43Rd EMMY AWARDS The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Michigan Chapter 43rd EMMY ® AWARDS June 19, 2021 WELCOME TO THE 43RD ANNUAL REGIONAL EMMY® AWARDS Presented by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Michigan Chapter President's Welcome In the past year, news teams covered some of the most historic stories we will see in our lifetime; A global pandemic resulting in a loss of nearly 600,000 people in this country and divisive debates about mask wearing and vaccines. We saw race riots, protests and demonstrations; and covered an election that has polarized this country, ending in an insurrection at the US Capitol. You had to cover these stories while trying to stay safe and healthy, along with increasing anger and distrust of the media. It hasn’t been easy. YET, viewers tuned in…sometimes in record numbers, because you provided the information they needed to be informed. You told the stories that mattered and touched lives. You helped us navigate where to get tested or how to sign up for the vaccine. You provided non-stop updates on the presidential election with truth and facts, during some very tenuous days. It was challenging for production and sports too as crews were out of work for a while. However, as sports came back, it created a whirlwind of logistics to cover all the games, ensuring that fans could experience their favorite sport from home. And for those that produce entertainment, you gave us original content to help us escape from reality for a little bit. You didn’t give up. You understood your calling as an industry professional. You proved that, through adversity, you not only produced content that was important to the commu- nity, but you produced award-worthy programs. And that is what this Emmy Awards is all about. While it’s more fun to celebrate in-per- son, it does not diminish the honor. Winning or being nominated for an Emmy® Award is a humbling experience. I want to congratulate all of those on that list this year. Perhaps this year, more than others, it will have a deeper meaning after a year we won’t soon forget. So today, let’s take some time to celebrate excellence. And now, as my presidential term is coming to an end after 4 years, I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve this great organization. It has been an honor and privilege to represent the Michigan Emmy Chapter. Bob Gould President, Michigan Emmy®Chapter Vice President of Awards Good Evening and welcome! On behalf of the Board of Governors and the Emmy® Committee, we would like to welcome you to the 43rd Michigan Regional Emmy® Awards. Tonight we are celebrating excellence in television. Of course, this is not how we hoped to celebrate and honor all of you, but our priority is recognizing a great year of creative content in Michigan television and keeping everyone safe. This year we received 593submissions, 537nominees in 87 categories and our entries were judged by Nashville/Mid-South, Mid-America, Northwest, Southeast and Suncoast chapters. I would like to thank the Emmy® Committee for all of their assistance in making this night a memorable one. Congratulations to all the nominees and recipients! So proud to be a part of this incredible community. Robin A. Tracey Alan C. Young & Associates, P.C. On weeknights, she is the anchors at 6:30 p.m. with Roop Raj and The Edge at 11 p.m. with Huel Perkins. Asher graduated from Michigan State, earning a degree in journalism and political science. After a stint as an anchor/reporter at Lansing's CBS station, she moved on to ABC12 in Flint. Bryan Bachman, Metorologist, WNEM Bryan Bachman joined WNEM's First Warn 5 Weather Team in April 2014 and was named Chief Meteorologist in February 2015. He holds the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation from the American Meteorologi- cal Society. Before coming to Michigan, Bachman worked as a meteorologist at WTEN-TV in Albany, NY, and provided freelance work for the News12 Networks in New York's Tri-State area. From his childhood home in New Jersey, he was on the front lines for plenty of significant weather events. Storms like the Blizzard of 1996, Tropical Storm Floyd, and the Presi- dent's Day Blizzard of 2003 fueled Bachman's passion for weather more over the years. He ultimately took that passion to Rutgers University, where he earned a B.S. Degree in Meteorology. Carolyn Clifford, Anchor, WXYZ Carolyn Clifford is a 17-time Emmy Award-winning journalist who anchors the 4, 6, and 11 p.m. newscasts. Clifford is a proud graduate of Michigan State University, earning a degree in Broadcast Journalism. She also learned mental toughness from spending time in MSU's Army ROTC. She came to WXYZ-TV from WPGH-TV in Pittsburgh, PA, where she anchored the 10 p.m. newscast. Before that, she anchored the 10 p.m. news at WLFL-TV in Raleigh, NC. Clifford also worked at the CBS affiliates in Orlando, FL, and Lansing, MI, but got her actual start in news at a small radio station in Lansing. David Custer, Anchor, WNEM David Custer is a highly decorated journalist, having won five regional Emmy Awards from 11 nominations. You can catch David every week- night anchoring WNEM-TV5 News at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 10 p.m., and 11 p.m. His journey in television began as a news anchor in Alpena, Michigan, in 2002. He moved to Flint to take a job at a competing station as a reporter and a producer. He quickly climbed that ladder and was promoted to weekend anchor before the station merged with WNEM-TV5. He was asked to stay and transitioned to weekend morning an- chor for WNEM-TV5 until the summer of 2007. Then, a job offer in Toledo pulled Custer across the border where he was the main anchor at the NBC affiliate. Custer is a proud graduate of the University of Michigan-Flint. Josh Landon Anchor, WJBK Josh Landon started working in Lansing, Michigan as a reporter. From there, he worked in Florida, Virginia, Wisconsin before landing a job in Michigan. He had been gone for eight years before the wonderful opportunity to work at FOX 2 came his way. Local TV news has been in Landon since he was a kid. His mother used to make him watch the local news when he was growing up in De- troit.
