that our students are happy and that they are proud of their new environment. Students continue to advise us of the improvement in the quality of teaching. As the end of term approaches, we give our best thanks to colleagues who are leaving – Stephanie Reed leaves us to take up post at Hawthorn Park Primary School. Good luck to you Stephanie – you have had a great seven years with us and you’ve done really well. We look forward to hearing of your future successes. We also say goodbye to Marcos Rodrigues who has worked on a temporary basis in MFL. Thanks very much and good luck in your next post.

www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org From the Principal Continued I need to advise you of a temporary change to the Leadership Team responsibilities:

Promoting Safe Travel To and From the Academy and Parking on Houghton Road Once again may I take the opportunity to remind Parents/Carers that we take student safety seriously and want to encourage all our students to travel to and from school safely. As you know, we have colleagues on the main gates at the start and end of the school day, and the gates are closed at these times so our students do not have to battle with road traffic entering/leaving the site. This arrangement is working well and we are pleased with parents’ support for this.

You will have noticed that for the last few weeks we have closed the main gates for the whole school day to further improve safety on site. Please note that in readiness for the new term in January the main gates and pedestrian gates will be automated and visitors to the Academy, whether in a car or on foot, will be able to request access to the site via an intercom system.

Finally, may I remind Parents/Carers to park sensibly on Houghton Road, well away from the zig-zag lines and giving consideration to local residents.

Parent View I am very keen that you, as Parents/Carers, have the opportunity to take part in a confidential survey about All Saints Academy. The survey is run by OfSTED and Parents/Carers can register their views once every year.

It would be very useful if you could visit www.parentview.ofsted.gov.uk to register and then to complete the questionnaire, which should not take you very much time at all. Once on the website you will be asked to register and log in. In order to do so you will need a valid email address. The page will ask you to ‘register now’, and will ask you to provide your email address and then to confirm it. It will then ask you if you are a parent or carer, how many schools your children attend and then to register. The results will help us improve the service we offer to you, our Parents/Carers, and to your children.

If you require any assistance with this, please do not hesitate to contact the Academy.

www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org 2 UNIFORM & BEHAVIOUR

Uniform Please take advantage over the Christmas holidays to ensure that your child’s uniform is correct. Specifically, girls’ skirts must be of the correct style and length (just above the knee) and bear the Academy logo. Three styles are available to purchase at Best Look in (our sole uniform supplier). It is important to note that skin tight stretchy skirts and mini skirts are not permitted. Any students wearing the wrong uniform will be dealt with according to the Uniform and/or Behaviour Management Policy (available on the website). In addition, outdoor clothing must not be worn inside the building; this includes hats, scarves and gloves.

Behaviour We re-launch the Climate for Learning to all staff and students in January with the introduction of a new electronic Behaviour Log. This log will allow colleagues to record any behaviour incidents and keep a log of how behaviours have been managed, including tracking detentions and other sanctions issued. REMINDER: The Academy is allowed to issue 20 minute detentions after school without having to notify parents in advance. If your child fails to respond to the initial steps in the Climate for Learning (a quiet word, a verbal request, moved in the classroom) then a 20 minute detention is the next step in the procedure.

Thanks for your support on both these issues.

3 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org SIXTH FORM THEATRE VISIT TO SEE ‘WOYZECK’ Sixth Form Drama and Theatre Studies students had the opportunity to see Georg Buchner’s masterpiece ‘Woyzeck’ at the Redbridge Drama Centre in London. The students must study the script and focus on an analysis of a live performance as part of the final exam in the A2 course.

This brand new adaptation told us the desperate story of a lowly soldier plagued by visions of the apocalypse and plunged into homicidal lunacy by the world around him. We were encouraged to question why he behaved in the way he did. This presentation fused gothic storytelling, puppetry, song, live music and a spine chilling sound track, taking us, the audience into a world that was disturbingly atmospheric, heartbreakingly poignant, darkly comic and delightfully interactive.

“As well as helping us to prepare for our final sit-down exam, the play has inspired us as a group to consider this style of performance for our own devised piece in January 2015! This is the first time we had experienced a ‘promenade’ style of theatre and it was very thought provoking!” Laura Harris.

