Editorial

Christmas comes but once a year, the saying goes. Every year we want to enjoy it more, think about how to do something positive, spend and waste less. Let us do that this year! If you are getting a bit over excited with the Christmas spirit do not forget there is an election as well to look forward to. Do not forget an election is not just for Christmas it is for a long time afterwards when they analyse results, and politicians make deals and “consider their position” – which nowadays means applying to go on Strictly or Help, I am a Celebrity Get Me out of here. Another bumper magazine issue which means there is a lot going on. A big thankyou once again to everyone who has worked so hard over the year in the parish to keep things going.

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us.

______Parish News 5 December 2019 Aunt Em and Christmas

Max tends to get a bit stressed this time of year. I send him out with a long shopping list and he does not seem pleased at all. I sometimes think he does not care about buying special socks for auntie or the unusual soap uncle needs. We always feel Christmas starts when we get the tree set up in the corner. I like to watch Max get it dressed and set up. Max says there is an art to Christmas tree decoration. By that he means he wants to do it his way and I am pleased to let him get on with it. We have to move the chairs around to get the tree in, and Max has to sit in a corner where he cannot see the television. Strangely he does not mind at all. He misses all those soaps and dancing programmes I enjoy. He even offered to move his chair into his shed. What a kind man! My top cooking tip for this year is to braise your root veg such as carrots and parsnips. Just prepare them and put them altogether in a pan with a little oil and cover with foil and pop in the oven. They are tastier than boiling and healthier than roasting. People often ask me how to roast potatoes and I always tell them to mind their own business. I am not sharing my secret recipes! I joke. The trick is to parboil them and let them dry off before roasting. Max says Christmas is about Jesus and Him coming into our busy world. He sometimes says sensible things. It is also about recognising Him. There is a passage in the Old Testament which seems to talk about the animals in the nativity story. I do not know if it does really.

Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth! For the ’LORD’ has spoken: ‘I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. The ox knows its master, the donkey its owner’s manger, Isaiah 1:2-4 It is about recognising God in our lives and Him coming into the world. Do have a cheerful, peaceful, good cooking Christmas. Keep in touch,

Love Em

______Parish News 6 December 2019 A Link with the Past of St John’s

I have been a keen philatelist since I was six years old and as a result I have become interested in Postal History and more recently in Social History associated with the people who wrote and received letters during the 18th and 19th centuries.

A few weeks ago, I acquired an envelope dated 1865 (see picture attached) addressed to a – Statham at 60 Wimpole Street, Cavendish Square. The main reason I was attracted to this envelope was that it had been sent by Edward , a well-known artist who was the Instructor of Historical Painting to the Royal Family from 1851 till 1871 and apart from being a celebrated artist was also a designer of stamps.

When I started to research Mr. Statham I found his full name was John Lee Statham and he was a dentist married to an American Lady called Anna Brown Cook. Their marriage certificate dated 1870 stated that he was the son of Samuel Freeman Statham, a Clerk in Holy Orders.

The 1871 census records indicated that he had been born in Buckinghamshire in 1828 while his baptismal certificate showed that he had been born and baptised in Stone.

A google search on Samuel Freeman Statham brought up a link to the Church of St John the Baptist in Stone where a stained-glass window in his memory was installed in 1913. This window is behind the main altar and is the main focal point in the church. The photos show this magnificent window and the section with the dedication which reads: “A D M G in memory of the family of the Rev Samuel Freeman Statham for five years in charge of this Parish 1824-28 and 1834-7”.

Michael Pitt-Payne

______Parish News 7 December 2019 Edward Henry Corbould was son of Henry Corbould and grandson of Richard Corbould, both painters. He was a pupil of Henry Sass, and a student at the Royal Academy He also prepared designs for new stamps, following in his father Henry's footsteps. The sole work attributed to Edward Henry in the Henry Corbould collection of works auctioned in in 1919 (auction lot 813) was purchased shortly after the auction by King George V for his philatelic collection, since it was the basis of the first Mauritius stamps.

