1 MRS BIRKBECK’S ALBUM: THE HAND-WRITTEN AND THE PRINTED IN EARLY NINETEENTH-CENTURY FEMININE CULTURE Patrizia Di Bello, Birkbeck On the 25th December 1826, George Birkbeck, successful doctor, busy lecturer and founder of the London Mechanics’ Institution (now Birkbeck College),1 wrote a long letter to John Britton, antiquary and lecturer on the history of architecture at the Institution. My dear Sir, In consequence of your recommendation of Mr Behnes as an artist, I gave him at some inconvenience a great number of sittings. […] In the course of his visits Mrs Birkbeck spoke of her Album, in which he undertook to induce some of his poetical friends to write and for which purpose he took the book with him […]. Subsequently Mrs Birkbeck has wanted the book, which is of some value especially as containing some contributions from her friends, and has written to him for it without effect. I have also written and received no answer, and we have sent a messenger about half a dozen times in vain, and our only hope of recovering the book rests in your kind interference, as he probably will not run the risk of losing your friendship by such obstinate conduct.2 Mrs Birkbeck recovered her album and carried on working on it into her old age. It is now a rare example of an early-nineteenth-century album to survive intact and with a well-documented provenance.3 Recently rediscovered in the archives of Birkbeck College, and now valuable especially for an unpublished manuscript poem by Mary Shelley, the album has been described as ‘a fascinating insight -

Oct. 2021 Walter Scott’s Late Gothic Stories Daniel Cook, University of Dundee Abstract While ‘Wandering Willie’s Tale’, above all of Walter Scott’s shorter fictions, has often been included in Gothic anthologies and period surveys, the apparently disposable pieces that appeared in The Keepsake for 1829, renegades from the novelist’s failed Chronicles of the Canongate series, have received far less attention. Read in the unlikely context of a plush Christmas gift book, ‘My Aunt Margaret’s Mirror’ and ‘The Tapestried Chamber’ repay an audience familiar with the conventions of a supernatural short story. -

As in so many of their other endeavors, 20 illus. Vol. 2, Charles Heath[y] Frederick Heath was the better businessman, although he too fell upon Heath [and] Alfred Heath: 351 pp. + 20 illus. hard times late in life. $149.95. The preceding excursion into career comparisons and what they tell us about the economics of engraving is made pos- sible by the publication of The Heath Family Engravers by Reviewed by ROBERT N. ESSICK John Heath, a retired British diplomat and the great-great- great-grandson of James. The book is no mere family mem- uery: Identify the English line engraver who was born oir, but a work of dedicated historical scholarship. Through this exhibit we are celebrating both the March 2003 return visit of the Royal Shakespeare Company to the University ofMichigan and the expansive collection ofShakespearean materials housed in the Special Collections Library. The McMillan Shakespeare Collection in the University of Michigan Library was founded in the 1880s with some 1200 items acquired from the private collections oftwo noted Shakespeare collectors: Edward H Thomson, ofFlint , Michigan, and Joseph Crosby, of Zanesville, Ohio. Senator Jam es A. McMillan, the collection's namesake, and his fomily generously provided the funds both for the acquisition of these two initial collections and for further additions made over the next twentyjive years under the direction ofUniversity ofMichigan English Professor Isaac Demmon. The McMillan Collection now numbers approximately 6,000 volumes, providing a rich and varied resource for documenting the history of how Shakespeare's works were both presented and received. With thousands of different English and American editions ranging from the Exhibit Hours Second Folio of 1632 to popular editions ofthe 191Os, as well as scholarly and popular analyses of the works, the collection traces Shakespeare's influence on Anglo-American culture from many different angles. -

Although a vital part of print culture, transforming the marketing and display of prints and invigorating the discourse on the value and status of printmaking, these exhibitions have received little attention in existing scholarship. -

Professor Mayer’s book is an insightful, eye-opening exploration of the emergence of a new type of literary celebrity at the beginning of the nineteenth century based on close readings of Walter Scott’s correspondence. Considered by Byron himself as “the first man of his time,” Scott is an ideal case study due to the immense popularity he enjoyed during his lifetime as a result of his poetic and novelistic output, especially the Waverley cycle. Beautifully contextualized through comparisons with predecessors such as Pope and Johnson, contemporaries such as Wordsworth, Southey, and Byron, and successors such as Dickens, Hardy, and Hemingway, this study sheds considerable light on the evolution of literary celebrity in general and on the brand of celebrity that Walter Scott embodied in the public consciousness of his time in particular. Unlike similar attempts at defining literary celebrity, Walter Scott and Fame provides a very nuanced analysis not only of Scott’s construction of his authorial persona and his relationship with his fans but also of his engagement with his “intimates,” colleagues, and “clients.” These four categories of correspondents form the organizing principle of the study. The section on Scott’s epistolary exchanges with his “intimates,” or individuals closest to Scott due to their position as mentors (Anna Seward, the Dukes of Buccleuch, Lord Abercorn), confidants (J.
