Farel Dalrymple: On A Dark Horse He Rides "Farel Dalrymple is one of the finest young draftsmen to quietly sidle into comics in a long time. And one of the field's most gifted storytellers." -- Walter Simonson You probably don’t know who Farel Dalrymple is, and you’ve probably never heard of his thought- provoking, urban fantasy series, Pop Gun War either - but you soon will. In June, Dalrymple’s little War will be popping up on mainstream radar courtesy of Dark Horse Comics, where the talented creator will be publishing the trade paperback collection of the first five issues in his “daring and beautiful” series. Dalrymple, a Xeric Grant recipient, Society of Illustrators Gold medal winner and Russ Manning Award nominee, created his first self-published comic book, Smith's Adventures in the Supermundane, in 1999. Currently, he serves as an editor and contributor for the New York-based anthology series Meathaus, which will soon release its seventh collection, along with writing and illustrating Pop Gun War. Dalrymple recently took the time to talk with me about his Pop Gun War, the deal with Dark Horse, and why parties are more memorable with Evil Knievel action figures. MARKISAN NASO: The first 5 issues of Pop Gun War will be collected in June, but not by your current publisher, Absence of Ink. How did you hook up with Dark Horse and why did you choose to publish the first trade with them? FAREL DALRYMPLE: My first work with Dark Horse was an 8 page story I did in last year’s Dark Horse Maverick Annual Happy Endings.

  • Writing About Comics
NACAE National Association of Comics Art Educators English 100-v: Writing about Comics From the wild assertions of Unbreakable and the sudden popularity of films adapted from comics (not just Spider-Man or Daredevil, but Ghost World and From Hell), to the abrupt appearance of Dan Clowes and Art Spiegelman all over The New Yorker, interesting claims are now being made about the value of comics and comic books. Are they the visible articulation of some unconscious knowledge or desire -- No, probably not. Are they the new literature of the twenty-first century -- Possibly, possibly... This course offers a reading survey of the best comics of the past twenty years (sometimes called “graphic novels”), and supplies the skills for reading comics critically in terms not only of what they say (which is easy) but of how they say it (which takes some thinking). More importantly than the fact that comics will be touching off all of our conversations, however, this is a course in writing critically: in building an argument, in gathering and organizing literary evidence, and in capturing and retaining the reader's interest (and your own). Don't assume this will be easy, just because we're reading comics. We'll be working hard this semester, doing a lot of reading and plenty of writing. The good news is that it should all be interesting. The texts are all really good books, though you may find you don't like them all equally well. The essays, too, will be guided by your own interest in the texts, and by the end of the course you'll be exploring the unmapped territory of literary comics on your own, following your own nose.

H-Announce CFP: The Other 1980s: Reframing Comics' Crucial Decade (proposals due 1/31/2018) Announcement published by Brannon Costello on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 Type: Call for Papers Date: January 31, 2018 Subject Fields: Literature, Humanities, American History / Studies, Art, Art History & Visual Studies, Cultural History / Studies CFP: Edited Collection (Proposals due 1/31/2018) The Other 1980s: Reframing Comics’ Crucial Decade Editors: Brannon Costello and Brian Cremins Description: You know the story: it’s 1986 and publications including theNew York Times and Rolling Stone herald the newfound sophistication of a narrative form with its roots in the Depression. “In recent years,” writes Mikal Gilmore in a profile ofBatman: The Dark Knight creator Frank Miller, “the comic-book field has undergone perhaps the most wide-ranging and meaningful creative explosion of its fifty-year-plus history, spawning a new generation of storytellers who are among the more intriguing literary and graphic craftsmen of our day.” In addition to Miller, Gilmore praises the work of Howard Chaykin, the Hernandez Brothers, Alan Moore, and Art Spiegelman. In the closing paragraph of the article, Miller resists any easy categorizations of this new generation of writers and artists. After all, he remarks, “it’s such a big form, and such an endless field, that right now there’s no reason for any comics artist to be bound by any one definition.” The scholarship on this watershed moment in the history of U. S. comics, however, remains limited. If the artists of the period were not “bound by any one definition,” why keep telling the same story that Gilmore first outlined over three decades ago? We invite abstracts for essays that shift our focus to forgotten and neglected comics and graphic narratives of the 1980s published for the English-speaking market in North America and the UK.