In 1842 Prince Albert, husband of , purchased Edward Henry’s ‘Woman Taken in Adultery’ (British Royal Collection), and the artist was appointed Instructor of Historical Painting to the Royal Family in 1851. He sketched the head and shoulders of the dead prince in 1861, and in 1871 Queen Victoria commanded the exhibition of his Marriage of Sir Nigel Bruce and Agnes of Buchan.

Shortly afterwards his contract with the royal family was terminated for reasons that remain conjectural.

Edward Henry Corbould married three times

1 On 28th September 1839 to Fanny Jemima (died 1850), daughter of the engraver , by whom he had three daughters, one of whom, Isabel Fanny (Mrs. G. H. Heywood), has two daughters who are artists, Mrs. Eveline Corbould-Ellis and Mrs. Weatherley;

2 On 7th August 1851 to Anne Middleton Wilson (died 1866), by whom he had two sons, Ridley Edward Arthur Lamothe (1854–1887) and Victor Albert Louis Edward (born 1866);

3 On 15th January 1868 to Anne Melis Sanders, by whom he had one son and one daughter.

Edward Henry Corbould died at Kensington on 18th January 1905.

He has a memorial tablet in St Mary Abbots church in Kensington, London. His grandson was the noted designer Leonard Wyburd.

______Parish News 8 December 2019 This letter was posted in London on 9th March 1865 by Edward Henry Courbould to John Lee Statham who was a dentist in Wimpole Street. Postage has been paid using a Plate 80 Penny Red.

John Lee Statham was born in Stone, Buckinghamshire on 16th September 1828 and baptised at the Church of St John the Baptist in Stone on 27th October 1828. He was the youngest son of the Rev Samuel Freeman Statham and his wife Jemima Travers who had four sons and three daughters.

He qualified as a dentist and set up in practice at 60 Wimpole Street.

He married Anna Brown Cook/Pinsent an American lady at St Mary Marylebone on 28th April 1870.

Shortly before 1880 they emigrated to Yandina, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia where John Lee died on 15th August 1883. In 1913 a memorial window to his father the Rev Samuel Freeman Statham was installed at the Church of St John the Baptist in Stone, Buckinghamshire – this is where John Lee Statham was baptised.

______Parish News 9 December 2019 Advent

Advent is traditionally a time of preparation, of getting ready, of becoming more aware of the wonderful events to be celebrated in just a few weeks’ time. It can also be a time of confusion. Are we rehearsing carols, sorting out cribs and posadas, decorating the church or stripping it in preparation? In the wider world it’s already Christmas! How long have the advertisements been on television, the lights up in our town centres and the rush to order and spend more and more as year follows year. In all the busyness it is more important than ever to just pause and catch our breath, to have some still, quiet moments to reflect on the amazing fact that God expressed his love for us all by giving us Jesus, born in a simple stable over 2,000 years ago. You can imagine how Mary and Joseph would have been anxious as they waited and prepared for the birth of Jesus and we too could be feeling a little apprehensive about the demands of saying ‘yes’ to the love of God will make upon us. Just like Mary and Joseph though, we too can look forward to the new hope given to us in that birth, that very special gift of new life for each one of us. So this Advent let’s light a candle as a symbol of hope as we look forward to the celebration of Jesus’ birth as ‘The light of the world’.

An Advent Prayer: God of our deepest longing, all our hopes are met in you. You hear our heart’s cry, you know our deepest need. Meet us in this place, speak to us through the silence, touch us with your healing love, that we may share your hopes for the whole creation, in and through Jesus, the child who is to come. Amen. ______Parish News 12 December 2019 Loving Remembrance

A poignant Service of Loving Remembrance held in October, at S John Baptist, attended by residents who wanted to remember family and friends who had left their worldly life. The Service was a compilation of hymns, readings an address & prayers with timely moments of Silence for personal thoughts and recollections. Bereavement brings many mixed blessings, sadness, guilt, and loneliness.

Friendships and family links are important but its memories of time shared with a loved one causes a multitude of reactions and emotions which makes time alone difficult. This event will hopefully be repeated as it was appreciated by many.