“’Woyzeck’ is an unusual play, particularly in its themes and presentation in a ‘promenade’ style, but it was extremely interesting and I felt like it has given me much to think about” Lucas Robinson.

“It was the most intriguing and real piece of theatre I have ever seen” Jordan Barnes.

Once again the School Games Partnership for Dunstable and has had an excellent start to the year. We have had many competitions already with great support from Sports Leaders from All Saints Academy, Houghton Regis Academy, Streetfield and . I am very excited to announce that we now have a new group of Sports Leaders here at All Saints who will be working alongside our existing Leaders. Once again they will have plenty of opportunity throughout the year to attend School Games festivals and extra-curricular activities to develop the skills needed to be a good leader. They are very lucky to have such positive and encouraging role models from our Year 11 and Sixth Form leaders. Two of our Sixth Form leaders, Aeilish Wynne and Ellie Bastian, are now completing their Level 3 Higher Certificate in Sports Leadership; this is due to the number of previous Sports Leader events they have attended and the effort they have put into both Academy sport and community clubs. We wish them all the best in completing the course. Due to the participation of All Saints Academy’s sports teams and the work our Sports Leaders do with the School Games festivals, the Academy received a Bronze School Games Mark award this year. Congratulations to all staff in the Sports, Health and Leisure Curriculum Area who put in a huge amount of effort to run extra-curricular clubs and fixtures, as well as all the students who attend and the Sports Leaders who help with these clubs and attend festivals. Throughout the year so far the School Games Partnership has run many events such as table tennis, badminton, dodgeball, tag rugby, sports hall athletics and cross country. We have also provided training for Handball for staff in and around Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Luton and Leighton Buzzard. Well done to all the schools who have attended the School Games events so far and congratulations to the following winners from Dunstable and Houghton Regis: Years 5 & 6 Dodgeball - Priory Middle U16 Girls’ Table Tennis - All Saints Academy U16 Boys‘ Dodgeball, U19 Boys’ Dodgeball & Years 7 & 8 mixed Dodgeball - All Saints Academy Years 1 & 2 Sports Hall Athletics - St Christopher’s Years 7 & 8 Boys’ & Girls’ Table Tennis - Streetfield Years 3 & 4 Sports Hall Athletics - Slip End Years 5 & 6 mixed Table Tennis - Caddington Village Years 5 & 6 mixed Basketball - Priory Middle

5 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org UK MATHS CHALLENGE Coulter McDowell Lecture at the Royal Holloway University

On 22 October 2014 five of our A Level students spent an enjoyable and entertaining evening listening to Dr Vicky Neale explaining, with the aid of her special pencil, about the ‘Seven facts you need to know about Prime Numbers’. (Do you know their connection with the number 6?). All students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and are already looking forward to the possibility of attending the event again next year. In the words of one student ‘I could understand all of it so it must be good’.

UKMT Senior Individual and Team events This year we not only entered the National Individual competition but also took a team of four Year 12 students to compete against 29 other teams at Cambridge University in one of the Regional Heats. As always, the Students did themselves proud, winning five Bronze awards and managing to hold their own amongst the very fierce competition at Cambridge. Next to work their brains are the Year 10s!

Year 6 Maths Competition On 23 October 2014 we hosted our first Year 6 Maths competition. Seven teams of four from Ashton Middle, Hawthorn Park Primary, Thomas Whitehead Primary and Hadrian Academy were involved in two rounds of questions which were ‘quite challenging’ to quote one of the accompanying teachers. Two and a half hours later, after much puzzlement, deep discussion and a little bit of running around, there was an expectant hush in the room awaiting the results. It was close between second and third place but the clear winners and the school to be first to have their name on the trophy was and they had a Year 5 student in their team too!

Everyone commented on how much they had enjoyed it and how they can do better next year.

Well done to all who took part!

Wizard of Oz rehearsals are well and truly underway and students are once again proving themselves to be dedicated and excellent at working together as a team.

The cast and staff are working tirelessly in rehearsals to learn and perfect the songs, dances and scenes in preparation for the performances in February 2015.

