  • Options Advice Matthew Thompson & Ro Bartram
February 2020 Issue School Newspaper Options Advice Matthew Thompson & Ro Bartram For the Year 9’s, the time has come for them to choose their GCSE’s. This is the first time you can make a choice about your education and it is important that you make these choices wisely as to not waste the next two years. If you are lucky enough to have a career focus already, this is a great opportunity to pick the GCSE options which best suit this and invest your time and effort into that. On the other hand, if you are clueless in regards to your career, all hope is not lost, as even A-level students do not yet know where they will go next. During GCSE’s it is recommended that you pick at least two that you enjoy, as it will become increasingly harder to motivate yourself if you pick options which you quite frankly couldn't care less about. You mustn’t let others influence what subjects you pick. Not your teachers, not your friends and not your parents. THIS IS ABOUT YOU. To stop you from picking subjects based purely on what the teachers say to you, talk to the older years about what the subjects entail as they will have the experience and be able to tell you unbiased accounts of what they are like. We are more than happy to give the insight that we wish we had from older years when we were at this stage. If disaster strikes and the blocks do not allow you to take the options you want, there are still ways around this.

Averse as Sir Arthur is to the " interview " in journalism, I could not resist the temptation to ask him to let me do something of the sort when I first had the pleasure of meeting ^ him — not in regard to journalistic matters — some years ago. That permission was most genially , granted, and the little chat which I had with J him then, in regard to the opera which he was writing, appeared in The World. Subsequent conversations which I was privileged to have with Sir Arthur, and the fact that there was nothing procurable in book form concerning our greatest and most popular composer — save an interesting little monograph which formed part of a small volume published some years ago on English viii PREFACE Musicians by Mr.

  • How Authored Children's Classics Retain Cultural
A PICTURE VS. A THOUSAND WORDS: HOW AUTHORED CHILDREN’S CLASSICS RETAIN CULTURAL RELEVANCY THROUGH BRITISH TELEVISION ADAPTATIONS by Sarah K. Crotzer A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in English Thesis Committee: Dr. Jennifer Marchant, Chair Dr. Martha Hixon Dr. Tom Strawman ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would not have completed this thesis without the support and assistance of a great many people. Drs. Jennifer Marchant and Martha Hixon were the best mentors I could have asked for: enthusiastic when I needed a push, patient when I asked a thousand questions at once, and willing to tell me when it was time to let it go. I had a whole team of “you will crush this” ninjas, led first and foremost by David LeDoux – his time is worth a thousand pounds a minute! I was also buoyed up and occasionally calmed down by Gary Gravely, Aaron Shapiro, Agapi Theodorou-Shapiro, and my minion, Tom Cruz. Finally, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my parents, Barbara and Harry Crotzer, for listening to many, many speeches by Toad over the years. Perhaps now it’s time to take up motoring, instead. ii ABSTRACT Certain classic children’s stories have transcended the generations to become cultural icons over a century after their publication. The endless adaptation and reinvention that creates iconography can be both assistance and obstruction to the preservation of authored stories which, unlike classic oral folk tales, were originally composed to a specific and unchanging design.
