  • Sandman, Aesthetics and Canonisation Today I Want To
Sandman, Aesthetics and Canonisation Today I want to examine the ways in which Neil Gaiman’s Sandman has used narrative, format and aesthetic to move ever closer to the notion of the literary text. Particularly going to consider how it exploits the author function and enacts the struggle for cultural worth that comics seem consistently engaged in. Sandman is an epic series rewriting a golden-age superhero into an immortal deity. It is best remembered for its mythological content and literary references, and these elements have allowed it to claim its place as a canonised graphic novel (despite not actually being a singular GN but a maxi-series across multiple trade paperbacks!). Neil Gaiman’s authorship and authority dominate the text and epitomise Michel Foucault’s author function. But Sandman also draws heavily on mixed media and artistic variation and these aspects are less often discussed. Far from supporting a singular author function, Sandman’s visual style is multiple and varied. But despite this, in paratexts the artistic contributions are frequently subsumed into Gaiman’s authorship. However, a closer reading demonstrates that in fact this artistic variety destabilises clear-cut authorship and enacts the particular status struggles of comics as a collaborative medium struggling against the graphic novel branding. SLIDE: literary pix Sandman was launched in 1989 and became the flagship title for DC’s new Vertigo imprint. Vertigo’s publications contributed heavily to the mainstream cultural revaluation of comics as graphic novels, and critics such as Candace West have argued that Sandman in particular was instrumental here due to the attention the series received from mainstream media such as Rolling Stone magazine.

Empirical Comics Research: Digital, Multimodal, and Cognitive Methods (27-42). Routledge, 2018. 1 “One of the most significant effects of the transformations undergone by the different genres is the transformation of their transformation-time. The model of permanent revolution which was valid for poetry tends to extend to the novel and even the theatre […], so that these two genres are also structured by the fundamental opposition between the sub-field of “mass production” and the endlessly changing sub-field of restricted production. It follows that the opposition between the genres tends to decline, as there develops within each of them an “autonomous” sub- field, springing from the opposition between a field of restricted production and a field of mass production.” - Pierre Bourdieu, “The Field of Cultural Production” 1. Introduction Although it is asserted more strongly that it is demonstrated in his writing, Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of a “transformation of transformation-time” fruitfully points to an understanding of cultural change that seems both commonsensical and highly elusive. In the field of comic books, it is almost intuitively logical to suggest that there are stylistic, narrative, and generic conventions that are more closely tied to historical periodization than to the particularities of individual creators, titles, or publishers.

  • Reframing Comics' Crucial Decade (Proposals Due 1/31/2018)
H-Announce CFP: The Other 1980s: Reframing Comics' Crucial Decade (proposals due 1/31/2018) Announcement published by Brannon Costello on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 Type: Call for Papers Date: January 31, 2018 Subject Fields: Literature, Humanities, American History / Studies, Art, Art History & Visual Studies, Cultural History / Studies CFP: Edited Collection (Proposals due 1/31/2018) The Other 1980s: Reframing Comics’ Crucial Decade Editors: Brannon Costello and Brian Cremins Description: You know the story: it’s 1986 and publications including theNew York Times and Rolling Stone herald the newfound sophistication of a narrative form with its roots in the Depression. “In recent years,” writes Mikal Gilmore in a profile ofBatman: The Dark Knight creator Frank Miller, “the comic-book field has undergone perhaps the most wide-ranging and meaningful creative explosion of its fifty-year-plus history, spawning a new generation of storytellers who are among the more intriguing literary and graphic craftsmen of our day.” In addition to Miller, Gilmore praises the work of Howard Chaykin, the Hernandez Brothers, Alan Moore, and Art Spiegelman. In the closing paragraph of the article, Miller resists any easy categorizations of this new generation of writers and artists. After all, he remarks, “it’s such a big form, and such an endless field, that right now there’s no reason for any comics artist to be bound by any one definition.” The scholarship on this watershed moment in the history of U. S. comics, however, remains limited. If the artists of the period were not “bound by any one definition,” why keep telling the same story that Gilmore first outlined over three decades ago? We invite abstracts for essays that shift our focus to forgotten and neglected comics and graphic narratives of the 1980s published for the English-speaking market in North America and the UK.
