Ethnomusicology Archive Los Angeles, California 90095-1490 Abstract: Archiving Filipino American Music in Los Angeles (AFAMILA) was as a yearlong archiving and documentation project carried out by the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive and Kayamanan Ng Lahi Folk Dance. Support for the project was provided by a UCLA in LA grant from the UCLA Center for Community Partnerships. AFAMILA began in July 2003 and ended in June 2004. During that time a collection of over 200 audiovisual recordings documenting Filipino-American expressive culture in LA was established at the Archive. Previously existing collections of Filipino and Filipino American materials were accessioned into AFAMILA between July 2003 and June 2004. Physical location: Access copies for many of the materials are available in the Ethnomusicology Archive. Masters are stored at SRLF. Language of Material: Collection materials in English Access Archive materials may be accessed in the Archive. Acquisition Information The AFAMILA Collection was compiled and deposited into the Archive by community members and Ethnomusicology Archive staff between August 2003 and July 2004. Biography This year-long UCLA in LA funded community partnership had four main objectives: 1) expanding the Archive's Filipino collections; 2) increasing access to recordings already held by UCLA and the community; 3) producing a list of Filipino sound recordings, audiovisual recordings, and other resources that are currently a part of the Archive's holding; and 4) hosting an end-of-the-project symposium at UCLA. Scope and Content This collection consists of unpublished and published sounds recordings, photographs, video recordings, and paper materials collected as part of Archiving Filipino Music in Los Angeles (AFAMILA). The AFAMILA Collection documents a variety of Filipino American musics and performances, from traditional kulingtang to contemporary pop, and from religious ritual to comedic parody. It examines dance rehearsals as a site for ethnographic research. Metaphors of birth, growth, life, immigration, struggle, failures, resilience, and hope will be manifested and expressed. The output of this research is a dance film. Titled In Flight, it critically responds to themes of isolation, limited movements, the precarity of flight, restricted travel, acts of transferring from one place to another, and the ways in which dance artists adapt to quarantined movements of life. Its aim is to identify an increased knowledge of natural movement of the avian species paralleled or in discussion with how humans translate the naturally occurring movements of birds into human expressions and dances.     Music in The Heart of Manila: Quiapo from the Colonial Period to Contemporary Times: Tradition, Change, Continuity Ma. Patricia Brillantes-Silvestre A brief history of Quiapo Quiapo is a key district of Manila, having as its boundaries the winding Pasig River and the districts of Sta. Cruz, San Miguel and Sampaloc. Its name comes from a floating water lily specie called kiyapo (Pistia stratiotes), with thick, light-green leaves, similar to a tiny, open cabbage. Pre-1800 maps of Manila show Quiapo as originally a cluster of islands with swampy lands and shallow waters (Andrade 2006, 40 in Zialcita), the perfect breeding place for the plant that gave its name to the district. Quiapo’s recorded history began in 1578 with the arrival of the Franciscans who established their main missionary headquarters in nearby Sta. Ana (Andrade 42), taking Quiapo, then a poor fishing village, into its sheepfold. They founded Quiapo Church and declared its parish as that of St. John the Baptist. The Jesuits arrived in 1581, and the discalced Augustinians in 1622 founded a chapel in honor of San Sebastian, at the site where the present Gothic-style basilica now stands. At about this time there were around 30,000 Chinese living in Manila and its surrounding areas, but the number swiftly increased due to the galleon trade, which brought in Mexican currency in exchange for Chinese silk and other products (Wickberg 1965). The Chinese, noted for their business acumen, had begun to settle in the district when Manila’s business center shifted there in the early 1900s (originally from the Parian/Chinese ghetto beside Intramuros in the 1500s, to Binondo in the 1850s, to Sta.Cruz at the turn of the century).

    Creative Arts Educ Ther (2017) 3(2):47–59 DOI: 10.15212/CAET/2017/3/6 Rising After the Storm: Interweaving Indigenous Philippine Dance and Music and Western Classical Music for Recovery and Wellbeing 暴风雨后的崛起:交织菲律宾本土舞蹈、音乐和西方古典音乐 以期康复和健康 Gina Alfonso Cartwheel Foundation, Philippines Abstract Long-term recovery programs for the survivors of typhoon Haiyan – as it struck the Philippines in 2013 – were inevitably characterized by a convergence of Eastern and Western approaches to health and wellness due to the sectors involved in the process. Local community volunteers and local/international non-profit organizations joined forces to offer socio-emotional support to over 100 families of Tagbanua heritage on three islands in the area of Culion, Palawan, Philippines. This paper presents the blending of Eastern and Western perspectives on post-traumatic symp- toms, on well-being and on the human condition. The combined spirit of compassion and bayani- han (a Filipino term for togetherness in common effort) shared by the relief workers and the Tagbanua is also described. Narratives about the unexpected discovery of inherent indigenous ways of coping through dance – and a therapeutic encounter that involved a dialogue between Tagbanua and Western classical music – are highlighted as examples of the interweaving of art- based healing practices from the East and West which contributed towards recovery and the restoration of health. But more than a love song, it is an art song where many great Filipino musicians have composed in that genre such as Nicanor Abelardo and Francisco Santiago, among others. The songs speak not only of love of a man for a woman, but more than that, is a song that elicits national fervor; love for the motherland. The original structure since its inception is closely related to the kumintang: a rhythmic pattern that has its roots in Spanish music. In time, the form has been watered down and since then became known as a love song, and very few works have been made. This paper aims to trace the Kundiman that appeared in different media formats such as recordings, both in the vinyl disc and extant 78 rpm shellac records; on the radio and the Television, and in the films as theme songs or musical renditions. A discography of the Kundiman songs that was written and performed for the media, is of primary importance.

Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. By analyzing acoustic markers of Irishness, for example an Irish accent, as well as markers of other musical traditions, this study aims explores the different ways that the song has been performed and discusses the possible presence of an “Irish feel” on recordings that do not sound overtly Irish. ii Dedication Dedicated to my grandfather, Edward Blake, for instilling in our family a love of Irish music and a pride in our heritage iii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my advisor, Graeme Boone, for showing great and enthusiasm for this project and for offering advice and support throughout the process.
