February 2020 Issue School Newspaper Options Advice Matthew Thompson & Ro Bartram For the Year 9’s, the time has come for them to choose their GCSE’s. This is the first time you can make a choice about your education and it is important that you make these choices wisely as to not waste the next two years. If you are lucky enough to have a career focus already, this is a great opportunity to pick the GCSE options which best suit this and invest your time and effort into that. On the other hand, if you are clueless in regards to your career, all hope is not lost, as even A-level students do not yet know where they will go next. During GCSE’s it is recommended that you pick at least two that you enjoy, as it will become increasingly harder to motivate yourself if you pick options which you quite frankly couldn't care less about. You mustn’t let others influence what subjects you pick. Not your teachers, not your friends and not your parents. THIS IS ABOUT YOU. To stop you from picking subjects based purely on what the teachers say to you, talk to the older years about what the subjects entail as they will have the experience and be able to tell you unbiased accounts of what they are like. We are more than happy to give the insight that we wish we had from older years when we were at this stage. If disaster strikes and the blocks do not allow you to take the options you want, there are still ways around this. -

Perhaps now it’s time to take up motoring, instead. ii ABSTRACT Certain classic children’s stories have transcended the generations to become cultural icons over a century after their publication. The endless adaptation and reinvention that creates iconography can be both assistance and obstruction to the preservation of authored stories which, unlike classic oral folk tales, were originally composed to a specific and unchanging design. This thesis examines how certain classic stories – Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen,” Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows, and Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass – have been transmuted from set, authored texts to collections of representative elements with wide cultural applications. -

Annotation This thesis is devoted to the lexico-semantic features of Cockney dialect and slang in selected British films and TV series. The theoretical part focuses on the description of Cockney dialect and slang in general and it thoroughly describes three main lexico-semantic features of Cockney, namely general vocabulary of Cockney slang, rhyming slang and back slang. The analytical part studies the meanings, usage and connotations of the aforementioned features in regard to the situational context of the films and TV series. -

TRINITY 18 2020 (Year A) – Matthew 22: 1-14; Philippians 4: 1-9 – ‘Clothed in Christ’ Preacher: Reverend Jane Quinton Curate So have you ever turned up somewhere under-dressed, over-dressed, or even totally wrongly dressed….? I am reminded of the episode from ‘Only Fools and Horses’ where Del boy and Rodney are invited to a fancy dress party for landlord Harry Malcolm, an occasion for which Del boy purchases a Batman and Robin outfit for them – however, on the evening of the party they arrive, bursting through the door and singing the Batman theme, only to find that everyone else is dressed in black mourning clothes and looking very sombre – unfortunately Harry has actually died the day before and so the party has become a wake instead! Now other than just wanting to provide a vivid image of someone being dressed in inappropriate clothing, there is no other similarity between this example from Only Fools and Horses and the parable that Jesus tells in Matthew’s gospel. Or the second part of the parable anyway – because this is in fact a parable of 2 halves! (Or the amalgamation of 2 parables as is commonly thought). The parable’s main theme centres on a great wedding feast being held by a king for his son, (the King of course representing God, and Jesus His son.) The first half of the parable concentrates on those who are invited to this feast, whilst the second half focusses on the clothing required in order to be able to remain and enjoy the feast. -

Exemplary of this movement is the self-proclaimed ‘art terrorist’, Banksy, who has earned a reputation recently for his audacious interventions into some of the most significant art institutions in the western world, as well as for his politically charged stencil and sculptural work in the everyday spaces of the city. We’re pleased to be joined by Harry Whalley, who has a PhD in Composition from the University of Edinburgh and is currently a course leader in Music Composition and Technology at the University for the Creative Arts. Harry we like to start the podcast with a little bit of background on yourself, your journey and how you got to where you are and some details about your research as if you’re at a dinner party explaining what you do. HW I started with a background in jazz played by ear and played a lot of funk and jazz and blues as a teenager and then that lead me to study Jazz at Middlesex University where I was very lucky to have Malcom Edmiston as a lecturer in Composition and that’s where I really realised that composing and arranging music was what I loved best. I taught in a school for a little while and then met Nigel Osborne who is a really interesting composer and a bit of a polymath at a conference to do with the holy grail of all things. -