______Parish News 18 December 2019 X Marks the Spot

I wonder which is the first general election you remember or the first time you voted? I can recall a very grainy image of Sir Alec Douglas-Home conceding to Harold Wilson. The last December general election was held from the 3rd to the 19th in December 1910 and was the last time a general election was held over several days. The background was a political stalemate, caused by the House of Lords refusing to pass a budget. The Conservatives won the largest number of votes but the Liberal Party formed a government with the support of the Irish Nationalists. I am not sure why an election would take several days. Elections seem to go on long enough now. It was only in 1872 that the secret ballot was introduced. There had been a lot of opposition to this as a few thought it an obvious prelude from household to universal suffrage'. And so it was of course. The Representation of the People Act extended the right to vote, to men aged 21 and over, whether or not they owned property, and to women aged 30 and over who resided in the constituency or occupied land or premises with a rateable value above £5, or whose husbands did. It was not until the Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act 1928 that women gained electoral equality. The 1928 Act gave the vote to women at age 21 regardless of any property qualification, which added another five million women to the electorate. In 1969 the age limit was lowered to 18. There has recently been discussion of extending voting to people over 16 and citizens of EU countries resident in this country. Traditionally you indicate you vote by marking the paper with an X against your preferred candidate. It is legal to use a tick or other mark so long it is clear who you want.

______Parish News 21 December 2019 Rock of Ages

The new hymn books in church are proving very popular. If we look at the story of hymns and hymnbooks we see that new hymn writing has often accompanied revival in the church. The psalmist, King David, wrote,

Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; It is fitting for the upright to praise him. Praise the LORD with the harp; Make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; Play skilfully, and shout for joy. Psalm 33

David wanted music to be fun, enjoyable and reverent. There are six references to a “new song” in book of Psalms. This may mean a new song especially composed or possibly an improvised piece for something for a special occasion. Turning to the New Testament times they enjoyed a good sing-song then. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:18-20. And why not? We all like a good sing. Setting psalms to music was popular in Middle Ages. It was the Reformation that gave an impetus to hymn writing with the congregation having a wider role in worship. The great hymn writer, Isaac Watts (1674–1748) complained at the age of 16, that the faithful could not even sing about their Lord, Christ Jesus because they only had the psalms.

The Methodist Revival of the 18th century created an explosion of hymn-writing in Welsh, which continued into the first half of the 19th century. Charles Wesley in the Eighteenth Century developed a new focus of expressing one's personal feelings in the relationship with God as well as simple worship. Revival in

