PRESENTED BY: Frances Ramona Pantig Joyce Cristene Marquez Fatima Munoz Bianca Monique Bargas Fundamentals of Music 1 Fundamentals of Music 2 Filipinos are said to be Musical Peoples. In most cases, singing is accompanied by dancing. They used Bamboo canes, Palm leaves and bark of trees to write their songs and a piece of sharp stick or iron for their pen. • Kontekstuwalisasyon Ng Piling Awiting Post-EDSA David Michael San Juan
Mga Susing Salita: Awiting Filipino, EDSA, People Power, Marxismo, Kasaysayang-bayan The EDSA People Power I that ousted the Marcos dictatorship led to the production of a number of songs giving various perspectives on the so-called “peaceful revolution.” Utilizing Howard Zinn’s and Teresita Maceda’s concepts about people’s history, this paper scrutinized the world phenomenon of songs that reflect people’s history so as to contextualize class contradictions in three post-Edsa songs (“Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo”/“The Filipinos’ Offering to the World”, “Sayaw sa Bubog”/“Dance on Shards” and “Kumusta Na”/“How Are You?”).

  • The New Manila Sound: Music and Mass Culture, 1990S and Beyond James Gabrillo
The New Manila Sound: Music and Mass Culture, 1990s and Beyond A dissertation submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music James Gabrillo Peterhouse, University of Cambridge November 2018 This dissertation is the result of my own work and includes nothing which is the outcome of work done in collaboration. I further state that no substantial part of my dissertation has already been submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for any such degree, diploma or other quali- fication at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution. It does not exceed the word limit prescribed by the Degree Committee. "2 of 293" The New Manila Sound: Music and Mass Culture, 1990s and Beyond James Gabrillo Abstract This dissertation provides the first detailed account of the mass musical culture of the Philippines that originated in the 1990s and continues to be the most popular style of musical entertainment in the country — a scene I dub the New Manila Sound. Through a combination of archival research, musical analysis, and ethnographic fieldwork, my ex- amination focuses on its two major pioneers: the musical television programme Eat Bula- ga! (Lunchtime Surprise) and the pop-rock band Aegis. I document the scene’s rise and development as it attracted mostly consumers from the lower classes and influenced oth- er programmes and musicians to adapt its content and aesthetics. The scene’s trademark kitsch qualities of parody, humour, and exaggeration served as forms of diversion to au- diences recovering from the turbulent dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos from 1965 to 1986, when musical works primarily comprised of state-commissioned nationalist an- thems, Western art music, and protest songs.

PADAYON SINING: A CELEBRATION OF THE ENDURING VALUE OF THE HUMANITIES Presented at the 12th DLSU Arts Congress De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines February 20, 21 and 22, 2019 Protest Songs in EDSA 1: Decoding the People’s Dream of an Unfinished Revolution Marlon S. Delupio, Ph.D. History Department De La Salle University [email protected] Abstract: “Twenty-six years after Edsa I, also called the 1986 People Power Revolution, exactly what has changed? People old enough to remember ask the question with a feeling of frustration, while those who are too young find it hard to relate to an event too remote in time.” (Philippine Daily Inquirer, 25 of February 2012, 12) The People Power-1 Revolution (also known as EDSA Revolution of 1986 or the Yellow Revolution) was a series of mass demonstrations in the Philippines that took place from February 22-25, 1986. The nonviolent revolution led to the overthrow of then President Ferdinand Marcos that would eventually end his 21-year totalitarian rule and the restoration of democracy in the country. The quote cited above generally represent the sentiment of the people in celebrating EDSA-1 yearly, such feelings of frustration, hopelessness, indifference, and even a question of relevance, eroded the once glorified and momentous event in Philippine history. The paper aims to provide a historical discussion through textual analysis on the People Power-1 Revolution using as lens the three well known protest songs during that time namely: Bayan Ko, Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo and Magkaisa. Protest songs are associated with a social movement of which the primary aim is to achieve socio-political change and transformation.
