Indigenous leadership is complex and draws on the wisdom and experience of Elders and others, integrating the spiritual with the political, while entertaining leadership in the expanding diversity of Australian society. This is a challenge for cultural protection and safety. We need to identify what we want our future to look like, to feel safe, to feel connected and to have a sense of ownership and control over our destiny. Young Aboriginal people have an important role in the defining of our future. They provide the sense of perpetuity. Their voice can be heard and must be heard. The Koori Communities Leadership Program is the first of its kind to include community-based youth leadership projects and a state-wide leadership network. The community youth leadership projects based in metropolitan and rural areas in Victoria provide leadership training for young Kooris, mentoring by senior community members and support and resources to develop leadership skills through the development of community activities. At a state level, the network for the future has developed into the Victorian Indigenous Leadership Network involving leaders in Koori community, arts, sports, education, legal, justice, health and academic settings. The network is a response to the challenge of developing long-term planning and a vision for the future of communities. Supporting the development of leaders gives us hope that the future can

    The legal outcomes the Gunditjmara achieved in the 1980s are often overlooked in the history of land rights and native title in Australia. The High Court Onus v Alcoa case and the subsequent settlement negotiated with the State of Victoria, sit alongside other well known bench marks in our land rights history, including the Gurindji strike (also known as the Wave Hill Walk-Off) and land claim that led to the development of land rights legislation in the Northern Territory. By heat-treating them, more plants could be eaten, and new nutrients were available. The heat killed parasites and made it easier to digest meat. Something that led to a higher calorie and nutritional intake, which made it easier to survive and have more children.” Banyule Council selected this beautiful piece of artwork for our RAP cover, as the short-finned eels and the Australian raven both feature in this picture and are recognised by the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung as being historically significant animals to Banyule Flats. The Australian Raven is known as Whaa and is the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people’s moiety. Banyule Flats was also an important area of annual eel trapping and spear fishing for Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung People.     DJILLONG Djillong: ‘tongue of land’ is the Wadawurrung / Wathaurong Aboriginal name for Geelong TIMELINE www.djillong.net.au At least 65,000 years ago Evidence of Aboriginal people living on the Australian continent and of the world’s earliest human art. (French cave painting 5,000 years ago, the Mona Lisa, 14th century) 1600s 1688 William Dampier (England) lands on the west coast of Australia. 1700s 1770 Captain James Cook (England) lands on the east coast of Australia. 1800s 1800 Lt James Grant (Lady Nelson ship) sails through Bass Strait. 1802 Dispossession in the Geelong district begins as Lieutenant John Murray takes possession of Port Phillip in King George III’s name and raises the British flag. First contact between Wadawurrung and the Europeans. William Buckley escapes from Capt. Collins’ temporary settlement at Sorrento and walks around Port Phillip Bay. Later he is invited to join the Mon:mart clan of Wadawurrung People when Kondiak:ruk 1803 (Swan Wing) declares him her husband returned from the dead. Aboriginal people believed that the dead were reincarnated in a white form. They call Buckley Morran:gurk (Ghost blood). 1820s 1824 Hume & Hovell arrive on Wadawurrung land at Corio Bay and are greeted by Wadawurrung resistance. In Tasmania settlers are authorised to shoot Aboriginal people. Martial law is declared in Bathurst (NSW) after violent clashes between settlers and Aboriginal people. 1827 Batman and Gellibrand apply to the colonial government for Kulin nation land. 1828 Martial law declared in Tasmania where the Solicitor General says ‘the Aborigines are the open enemies of the King and in a state of actual warfare against him’.
