BIOGRAPHY

Ivete Sangalo was born in , interior of , to a family of musicians. She started singing as a child and during breaks at school she also played acoustic guitar and at family parties was in charge of the percussion. At 17, she moved to Salvador to work as a model. But her passion for music, which had been her dream, soon took over.

She started out, as most successful artists do, performing in small bars. She then performed few concerts in the interior of Bahia and further afield in the adjoining state of Pernambuco. One of the first highlights of her 'live' career was when she was invited to open for Geraldo Azevedo at The João Gilberto Theater at the Cultural Centre in Juazeiro.

Back in Salvador, she was invited to participate in the 'micareta' (street ) in Morro do Chapéu. There she met Jonga Cunha, the producer and founder of carnival group Bloco Eva. Her reign as the singer in his band, '' was about to begin.

With 'Banda Eva' Ivete released 6 albums, which sold more than 4 million copies in (and since then, as a solo artist, she has sold 7.0 million copies more 11 Million in total). In (year?) she won the National Award as 'Best Performer'.

Officially, Ivete's solo career started on Ash Wednesday 1999, her last appearance at carnival with 'Banda Eva'. Between April and June of that same year, she recorded 14 songs of her debut solo album "". Following that, she released "" and then started her national tour in Salvador (as she says, she always kicks off her tours in the capital of Bahia) at the same exhibition park where she launched her 3rd solo album "Festa" in 2001. Her fourth album "Clube Carnavalesco" was released in August 2003 and then in March 2004, she released her 5th solo album "MTV ao Vivo, Ivete Sangalo".

During 2004 and 2005 Ivete took her first steps outside Brasil, taking Portugal by storm at “Rock-in-Rio in Lisbon” in 2004 and then following it up in 2005 when she sold out 18,500 seats at Lisbon's prestigious Atlantico Pavilhao and went on to play her first shows in , Germany and Switzerland.

After the release of her sixth solo album “As Super Novas” at the end of 2005 Ivete decided to extend her international career in World Cup year 2006, with more dates in Portugal (including a 2nd visit to “Rock-in-Rio in Lisbon”) along with dates in Germany, France, the UK, Spain and other European capitals currently being planned. The organisers of “Rock-in-Rio” recently paid Ivete an enormous compliment by booking her as the first confirmed artist for their rollout of “Rock-in-Rio” to South Africa and Australia in 2007.