This year’s musical will be bigger and better than the previous success of Grease and tickets will go on sale from Student Reception around mid January priced at £5.00 for adults and £3.00 concessions including refreshments.

7 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org VISIT TO PARIS Whilst I believe the visit to Paris to be a great success, I think it is much better that you hear about it from the students. I would like to thank them for their excellent behaviour and the enjoyment it gave me to see them experience this amazing city. Many thanks also go to Miss Smith, Mrs Beckley-Lines and Mr Gilbert for their roles in supervising the students for a jam-packed 72 hours! Rachel Hart CL for Creating & Designing

“I really enjoyed the visit to Paris in October; it was such an amazing experience. I have to say one of the things I enjoyed the most was going to Disneyland Paris. I also enjoyed going up the Montparnasse Tower—the view from this Tower was out of this world. This was my first time away from my parents and friends so I learned how to be independent. Overall, the Paris visit was truly amazing and I would really love to go back". Amy Cox

“After asking Miss Hart to organise an Art visit to Paris I couldn't have asked for more! All the sights that we saw, including the Musee d'Orsay, Arc de Triomphe and the Eifel Tower, and of course Disneyland, was remarkable! It gave us inspirations to use within our Art A-Levels. Being on foot for 90% of the time was worth the walk and Paris is a city that will never be forgotten!” Tayla Read

www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org 8 “When we went to Paris we visited the Musée d’Orsay, Montparnasse Tower, Musée du Lourve, Arc de Triomphe and Disneyland Paris. Looking around the two Art galleries was an amazing experience because we were able to view famous pieces of art such as the Mona Lisa and Van Gogh’s self-portrait, which was a very surreal experience. Also being able view the Paris skyline from the Montparnasse Tower was a very relaxing and beautiful experience. “ Kerrie Loughnane

9 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org COUNTY DODGEBALL FINAL Congratulations to the Years 7 and 8 Dodgeball team who qualified to attend the County Dodgeball Finals on Wednesday 12 November 2014. After playing four matches, students finished in joint second in their pool of games. Usually, the top four teams play for first, second, third and fourth places, however due to a late start the students were unable to play their final game to battle for third place. Students should be very pleased with their performance on the day and their representation of the Academy at the county finals. RAISING ACHIEVEMENT IN YEAR 11

Period 11 sessions have been a great success this term and will continue in the New Year. The timetable on page 11 details the sessions which are currently running for students. There may be small changes to the timetable in January 2015 depending on results from the mock exams. The purpose of these sessions is to provide extra time and support to ensure that Year 11 students are fully prepared for their exams and Controlled Assessments to come. This will in turn ensure that students are in the best possible position when the time comes for them to choose the next pathway in their education. If you have any further questions regarding Period 11 sessions, please contact Miss Carey or Mrs Spicer. Jo Carey CL - Sport Health and Leisure

In addition, Mandy Mullane joins us as Teacher of English.

STUDENT JOURNALIST All Saints is delighted to announce that Philippa Jones, Sixth Form Student, has joined the Newsletter Planning Team as a Student Journalist and will be writing articles about the Academy for future editions of the All Saints Advocate. “The reason I wanted be involved in this position is that I'm interested in pursuing journalism, how the media portrays events, and the effects this has on how the public perceive certain issues. Something I'm really excited about are the opportunities which journalists have to travel in order to write about different issues. In future I want to go to University to study English and History, with a year studying abroad, and I feel that this, although not directly linked to journalism, will allow me to study things I enjoy while opening up opportunities towards a career in the profession. The All Saints Advocate will be a stepping stone towards this, as it will give me an insight into the complexities of research, documenting current events and the inner workings of the industry on a small scale.” Philippa is a welcome addition to the Team and we hope that you will enjoy reading her valuable contributions. Please join us in supporting Philippa in this venture. Sharon Reid PA to Principal

www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org 12 OFFICE INFORMATION

Lost Property and Student Lockers Lost property items are handed in to Student Reception and may be collected by students before or after school and during breaks or lunchtime. We do our best to return items to students as soon as possible and we are unable to hold items indefinitely and items are displayed every Friday so students can look for lost property. Any unclaimed items are sent to charity at the end of each half-term. Please help us by writing your child’s name in items of clothes and bags so we can return items directly and promptly. We recommend that your child does not bring expensive items (eg coats/hoodies) to school as the Academy cannot take responsibility for any items which are lost or damaged. This term we have sent some quality branded items to the charity shop: Superdry, Helly Hansen, Ralph Lauren! Finally, if your child does not yet have a locker, please encourage them to ask at Student Reception. For a £5 deposit your child can have their own locker for the time they remain at All Saints.

