Ivery Date: June 20, 2003 Once again, the annual Commencement ceremony held on June 7th proved to be successful and we have received numerous compliments on the event. During my tenure, this was the largest marching class, with approximately 650 graduates participating in addition to more than 340 faculty and staff members. As you know, this was our first attempt at holding the ceremony on Saturday and we feel that it worked very well. As a result, we plan to stay with that format. The reception that followed provided an opportunity for the speaker, State Senator Raymond Basham, to interact with faculty and staff. On behalf of the District, our sincere congratulations to the Standing Committee on Ceremonies and Rituals and the Commencement Task Force for putting together another fine event. The Eastern Campus received the following statement this week and I thought I would share it with you: “Congratulations, you are now the newest member of the VUE Testing Center family. We are committed to proving to you that your confidence was well placed. Knowing you have a vested interest in this partnership, we will keep you informed of our progress with new testing sponsors, and any new developments with our software. We doubled enrollment in the Red Cross Babysitter Certification. Two instructors from the Red Cross were needed to service the students. • On Wednesday evening, the Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber of Commerce honored Dr. Randall Miller for completing their multi-faceted leadership training program designed to familiarize participants with business, health care, government, and education in the Downriver Region. This Leadership 21 graduation ceremony was conducted on the site of the long-time partner in the program, the University of Michigan-Dearborn, at their Henry Ford Estate facility. Educational Affairs- Dr. Joann Pieronek, Vice Chancellor • On Friday, Dorothy Eaton and Michael Rich-Bey attended an Adult Education Professional Development workshop coordinated by Michigan Department Career Development (MDCD). • Also on Friday, John Bolden attended a Schools for the 21st Century meeting to explore the feasibility of a collaboration among organizations to provide training for parents and children. Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division- Dr. Mary Smith, Vice Chancellor • On Monday, Johann Buckner, Barbara Morris and Sandra Steward attended the Administrative Assistants Conference. Highlights of the seminar included improving organizational skills and how to manage multiple projects. • Also on Monday, Kebina Young was the guest speaker at the promotion ceremony for the 8th grade graduating class of Catherine C. Blackwell Institute. • On Tuesday, Dr. Smith met with representatives from MDCD to review the reporting requirements of state data. Staff from Information Technology, Finance and Academic departments also attended. • On Wednesday and Thursday, Dr. Smith and James Robinson visited St. Louis Community College, the Meramec Campus which is a multi-campus district. They met with staff in Workforce Development and Continuing Education and community service departments to look at best practices. • On Friday, Dr. Smith met with Addie Morrow and Jacqueline Hughes, representatives from Schools of the 21st Century, regarding a partnership to promote literacy in our community. • Also on Friday, Dr. Mary Smith attended a reception honoring Namibia's Ambassador, Minister Hamutenya. 3 • This week, Susan Wiley attended the annual International Association of Administrative Professionals seminar in New Orleans. Highlights of the seminar included identifying fads, trends and principles in this age of information, knowledge, communication and technology. Government Relations- Jonathan Cartwright, Director • On Tuesday, Jonathan Cartwright and Michigan State Representative Artina Tinsley Hardman hosted an organizational breakfast for “Women of Vision -Sisters Overcoming Struggles.” A seminar is tentatively scheduled for August. Dr. Mary Smith, Kebina Young and Jonathan Powell also attended. • Also on Tuesday, Lisa Jackson hosted the “Education First” radio show with guest Gerald Wade, Director of the S.T.E.P.S program for the City of Detroit, which assists teens in making the right decision about peer pressure. • On Wednesday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Waynette Sims and Len Horan of Impact Magazine to discuss community and educational issues. • On Thursday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Emma Bell, former Director of Public Affairs for the Wayne County Commissioners concerning upcoming projects in the community. Downtown Campus- Dr. Jacqueline Hodges, Campus President • On Tuesday, a Global Education meeting was held for students who will be traveling to Ghana in July. Students were encouraged to learn more about their host country. A discussion was held on customs and cultural differences. • On Thursday, students from the Psychology 385 class departed for Brazil to complete their study abroad experience for the summer. Downriver Campus- Dr. Nick Fleezanis, Interim Campus President • On Monday, Dr. Fleezanis met with Michigan State Representative Hoon-Yung Hopgood to discuss community issues. • Also on Monday, Dr. Fleezanis attended the Southern Great Lakes Symphony Board of Directors Meeting. • On Wednesday, George Anthony met with Linda Lovchuk, Police Academy Director at Kellogg Community College, and John Steele, Field Supervisor for the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). Discussion focused on the standards required for the orientation of police academy applicants. 4 • Also on Wednesday, Ethel Cronk, Robert Palmer, Corrie Morris, Jonathan Cartwright and Kebina Young met with representatives of WOMC, WYCD, WNIC and Comcast to discuss and confirm sponsorship opportunities related to the Summer Auto Spectacular scheduled for August at the Downriver Campus. • On Thursday, Dr. Fleezanis spoke with a representative of Kia Motors of American concerning the use of our automotive facility for training Kia automotive repair personnel. • On Friday, Ethel Cronk, Dr. Debraha Watson and Unbreen Amir met with Bill Musham of Romulus Community Schools to discuss transfer opportunities for engineering students. • This week, Andy Steeby, Larry Morabito and Matt Green attended the Fire Expo in Grand Rapids. Eastern Campus- Dr. George Swan, Campus President • On Monday, Lorraine Colts, Pamela Broaden and Dr. Karen Brantley conducted a presentation with Hamtramck Public School personnel who will be enrolled in the Urban Teacher Program (UTP) for the fall. To meet "No Child Left Behind" guidelines, the participants must complete the associate degree program by January 1, 2006. As a result of the meeting, admissions application and COMPASS testing will be completed by July 14. • On Tuesday, Dr. Swan met with Dr. Richard Pappas, President of Lake Michigan Community College, regarding an upcoming Customer Service Project to be held at the Eastern Campus. • Also on Tuesday, Dr. Swan attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the Mack Alter Square Project. The venture involves an 8 acre development site which will serve as an “entry way” into Detroit featuring a retail and commercial development. This is in conjunction with a 1200 acre residential area. • On Wednesday, Dr. Brantley met with Doreen Turk White, Executive Director of the, Empowerment Zone Coalition, to discuss a community partnership regarding recruitment and human services, with a focus on their grant in substance and addiction abuse. Northwest Campus- Dr. Hattie Johnson-Norris, Campus President • On Monday, Dr. Johnson-Norris attended the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences, Science and Technology Career and Education Day. • On Wednesday, Dr. Johnson-Norris, Dr. LaVerne Thompson, Diane Gonzalez and Brenda Jones met separately with Vanessa Spencer, Director of Breithaupt Vocational 5 Technical Center and Linda Spight, Principal of Mumford High School, to discuss Detroit Public Schools-WCCCD Northwest Campus partnerships. • This week, the Northwest Campus hosted graduation ceremonies for World of Wonders Child Care, Ludington Middle School and Charles Rogers Academy. • This week, Dr. Thompson attended the Summer Institute for the Consortium for Community College Development in Denver, Colorado. Community college issues related to pedagogical excellence and institutional effectiveness were discussed. Western Campus- Dr. Marjorie Oliver, Campus President • On Tuesday, Dr. Oliver conducted the installation of officers at the Belleville Rotary Club. This was the 65th installation. Ralph Nodwell, a member of the Western Campus Advisory Committee, was installed as President. This marks the end of Dr. Oliver's term as Rotary Club President. ********** .
