Industrial Relations: Carlyle's influence on Hard Times Graham Law I. Introduction The aim of the present paper is the strictly limited one of presenting detailed internal evidence of the nature and extent of the influence of the writings of Thomas Carlyle on Charles Dickens's anti-utilitarian novel of 1854 Hard Times. The principal works of Carlyle in question here are: Sartor Resartus (1833-4, cited as SR), Chartism (1839, cited as CH), Past and Present (1843, cited as P&P), and Latter-Day Pamphlets (1850, cited as LDP), three works which return explicitly to the 'Condition-of-England question' first raised in the 1929 essay 'Signs of the Times' (cited as SofT), plus the History of the French Revolution (1837, cited as FR), a book less explicitly connected to the theme of industrialism but with which Dickens appears to have been especially familiar.1 Specific citations in the extensive exemplification which follows refer to the Centenary Edition of Carlyle's works, published in thirty volumes by Chapman & Hall in 1898, using the abbreviation CE. Citations from Hard Times refer to the 'Charles Dickens' edition published by Chapman and Hall in 1868, using the abbreviation HT. Citations from the weekly family journal Dickens conducted during the 1850s, Household Words, are indicated by the abbreviation HW. The wider implications of this material, in particular with regard to Dickens's contribution to the early Victorian genre of the industrial novel and the debate on industrialisation which Carlyle called 'the Condition-of-England question,'2 are here only briefly outlined but are discussed in greater detail elsewhere.3 The relative literary status of Carlyle's social criticism and Dickens's novel is now almost precisely the reverse of that pertaining when they were first received by the Victorian reading public. -

Harris DESCRIPTION OF MANUSCRIPT MS Length: 125,000 Literary annuals were a “fad” of early nineteenth-century England – or so many critics would like us to believe: “‘The Annuals,’ wrote [Robert] Southey in 1828, ‘are now the only books bought for presents to young ladies, in which way poems formerly had their chief vent.’ And the young ladies found them much more to their liking than the manuals of conduct”1 much to the dismay of critics like Jane Wilde who declared the genre an “epidemic.” Writing in 1855, and therefore, retrospectively, Wilde refers both to the early proliferation of titles and to the “sickness” that caused readers overwhelmingly to desire, own, read, and receive annuals. Though pummeled in the British critical press, the genre nevertheless served the larger purpose of exposing a burgeoning audience of women and girls to “very many of the best lyrical poems of nearly all our most popular contemporary writers [who] appeared in the first instance in their pages,”2 including contributors William Wordsworth, Samuel Coleridge, Richard Polwhele, Lord Byron (posthumously), Felicia Hemans, Mary R. Mitford, John Clare, Maria J. Jewsbury, Letitia Elizabeth Landon, Lady Blessington, Mary Shelley, Lord Tennyson, William Thackeray, Charles Dickens, Elizabeth and Robert Browning, and many more. The genre, which began in 1822, was explicitly created for a middle-class audience due to its moderate retail cost of 12s. to £3. Initially published in duodecimo or octavo (3.5" x 5.5"), the decoratively bound volumes – filled with steel plate engravings of nationally recognized artwork and “sentimental” poetry and prose – exuded a feminine delicacy that attracted a primarily female readership. -

ROMANTIC VALUE AND THE LITERARY MARKETPLACE: WORDSWORTH, SCOTT, SHELLEY AND LANDON IN THE KEEPSAKE, 1829 by Laila Mary Ferreira B.A. (Hons.), Simon Fraser University, 2000 M.A., Simon Fraser University, 2002 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) December 2010 © Laila Mary Ferreira, 2010 Abstract “Romantic Value and the Literary Marketplace: Wordsworth, Scott, Shelley and Landon in the Keepsake, 1829” is an investigation of mediations of value in the Romantic literary marketplace. I focus on the Keepsake (1828‐1855), the most commercially successful and longest running of the nineteenth‐century gift‐books and annuals. I approach the annual as embodying the flux and intersection of traditional, commercial and aesthetic ideas of value at a time when, according to some, they were well on their way to being established as separate categories. I look in particular at the writings five now canonical Romantic era writers published in the Keepsake: William Wordsworth’s five poems; Walter Scott’s five prose pieces and one play; Mary Shelley’s fifteen short stories as well the original pieces that she contributed on behalf of Percy Shelley; and Letitia Elizabeth Landon’s twelve poems and two short stories. I look at why each writer was drawn, often several times and over many years to the Keepsake as a publication venue. My overall thesis is that these writers engaged with the Keepsake’s refinements of the annual form as an intervention into new forms of virtual sociability made available in the literary marketplace. -

1 MRS BIRKBECK’S ALBUM: THE HAND-WRITTEN AND THE PRINTED IN EARLY NINETEENTH-CENTURY FEMININE CULTURE Patrizia Di Bello, Birkbeck On the 25th December 1826, George Birkbeck, successful doctor, busy lecturer and founder of the London Mechanics’ Institution (now Birkbeck College),1 wrote a long letter to John Britton, antiquary and lecturer on the history of architecture at the Institution. My dear Sir, In consequence of your recommendation of Mr Behnes as an artist, I gave him at some inconvenience a great number of sittings. […] In the course of his visits Mrs Birkbeck spoke of her Album, in which he undertook to induce some of his poetical friends to write and for which purpose he took the book with him […]. Subsequently Mrs Birkbeck has wanted the book, which is of some value especially as containing some contributions from her friends, and has written to him for it without effect. I have also written and received no answer, and we have sent a messenger about half a dozen times in vain, and our only hope of recovering the book rests in your kind interference, as he probably will not run the risk of losing your friendship by such obstinate conduct.2 Mrs Birkbeck recovered her album and carried on working on it into her old age. It is now a rare example of an early-nineteenth-century album to survive intact and with a well-documented provenance.3 Recently rediscovered in the archives of Birkbeck College, and now valuable especially for an unpublished manuscript poem by Mary Shelley, the album has been described as ‘a fascinating insight -