What do you want to see in your newsletter? We hope that as parents/carers you enjoy receiving a copy of the All Saints Advocate and celebrate in our good news stories. We are mindful that regular communication with parents/carers is essential and it would be useful to know what information you would like us to share with you. If you have any suggestions, please email [email protected] We look forward to hearing from you.

Questionnaire about Advocate As our school population grows, we now print 1000 copies of the All Saints Advocate every half-term. In an effort to save costs and to become a ‘greener organisation’ we are considering ways of issuing the newsletter electronically. I would be grateful if you would take the time to complete the questionnaire below and return it to the Academy via your child.

13 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY & ARMISTICE DAY This year’s remembrance was special for several reasons. Not only is 2014 the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War, marked by the moving art installation at the Tower of London seen by many, but local people joined together for a Festival of Remembrance at All Saints Church in Houghton Regis. This took place on the Eve of Remembrance Sunday and included the dedication of a new Book of Remembrance of local people – many teenagers - killed while serving their country. The book was designed and produced by the Academy for display at the church. Many current and former students were involved in the acts of remembrance in Houghton Regis and Dunstable through the local Cadet Units, wreaths being placed by students on Armistice Day. Students want to be at these events, valuing the shared unspoken acts of respectful silence; their presence is also cherished by the wider community. “We wore our cadet uniforms to show our respect; it’s important to show respect. I enjoyed the food on the way back!” Kray Cooley, Year 8 “It was exciting to be there in uniform with so many people.” Yasmine Podder, Year 8

www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org 14 FREE SCHOOL MEALS AND THE PUPIL PREMIUM

You may already be aware that the government started an initiative where schools are given extra funding to spend on the education of young people who are or have been eligible for free school meals within the past six years. The name given to this is Pupil Premium. Like other schools, we are in receipt of this funding and I am writing to let you know about some of the ways your child will be able to benefit from this funding.

The money has to be spent on improving attainment outcomes, i.e. things which will help your child get higher grades. It is not designed to be spent on things like the annual Ski Trip (sadly!) but instead on staff training, extra members of staff, specific group work and other interventions which mean that if a child is falling behind we can pull out all the stops to ensure that they catch up again.

Statistics tell us that nationally, students who are eligible for free school meals do not perform as well in their exams as students who are not eligible. Of course, this may not be the case for your child. At All Saints Academy we are committed to ensuring that all students reach their potential; this means that some students will benefit from tailor made support packages.

How is Pupil Premium used?

The funding can be used for a range of interventions including: help with costs of educational visits, music fees, teaching assistant staff, after school programmes, equipment and much more.

Who is eligible for Free School Meals and Pupil Premium?

If you think that you are eligible to apply for FSMs for your child, or if you are not sure, you may want to contact the CBC Customer Services helpdesk on 0300 300 8000. A member of their team will be able to advise you. When calling, it will help if you have your National Insurance number to hand. In this way, you will be able to register for Free School Meals immediately should you be eligible to do so.

In order to claim FSMs a parent/carer must be claiming one of the following benefits: • Income support; or • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance; or • Income Related Employment and Support Allowance (this benefit was introduced from 27 October 2008); or • Child Tax Credit, but who are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and whose annual income (as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs) does not exceed £16,190; or • Support under part VI of the Immigration & asylum Act 1999; or  Guarantee element of State Pension Credit

www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org 16 ATTENDANCE Congratulations We would like to say Well Done to the students who received a Selection Box for maintaining 100% attendance this academic year. Keep up the good work! Students also received rewards for being on or above our Academy target of 95%, and the most improved attendance.

