In the closing paragraph of the article, Miller resists any easy categorizations of this new generation of writers and artists. After all, he remarks, “it’s such a big form, and such an endless field, that right now there’s no reason for any comics artist to be bound by any one definition.” The scholarship on this watershed moment in the history of U. S. comics, however, remains limited. If the artists of the period were not “bound by any one definition,” why keep telling the same story that Gilmore first outlined over three decades ago? We invite abstracts for essays that shift our focus to forgotten and neglected comics and graphic narratives of the 1980s published for the English-speaking market in North America and the UK. -

Marv looks like just a twisted, flat copy of Batman - the Batman Miller wanted to write, the Batman he's finally fully realized years later in Holy Terror: [Put a pointy cowl on the guy and give him a giant penny] Are there people in the world like Marv? During this time, a serial killer is on the loose in Sin City who preys on prostitutes and eats them. Marv is taking medications to keep his anger and his killing impulses under control, but his efforts to become a better person are sabotaged when he wakes up from a drunken stupor to find Goldie, his gorgeous one-night-stand, dead beside him. They approach Roark's home and confront him about the murders and his cannibalistic actions. Also, many people seem him as sexist, racist, and there may be some evidence for that. Introduction Covering female comics creators from the turn of the 20th century to present day, CBLDF Presents She Changed Comics: The Untold Story of the Women Who Changed Free Expression in Comics profiles more than 60 women who transformed the landscape of free expression and expanded the comics artform. It also examines the plights of women who have been persecuted for expressing themselves through cartoons and features interviews with some of the most influential women working in comics today. She Changed Comics was designed with educators and students in mind. The short profiles facilitate customization for classrooms: instructors can readily select material in She Changed Comics for sup- plemental and independent reading as suits their goals and pedagogical needs. For educators who use large portions of the volume, the material is readily parceled into more manageable portions. In turn, for those who choose to assign the entire book, it is organized to allow an understanding of how women have navigated and contributed to the medium over time. Common Core State Standard correlations, background information, discussion questions, and activity suggestions follow. Working from Kitchener, Ontario, Dave Sim writes, draws, and markets Cerebus, a highly successful black and white comic about an ambitious aardvark. When he began it in 1977, the comics world had dire warnings for him and for his then wife Deni Loubert (Cerebus's publisher): "We were told that we couldn't make it if we didn't go to New York" (Wawanash 31: 22). The overt threat implies that creative activity can only be successful in approved geo- graphical, financial and artistic surroundings. But Sim refused to accept that idea; as Gary Groth, editor of The comics journal, noted recently, "if Dave Sim at times seemingly operates out of an ivory tower, it should be remembered that he built it himself (Groth,"Repentant" 80). Discorporate Cerebus Sim's isolation is a key factor in the development of Cerebus. Remote from even the meagre support offered by the comics community, away from the corporate lap of above-ground American comics (Marvel and DC), away from under- ground comix (Zap, Weirdo), and even from ground-level comics publishers (Fantagraphics, Dark Horse, Tundra), Sim is one working in opposition to many. In 1984 he wrote, "You have to understand that doing a comic book for seven years with no one else assisting in the direction of it becomes a very intense kind of self-therapy" (Swords 6: 30). -
