About this product Product Information This is my autobiography, the exciting story of how I, Ronald Corbett, the son of an Edinburgh baker, became convinced that I had to seek my fortune and become an actor, of how I pursued that goal, found fame on television as one of The Two Ronnies, and managed to meet a fabulous cast of extraordinary people along the way. First I'll take you back to my schooldays and reveal the technique I developed for estimating the height of a girl before daring to ask her to dance. Then, for the first time, I'll fearlessly tell of my arrival in London and of my job of night club barman. And then there was The Two Ronnies, an incredibly successful television show with a man in glasses who, rather spookily, had the same first name as me. You can find out about how we tried to avoid becoming a double act, and why it was always goodnight from me and goodnight from him, but never ever goodnight from us. I'll also tell you about the time I was suddenly struck down by a mysterious illness which destroyed my sense of balance and prevented me from going on stage for several years.     Ronnie Barker: Blue Plaque How many local historians get to celebrate the life of a comedy legend? Not many, I’d guess, but the Blue Plaque we’re unveiling today is not only a tribute to Ronnie Barker’s glittering career but also a reminder of his strong links with Oxford and Oxfordshire. Described in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as ‘the country’s foremost comedy actor’, Ronnie Barker was admired and loved by millions of people. He was born in Bedford in 1929 and his professional stage career began in Aylesbury in 1948, but his formative years were spent in Oxford – and particularly here at 23 Church Cowley Road, the Barkers’ family home between 1935 and 1949. Later, between 1951 and 1955, Ronnie developed his career in repertory at the Oxford Playhouse before going on to achieve wider fame on the London stage and on radio and television. Ronnie – Ronald William George – Barker was the only son of Leonard Barker, a clerk working for Shell-Mex, and his wife Edith. The couple also had two daughters, Vera and Eileen. Leonard’s work brought him to Oxford in 1934 and the family lived initially in Cowley Road, moving to this new house on the Florence Park estate in 1935. Ronnie went to school at the then newly-built (and now vanished) Donnington Junior School in Cornwallis Road and won a scholarship to the City of Oxford High School for Boys in George Street in 1940. At school, Ronnie was remembered as ‘a round boy and very funny, even then’, and his nickname was Bumsy on account of his big bottom! He didn’t envisage an acting career –and there were few school productions in wartime – but he and a school friend, Mike Ford, staged one act plays for parents in local back gardens, demonstrating an interest in the theatre which was fuelled by visits to the New Theatre and the Oxford Playhouse.

It was time to give up Anthea’s amazing studio in NW6 – a medieval great hall with minstrels’ gallery. What could possibly compete with that? The Suburb could. They even thought it was reasonably priced. That was in 1971 – so, as Ian says, “We were the last who ever had that thought. Our daughters Clemency, Grace and Hannah all regard themselves as Suburbites but will they ever live here again? We doubt it.“ All they knew then about Hampstead Garden Suburb was that it was a bit of a mouthful and that Harold Wilson had just moved out. But there was something eerily familiar about it all to Ian. “It was a long time before the penny dropped that I had walked to school every day through Romford Garden Suburb (Yes! Look it up) which has a similar range of vernacular-inspired cottages through to larger houses with the same grey brick with red window surrounds as here.” Over the years Ian has called himself ‘an actor, writer, editor, director and producer. It’s whatever came to hand, but mostly in television’. It all started when he was at Oxford and ‘mucked around at the smart Alec end of comedy’ with the likes of the future Pythons, Michael Palin and Terry Jones. They were in plays and revues and went on to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe. Obsessive fans of Python will know that it’s Ian who took the part of the Dead Indian on a Pile of Dung and of the Irritating Man who pops up constantly in Python’s Election Night saying, “Can I just say this is my fi rst time on television?“ After graduating Ian got a job at Granada Television and his fi rst credit as a scriptwriter was with Michael Frayn and John Bird.