Medical Appointments A reminder to Parents/Carers that medical appointments should be made out of school hours where possible. We do appreciate that this is sometimes difficult and would ask that students only take the necessary time out of school, not the whole day. Medical evidence will be requested for all students.

Punctuality Please ensure that your child arrives on time for school. Students need to be on the Academy premises by 8.25am so that they will not be late to registration at 8.30am. Students who arrive late will be required to do a 20 minute detention on the same day, failure to attend will result in an hour detention with their Achievement Leader on a Friday afternoon. Being frequently late for school adds up to lost learning: Arriving 5 minutes late every day adds up to over 3 days lost each year Arriving 15 minutes late every day is the same as being absent for 2 weeks a year Arriving 30 minutes late every day is the same as being absent for 19 days a year

Attendance & Persistent Absentees The Academy attendance target is 95%; any students below this will be monitored and if they drop below 85% All Saints Academy will need medical evidence to be able to approve any absence. Medical evidence can be any one of the following: copy of an appointment card/letter, a note from the GP/Practice Nurse giving reason for absence, a copy of a prescription made out to the student, or any other suitable documentary evidence. A decision on whether or not to authorise the absence will be made by the Academy.

To give you an example of how your child’s attendance can be affected please see the facts below:

20 days off per school year = 90% attendance 90% attendance = 4 whole weeks off school 90% attendance in Years 7 – 11 means half a year off school 90% attendance for your child throughout Primary and means they will have missed a whole year of school in their education

Absence All Absences should be reported at the earliest possible convenience on each day of absence, by calling 01582 619700 and selecting Option 2. Please be aware if the Academy has not been advised of student absence there is every likely hood that Mr Copperwheat from Access & Inclusion Services (was known as the Education Welfare Officer) will carry out a door knock and visit the family home.

Holidays during term time Mr Copperwheat is supporting the Academy in the use of Fixed Penalty Notices where parents/carers take students out of the Academy for a holiday. Penalty Notice fines for holidays in term time are £60 per parent per child if paid within 21 days and £120 if paid between 22 and 28 days.

May I thank you for your continued support in ensuring that attendance at All Saints Academy continues to improve.

Debbie Grayson Attendance Officer

17 www.allsaintsacademydunstable.org FIRST AID PROCEDURES

A reminder to Parents/Carers that the Academy does not employ a nurse and members of staff are not medically trained. However, a number of staff are trained in First Aid. The following procedure should be followed in the event of a first aid incident or in the event that a student feels unwell:

 If a student feels unwell, they should report to Student Reception where a first aid trained member of staff will make an assessment. In the majority of cases students are encouraged to return to lessons unless they are obviously very unwell. It is worth noting that the Academy cannot issue painkillers to students and any student reporting a headache will be assessed, offered a drink of water and encouraged to return to class as soon as possible with the option of returning if they continue to feel

unwell or their symptoms become worse.

 If a first aid trained member of staff feels that a student is too unwell to remain in school, they will contact the Parent/Carer to get permission to send the student home or to make arrangements for the

student to be collected.

 Only once all of these steps have been followed are students permitted to sign out of the Academy. Students should NOT contact their Parents/Carers via mobile phones and ask to be collected without the above procedures having been followed, otherwise the absence will be recorded as unauthorised.

The Academy thanks Parents/Carers for their continued support in this regard.

EMERGENCY CONTACT DETAILS

A reminder for all Parent/Carers to please advise the Academy of any change of address or telephone numbers. It is important that our records are up-to-date; correct telephone numbers are vital in order that we can make contact in the event of an emergency. VISITORS’ CAR PARKING

Visitors’ parking on site is limited but we are pleased to advise that there are six allocated short-stay parking spaces (including one designated disabled parking space) immediately outside the Main Reception for visitors to the Academy, including our Parents/Carers.

CHANGE TO SWITCHBOARD OPTIONS

Please be aware that the options at switchboard, between 8.00am and 4.00pm (1.00pm on Friday) have been amended. Please listen to the whole message before selecting the option you require.
