    Museum Tusculanum Press :: University of Copenhagen :: www.mtp.dk :: [email protected] THE NATIONALIZATION OF CULTURE Reprinted from Ethnologia Europaea 19:1, 1989 Orvar Löfgren Although nationalism is an example of a cultural force which in many cases has overruled other, traditional identities and loyalties in nineteenth- and twentieth-century society, the study of na- tionalism has not been focused very much on the cultural praxis of national identity formation and sharing. As a result, the ideology and politics of nationalism are far better understood than the creation of Hungarianness and Swedishness. This paper1 discusses some approaches in the national culture-building of everyday life, using mainly Swedish examples. The focus is also on national culture as a battle arena, where different interest groups use arguments about national unity or heritage in hegemonic struggles. Different types of “nationalization processes” are discussed, as for example ways in which cer- tain cultural domains come to be defined as national, how national space is transformed into cul- tural space, or the way in which every new generation not only is nationalized into a given heritage but also creates its own version of a common, national frame of reference.     Assa Kauppi, Frozen Fright sculpture series, Galleri Andersson/Sandström PRESS RELEASE: ASSA KAUPPI Frozen Fright 6.4 - 13.5 2017 Opening Thursday, April 6th from 5-8 pm Assa Kauppi’s breakthrough came in 2011, when she won over viewers and critics with her enduring sculptures. The Race is Over (2011) and In Search of A Winner (2013) addressed contemporary issues, such as competitiveness and the pressure to perform. In this third solo exhibition with Galleri Andersson/Sandström in Stockholm, she once again calls attention on tendencies in today’s society. The series Frozen Fright, consists of eleven different characters with unique individual faiths, but all share a universal feeling of angst and seriousness. Placed on the floor, the eleven bronze figures range in ethnicity, age, and represent various segments of the world population. The arrangement invokes a similar feeling of an aerial photography and a snap-shot of people laying down, gazing up towards the sky. Hanging from the ceiling are hand-stitched parachutes made from synthetic silk, the largest of which is nearly one meter in diameter gives the appearance of glass. Like the tentacles of a jellyfish, the parachute’s cords are in a temporarily resting state. A clear message is communicated, a sense of ambivalence increases, is there a potential danger or is help on the way? Son of man, You cannot say, or guess, for you know only A heap of broken images…” Sculptures in fired otherwise pristine white clay are dirtied with pinks and greys. They appear like casts taken off a fractured bone; in having been used to mend and support they are now cut away and discarded themselves. There is a sense of ‘the ghost in the shell’ – a phantom manifestation - in that whatever human presence was once behind, or inside, these casings it has now left or decayed. Indeed, one of Veronica Brovall’s preoccupations is anatomy, but her approach to form is wedded to abstraction. Are these figures, seemingly suspended in some kind of dance macabre with limbs twisting and outstretched, male or female frames? There is a dynamism here in the apparent movement of Brovall’s almost bodies, they stretch, strain and pull, but it is arrested: not caught in a delicate moment but suddenly encased in stone as if paralysed under the gorgon’s stare. As the well-known idiom warns, ‘If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen’. Brovall’s latest exhibition title instead urges us to stay in the flames. Her concept is one of accepting discomfort, not running from urgency but instead facing it head on and even marinating in whatever hellfire we might find ourselves in.

Here new light is shed on John C. and his role in the art of his time. by Hanne Abildgaard / Published October 2015 RESUMÉ The article analyses the process that made the barber John Christensen a celebrated figure on the Danish interwar art scene over the course of just a few years, as well as the conditions that prompted his marginalisation in art history from 1950. The text points to a vein of ‘Primitivist’ art, supported by art institutions, and to an ever-growing awareness of working class audiences and the labour movement as important factors within the field of art. Taking its starting point in John C. and a number of artists associated with him, the article proposes a more pluralistic view of the art created during this period; a position that offers more nuances than the widespread view of two irreconcilable blocks: avant-garde and tradition. ARTICLE In 2011 Statens Museum for Kunst (the SMK) acquired Circus Artists in the Ring, 1932, thereby making it the fourth painting by John Christensen to enter the museum’s collections. The first, Snow-Clearing from 1933, was received as a donation in 1940, whereas the other two, A Lady Wearing a Hat. The Artist’s Wife, Dagny Marie Christensen from 1935 and Self-Portrait from 1936, were purchased in the 1980s. The museum collection also encompasses thirty-nine of Christensen’s works on paper; the first such purchase was made in 1932, the most recent in 2002.

Moderna Museet visar konst från år 1900 till idag. Här kan du se målningar, skulpturer, fotografier och videokonst av svenska och utländska konstnärer. Moderna Museet visar tillfälliga utställningar, som du kan se en kort tid. De finns i rum på plan 4 och plan 2. Titta på kartan i häftet. Där har rummen för tillfälliga utställningar gul och orange färg. Moderna Museet samlar konstverk och har en stor samling av konst från 1900-talet till idag. I rummen med grön färg på kartan visas konstverk i samlingen. Det finns inte plats att visa all konst Moderna Museet äger. Vi visar ett urval som ändras ibland. Utanför museet finns flera konstverk. Du kan läsa om dem längre fram i det här häftet. 2 Lättläst på Moderna Museet Om Moderna Museet Staten äger Moderna Museet och därför äger också du konsten här. Därför har vi också fri entré till vår samling. Museet har omkring 8 tusen målningar, skulpturer och konstverk som kallas installationer. Museet har också omkring 30 tusen teckningar, akvareller som är målade med vattenfärg, och tryck på papper, som kallas grafik. Dessutom 100 tusen fotografier, filmer och videokonstverk. De flesta konstverken i samlingen är gjorda av män. Museet köper konstverk av kvinnor från 1900-talet som vi tycker fattas i samlingen. Moderna Museet öppnade 1958 och blev en viktig plats för ny konst i Sverige. För omkring femton år sedan byggdes ett nytt och större museum på samma plats.

Photo : Thomas Hennocque Plongeant les visiteurs au cœur des processus de création, faisant surgir les visages de ceux qui peuplaient les ateliers de Montparnasse, l’exposition met en lumière les rapports complexes qui se nouent entre maître et élève, entre artiste et praticien, à travers la figure du sculpteur Antoine Bourdelle. Leurs trajectoires, la fidélité à l’enseignement du maître ou son rejet violent, seront mis en scène dans l’exposition à travers 165 œuvres, dont une cinquantaine de photographies, une cinquantaine de sculptures et une quarantaine de dessins. Au centre du parcours, spécifiquement créé pour l’exposition, un module visuel, sonore et tactile dédié au processus de la taille par mise aux points. « Je ne suis pas un maître d’école, un professeur, mais un artiste qui travaille avec vous. » Antoine Bourdelle est une figure majeure de l’enseignement des arts à Paris au début du XXe siècle. Professeur, maître, mentor et parfois père de substitution, il se voit en camarade au milieu des artistes en devenir qui l’entourent.