______Parish News 22 December 2019 America led to gospel music and a new hymns by Fanny Crosby, Ira D. Sankey, and others who produced testimonial music for revivals, camp meetings, and evangelistic crusades. In the Church of hymn singing was not an integral part of worship until the early nineteenth century, and hymns were not officially allowed. From about 1800 parish churches started to use different hymn collections in informal service like the Olney Hymns (1779) by John Newton and William Cowper and A Collection of Hymns for the Use of The People Called Methodists (1779) by John Wesley and Charles Wesley A further drive to hymn singing in the Anglican Church came in the 1830s from the Oxford movement, led by John Keble and John Henry Newman. Being an ecclesiastical reform movement within the Anglican Church, the Oxford movement wanted to recover the lost treasures of the ancient Greek and Latin churches. The growing popularity of hymns inspired the publication of more than 100 hymn books during the period 1810 – 1850. In 1858, two clergymen both part of the Oxford Movement, were in conversation during a journey on the old Great Western Railway and concluded that the Church of England needed a single hymn book using hymns from the various small collections available. One of them, Francis Murray, enlisted the help of Sir Henry Baker and, before long, in 1861 the first edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern was published by a committee, called the Proprietors, chaired by Sir Henry. The first music editor was William Monk who was said to have coined the phrase 'Ancient and Modern'. About twenty clergymen, including the editors of many existing Hymnals, agreed to give up their several books in order as far as might be to promote the use of one. This committee set themselves to produce a hymn-book which would be a companion to the Book of Common Prayer. Another intention of the founders of the Hymns Ancient and Modern was that it would improve congregational worship for everybody. More than 150 years since its first publication and after sales of nearly 200 million copies, the works of Baker and Monk live on in the latest edition of the hymn book: Ancient & Modern: Hymns and Songs for Refreshing Worship (2013). Christian pop music began in the late 1960s and became very popular during the 1970s, as young hymnists sought ways in which to make the music of their religion relevant for their generation. The Billy Graham crusades in the UK in the 1980s led to a new hymn book called Mission Praise which initially used for Billy Graham’s Mission England – where thousands of people first discovered their faith – Mission Praise remains the most well-loved and widely used hymn and song book for congregational use across the world. A new hymn book was needed that combined modern and traditional hymns. It had to be acceptable to a wide variety of religious backgrounds. The book was for the use of the choirs at the meetings. I remember going to these at Aston Villa football stadium when I ______Parish News 23 December 2019 lived in Birmingham. A criticism of the book was it did not contain any seasonal hymns. A second booklet (Mission Praise 2), came out in 1987, and contained songs 283 to 647, and a new edition Mission Praise Combined was released in 1993; featuring an extra two hundred songs; expanding the collection from 647 to 798 items and renumbering and reindexing all items in approximate alphabetical order. In 1999, Complete Mission Praise was published, increasing the number of hymns to 1021.The 2005 edition adds a further 123 songs from the last few years. Complete Mission Praise: 25th Anniversary Edition was published in 2009 and added another 106 new songs resulting in 1250 overall. Christmas at Aston Sandford

As usual we will celebrate Christmas at Aston Sandford on Christmas Eve with a candlelit service of nine carols and eight readings. The church will as ever be fully decorated inside and the outside of the church floodlit. The service begins at 6 30pm and will be conducted by the Rev Jonathan Hawkins. All are most welcome to what is always a lovely and well attended occasion, so come early for a seat. Our regular monthly Communion Service with hymns will be on Sunday 15th December at 11 00am and will be conducted by the Ven Gordon Kuhrt. The church will be partially decorated in advance of Christmas. Again all are welcome. A very Happy Christmas from across the fields

ART IN NATURE

The concert “Art in Nature” performed on the 5th October 2019 at St. Peter & St. Paul church Dinton, was a tremendous success, raising £2,592.60 for the Organ Restoration Fund.

It was very well attended and of course lovely to see the church so full.

We are extremely grateful to Suzannah Knight, Mezzo-Soprano, Colin Spinks, Organist, The Witchert Chorale and their conductor, David Quinn all of whom performed free of charge.

A very enjoyable evening, ending with the audience raising their voices to join in singing “Land of Hope & Glory”!

Although the organ has had a partial clean there is still more refurbishment to be done to preserve this beautiful instrument for further generations. The Organ Restoration Committee will continue to meet and plan for future work.

My thanks to all members of the Committee for their support.

Chris Ashbridge.

______Parish News 31 December 2019 December Gardening Not a month to be very enthusiastic about as so much does depend on the weather, but given a few nice days it is pleasant to be able to walk round rake up leaves, pull up weeds and perhaps some gentle pruning. Of course there are plenty of jobs for the keen gardeners among us. Having pruned all the soft bushes they will benefit from being given a dressing of fertiliser and compost or manure. Christmas is always a busy time for indoor plants being given as presents but do not forget to look after your existing pots. Give them as much light as possible, keep them warm but not to warm and be very careful not to over water. Should one wish to make a new lawn next year then now would be an ideal time to dig over the soil ready for planting in the spring, of course it is a good time to dig over any vacant ground ready for planting If you haven’t yet protected your tender plants with fleece, it would be worth doing now in case we do get some hard frosts. Check over any stored fruit and vegetables and also stored dahlias, gladioli and chrysanthemums in case they are not keeping well. Now is a good time to sit in the warm and look through seed catalogues. Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas and New Year PS
