  • Press Information → 2020/21 Season
Press Information → 2020/21 Season THE VIENNA ① STATE BALLET 2020/21 »Along with my team and my dancers, I intend to work towards developing the Vienna State Ballet into a major hotspot of the art of dance in Austria and Europe forming an ensemble that reflects and inspires the traditions, changes and innovations of the lively metropolis, city of art and music, Vienna.« Martin Schläpfer Martin Schläpfer takes over the direction of the Vienna State Ballet with the 2020 / 21 season. The renowned Swiss choreographer and ballet director has recently led the multi-award-winning Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg to international acclaim. His works fascinate with their intensity, their virtuosity, their deeply moving images and a concise language of movement, which is understood as making music with the body, but always reflects the atmosphere and questions of today’s world. Several performances offer the opportunity to encounter Martin Schläpfer’s art – including two world premieres: Two new pieces for Vienna are being created to Gustav Mahler’s 4th Symphony and Dmitri Shostakovich’s 15th Symphony, which also mark the beginning of the intensive creative dialogue that Martin Schläpfer will be establishing with the artists of his ensemble in the coming years. As director, Martin Schläpfer is a bridge-builder who will naturally continue to cultivate the great ballet traditions, but will also enrich the programme with important contemporary artists and a great variety of choreographic signatures. The masters of American neo-classical ballet George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins will continue to be among the fixed stars of the Vienna repertoire, as will the Dutchman Hans van Manen.

Their traditional greeting to the world is born of a spirit of hope, friendship and peace. January 1st 2019 marks 60 years that ORF will have been accompanying this "Concert of Concerts" with its television cameras. In fact, the programme is now broadcasted in almost 100 countries worldwide. A historical journey through time documenting the extent to which the broadcast has changed over the years, "Prelude to the New Year's Concert", will be shown at 10:40 on ORF2. Once again there will be a New Year’s Concert newcomer: German conductor Christian Thielemann. His engagement at the New Year’s Concert has long been anticipated by the music world, having been connected musically to the Vienna Philharmonic since 2000 and having often conducted at the Vienna State Opera. As chief conductor of the Sächsischen Staatskapelle Orchestra, Christian Thielemann has performed many concerts in Austria, not least in Salzburg, where he has been artistic director of the Easter Festival since 2013. ’Kapellmeister’ Thielemann (who prefers not to be referred to as Maestro) is very familiar with the music of the Strauss dynasty and the world of operetta. Nevertheless, his interpretation of this music especially at the New Year’s Concert represents a new level of achievement for him.

GIUSEPPE FORTUNINO FRANCESCO VERDI 10 October 1813 - 27 January 1901 July 7, 2013 Dear Festival Visitors, Who could have possibly imagined that nine years ago, with the first sounds of Il barbiere di Seviglia in this historic venue, so many wonderful theater moments would have happened with thousands of performing artists from throughout the world! All in all, there have been more than 100 performances featuring symphony, oratorio, theater, ballet, jazz, and chamber music. The thrill of being in the center of the Aegean, performing these great masterworks with such wonderful world-class colleagues, is something which can only be dreamt of, something which rarely comes to reality. But this Festival, which is unique in Greece, has certainly become that for everyone involved. I wish to express my profound thanks to: Maestro Grigor Palikarov and the Pazardzhik Symphony Orchestra; the Greek National Opera and its Artistic Director, Myron Michailidis, for their continued cooperation in supplying costumes and props for the opera and ballet events; the Greek National Opera Ballet and Director Renato Zanella; the Hellenic Choir Association and Executive Director Thomas Louziotis; the Greek Opera 2 Studio and Artistic Director Eilana Lappalainen; and the vocal and instrumental soloists 3 from the National Opera House of Brussels and Conductor Dirk Boiy. This year is the 149th for the Apollo Theater since its opening on April 20, 1864, with a performance of Verdi’s classic and timeless masterpiece, RIGOLETTO, which was written by Verdi only 13 years earlier. Next year will be very special since, on July 6, 2014—almost 150 years to the day—we will present this masterpiece in this very same theater.
