Phylogenetic Relationships and Distribution of the Rhizotrogini (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Melolonthinae) in the West Mediterranean
Graellsia, 59(2-3): 443-455 (2003) PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE RHIZOTROGINI (COLEOPTERA, SCARABAEIDAE, MELOLONTHINAE) IN THE WEST MEDITERRANEAN Mª. M. Coca-Abia* ABSTRACT In this paper, the West Mediterranean genera of Rhizotrogini are reviewed. Two kinds of character sets are discussed: those relative to the external morphology of the adult and those of the male and female genitalia. Genera Amadotrogus Reitter, 1902; Amphimallina Reitter, 1905; Amphimallon Berthold, 1827; Geotrogus Guérin-Méneville, 1842; Monotropus Erichson, 1847; Pseudoapeterogyna Escalera, 1914 and Rhizotrogus Berthold, 1827 are analysed: to demonstrate the monophyly of this group of genera; to asses the realtionships of these taxa; to test species transferred from Rhizotrogus to Geotrogus and Monotropus, and to describe external morphological and male and female genitalic cha- racters which distinguish each genus. Phylogenetic analysis leads to the conclusion that this group of genera is monophyletic. However, nothing can be said about internal relationships of the genera, which remain in a basal polytomy. Some of the species tranferred from Rhizotrogus are considered to be a new genus Firminus. The genera Amphimallina and Pseudoapterogyna are synonymized with Amphimallon and Geotrogus respectively. Key words: Taxonomy, nomenclature, review, Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Melolonthinae, Rhizotrogini, Amadotrogus, Amphimallon, Rhizotrogus, Geotrogus, Pseudoapterogyna, Firminus, Mediterranean basin. Studii şi Comunicări, Compl. Muz. Şt. Nat. „Ion Borcea” Bacău, vol. 21: 274-279. For studying the crepuscular and nocturnal scarabeoid fauna from the meadow of Siret River area, the author analyzed 323 scarab beetles. The insects were collected in 2004-2006, with the help of a lighting trap. Systematically speaking, the 323 specimens belong to 4 families, 6 subfamilies: Geotrupidae (Bolboceratinae, Geotrupinae), Ochodaeidae (Ochodaeinae), Trogidae, Scarabaeidae (Scarabaeinae, Aphodiinae, Melolonthinae), 14 genera and 19 species. According to the sinecological analyze realized for the 19 species collected in this area, Oxyomus sylvestris Scop., Melolontha melolontha L. and Aphodius (Acanthobodilus) immundus Creutzer are the eudominant species; Geotrupes spiniger Marsh. is the only dominant species. For the studied area, Oxyomus sylvestris Scop., Melolontha melolontha L., Aphodius (Acanthobodilus) immundus Creutzer, Geotrupes spiniger Marsh. and Pleurophorus caesus Creutzer are the characteristic species. The other 14 species are accessories. Studying the cenotic affinities between the species, the results indicate that the highest affinity is between Copris lunaris L. and Pleurophorus caesus Creutzer – 96%. Other groups of species are represented by: Ochodaeus chrysomeloides Schrank – Odontaeus armiger Scop. (92%); Aphodius (Acanthobodilus) immundus Creutzer – Geotrupes spiniger Marsh. (89%); Aphodius (Calamosternus) granarius L. -

The research was conducted on 5 June 2012 in the Botanic Garden of Oles Gonchar University (previously – territory of the Park Y. Gagarin, Dnipropetrovsk). The studied plot is situated on the slope of the Krasnopostachekaya balka (48°25'57.43" N, 35°2'16.52" E). The plot consists of 15 transects directed in a perpendicular manner in relation to the talweg. Each transect is made of seven sample points. The distance between points is 2 m. The coordinates of the lower left point were taken as (0; 0). The plot consisted of artificial grassland with a single tree. The vegetation was composed of grassland and steppe, of a mega-mesotrophic, xeromesophilic character. At each point the mesopedobionts were studied (data presented as L-table); temperature, electrical conductivity and soil penetration resistance, and grass height were measured (data presented as R-table). The soil-zoological test area was 25 × 25 cm. -

Palabras clave: Coleoptera, Melolonthini, Península Ibérica. Interesting records of Iberian Melolonthini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) Abstract: New records of two Iberian endemic Melolonthini (Coleoptera). Key words: Coleoptera, Melolonthini, Iberian Peninsula.
