More than any other Python he lived the complete lunacy of the show. Chapman was John Cleese's writing partner from their early days at Cambridge Footlights right through the Monty Python years. But it was Chapman's off-screen antics that are closest to the surreal qualities of a Python sketch. Terry Gilliam remembers how he would go into a restaurant and suddenly disappear: "He'd be under somebody's table licking the girl's feet while her date was there! Chapman had a wine cellar stuffed full with bottles of gin and at the height of his drinking - which started out as a nerve-calmer for performances Ronnie Barker Authorised Biography he would consume eight pints of gin a day. He fearlessly flaunted his homosexuality at a time when Ronnie Barker Authorised Biography was certainly not the done thing. This is the definitive, the official, the most lavish, the completely-different-to-anything-done-before Pythons' autobiography, reissued to coincide with the eagerly-anticipated live shows. Over forty years ago, a group of five Englishmen - and one wayward American - rewrote the rules of comedy. Its impact has been felt on the world ever since. From its humble beginnings, it Ronnie Barker Authorised Biography into the most influential movement in modern comedy. This is the definitive word on all things Pythonesque. A behind-the-scenes chronicle of the creation of the Terry Gilliam's 'The Brothers Grimm', charting all the highs and lows in the film's journey from script to screen. Told by both Gilliam and McCabe, who provides an on-set diary, this unique account reveals exactly how a film is made - or ruined - in today's Hollywood system. After two years of pre-production hell, the film was finally greenlit in March by Miramax's Dimension Films with a budget bigger than anything Gilliam has ever had to work with - on condition that the film was fast-tracked for a release. With stars Matt Damon and Ronnie Barker Authorised Biography Ledger playing the brothers Jake and Will, and co-starring Jonathan Pryce, hero from Gilliam's seminal BRAZIL, this movie is hailed as an "Indiana Jones and the Brothers Grimm"-style adventure, in which two Middle-Ages conmen who travel the countryside inventing horrendous ghost stories, only so they can claim to have defeated evil and be showered with gifts and women, finally encounter a real magical curse and are forced to find the courage to do a proper day's work of evil-vanquishing. Drawing upon numerous crewmember's diaries and candid, outspoken interviews with Terry Gilliam and the stars as the basis for this book, author Bob McCabe follows Gilliam through the pre-production battle of wills between director and producers, the nightmares of filming without budget, equipment or even cast, and the anarchy and brinkmanship of post-production inevitable in a Gilliam film. Ronnie Barker Authorised Biography seeks to unravel the truth buried between the lines, and reveals exactly how a film is made - or Ronnie Barker Authorised Biography - in today's Hollywood system. Guaranteed to fascinate film buffs and Terry Gilliam fans alike - already intrigued after the collapse of his Don Quixote movie formed the basis of a captivating documentary film - this amusing chronicle will be an unputdownable read and should put anyone who has aspired to direct a film in the future completely off the idea! Produced with assistance from the British Film Institute, this is a comprehensive history of the British film industry from its inception to the present day, with minute listings of the producers, directors, actors and studios behind a century of great British cinema.

  • Disabling Comedy and Anti-Discrimination Legislation
Disabling Comedy and Anti-Discrimination Legislation Colin Barnes 1991 A version of this paper entitled 'Disabling Comedy' appeared in Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People's Journal 'Coalition' December 1991 pp. 26 - 28 Over the last couple of years disabled people and their organizations have become increasingly concerned about disabling imagery in the media. One of the most important examples being the cynical exploitation of disabled people by charities in their efforts to raise money. Here I would like to highlight another form of disablism common to the media which disabled people are expected to endure, which is equally disabling and which is often overlooked or ignored: the exploitation of disabled people by professional non-disabled comedians on television. Of course laughing at disability is not new, disabled people have been a source of amusement and ridicule for non-disabled people throughout history. Along with the other so-called timeless universals of 'popular' humour such as foreigners, women and the clergy, Elizabethan joke books are full of jokes about people with every type of impairment imaginable. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries keeping 'idiots' as objects of humour was common among those who had the money to do so, and visits to Bedlam and other 'mental' institutions were a typical form of entertainment for the able but ignorant. While such thoughtless behaviour might be expected in earlier less enlightened times, making fun of disabled people is as prevalent now as it was then. It is especially common among professional non-disabled comedians. Indeed, several of the comedy 'greats' who influenced today's 'funny' men and women built their careers around disablist humour.

Chasing the Dream — Getting Off the Streets follows the journey of these men who’ve been living on the streets of Camden, but are ready to make a change for the better. Each man has agreed to participate in this rigorous program for individual reasons, but they share in the belief that they’ve hit rock bottom and they’re finally ready to seriously redeem their lives. • Ronnie Barker: Blue Plaque
Ronnie Barker: Blue Plaque How many local historians get to celebrate the life of a comedy legend? Not many, I’d guess, but the Blue Plaque we’re unveiling today is not only a tribute to Ronnie Barker’s glittering career but also a reminder of his strong links with Oxford and Oxfordshire. Described in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as ‘the country’s foremost comedy actor’, Ronnie Barker was admired and loved by millions of people. He was born in Bedford in 1929 and his professional stage career began in Aylesbury in 1948, but his formative years were spent in Oxford – and particularly here at 23 Church Cowley Road, the Barkers’ family home between 1935 and 1949. Later, between 1951 and 1955, Ronnie developed his career in repertory at the Oxford Playhouse before going on to achieve wider fame on the London stage and on radio and television. Ronnie – Ronald William George – Barker was the only son of Leonard Barker, a clerk working for Shell-Mex, and his wife Edith. The couple also had two daughters, Vera and Eileen. Leonard’s work brought him to Oxford in 1934 and the family lived initially in Cowley Road, moving to this new house on the Florence Park estate in 1935. Ronnie went to school at the then newly-built (and now vanished) Donnington Junior School in Cornwallis Road and won a scholarship to the City of Oxford High School for Boys in George Street in 1940. At school, Ronnie was remembered as ‘a round boy and very funny, even then’, and his nickname was Bumsy on account of his big bottom! He didn’t envisage an acting career –and there were few school productions in wartime – but he and a school friend, Mike Ford, staged one act plays for parents in local back gardens, demonstrating an interest in the theatre which was fuelled by visits to the New Theatre and the Oxford Playhouse.

In a third season of Pasta & Politics with Nick Acocella, the Politifax editor combines his two passions in a delicious talk show that will have viewers salivating for what’s on the stove as well as the juice of the conversation. W WIn the first few episodes, former State Senators Ray Lesniak and Joe Kyrillos show off their culinary skills in the kitchen. Lesniak, the second longest serving state legislator in history, dives into creating a meatball lasagna and recounts his involvement in the panorama of progressive issues like marriage equality and environmental protection. Kyrillos brings some flavor from his own family to the program — his brother’s summer marinara rigatoni recipe — and wittily observes his own political career history and motivation. Between debating beach replenishment and Superstorm Sandy relief, Congressman Frank Pallone whisks eggs, pecorino and pepper and sautés pancetta for a hearty take on spaghetti carbonara. To combat the rich creaminess of that dish, Congressman Donald Payne, Jr. whips up a heart-healthy no-carb pasta with roasted cauliflower, while speaking of his admiration and respect for those he has served with while representing New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District. A sure-to-please Italian meal of seared scallops over linguine with capers and lemon juice is prepped by Congressman Leonard Lance. After tasting his creation, Nick Acocella asked him about the instances when Lance defied his party leadership in both the State Legislature and Congress when his principles demanded it.

Most famously, The Two Ronnies, his longstanding partnership with Ronnie Barker, made him a household name and even a national treasure. ‘I do find the “national treasure” thing very touching,’ he once told one interviewer, ‘actually, it brings a tear to my eye when people call me that.’ Born in Edinburgh to a Scottish baker and his English wife, Ronnie was educated locally but shunned further education after a handful of performances in amateur theatrical shows at his church youth club convinced him he wanted to be an actor. He served in the Royal Air Force and was, at only five feet tall in his stocking feet, the shortest commissioned officer in the British Forces. After moving to London, he made his professional stage appearance as Ronald Corbett in Take it Easy in 1956. Initially sensitive about his height, he soon realised that he could use it to huge comic potential.
