Beyond the Gig Economy How New Technologies Are Reshaping the Future of Work | 2016
Beyond the Gig Economy How New Technologies Are Reshaping the Future of Work | 2016 By Jon Lieber, Chief Economist, Thumbtack and Lucas Puente, Economic Analyst, Thumbtack Executive Summary Long-run economic trends and new technologies are pushing workers away from traditional employee-employer relationships and into self- employment. Thanks in part to advances in technology that have put smartphones in the pockets of millions of Americans, it has never been easier for an individual to go online and start earning income quickly and flexibly. But this new “gig economy” is not monolithic or static. It has different sectors, and the gig economy of on-demand, low-skilled, easily automated logistics or delivery services will not be around in 20 years. What will remain are skilled professionals. This report, Beyond the Gig Economy, draws from publicly available data as well as Thumbtack’s proprietary marketplace and survey data of tens of thousands of small businesses to show the variety of ways in which technology is enabling middle-class Americans to find economic opportunity with tools that have never previously been available to them. “There’s never been a better time to be a worker with special skills or the right education, because these people can use technology to create and capture value.” —Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee "The Second Machine Age" (2014) Beyond the Gig Economy | 2016 2 Key Findings • The gig economy as we know it will not last. • To date, skills marketplaces have broader In the past few years, analysts and reporters adoption than commodified platforms. have obsessively focused on transportation Because they are leveraging the skills of an technology platforms such as Uber and Lyft existing group of qualified professionals, and delivery technology platforms such as these marketplaces have an automatic reach Instacart and the workers needed for these across the country. -

STAFF REPORT 10/9/2019 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
STAFF REPORT 10/9/2019 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members FROM: Jacob I. Alvarez, Assistant to the City Manager SUBJECT: Sponsorship Request for Date Harvest Festival Ferris Wheel STAFF RECOMMENDATION: That the City Council approve a $5,400 sponsorship for naming rights and free Ferris Wheel rides for attendees of the Date Harvest Festival that will take place on November 9, 2019. BACKGROUND: As you may recall, City Council on June 12, 2019 approved sponsoring the Date Harvest Festival in-kind for the use of Las Flores Park and the use of the Coachella Library meeting rooms and park for the preceding Harvest Dinner Event. The events budget is approximately $208,000 and since the City Council’s approval the event’s Producer has been working diligently to gain sponsorships to cover the events’ expenses. To this end, the sponsorships that have been collected cover 75% of the total budget so far. The event’s Producer is currently working with local non-profits to presell tickets as a fundraiser where the non-profits get to keep 50% of the ticket proceeds. Additionally, the Producer has reached out to the Twentynine Palms Military Base where the Date Harvest Festival will allow free admission for those who serve in the military or who are military veterans. MEDIA/ADVERTISING The Date Harvest Festival has appeared in the Desert Sun, NBC Palm Springs, and National Public Radio (NPR). The Greater Palm Springs Convention Visitors Bureau has promised 25 Electronic Billboards in Los Angeles and San Diego along with advertising in airports in Canada. -
PE & QSR: Ambition on a Bun Asian Venture Capital Journal | 06
PE & QSR: Ambition on a bun Asian Venture Capital Journal | 06 November 2019 Many private equity investors think they can make a fast buck from fast dining, but rolling out a Western-style brand in Asia requires discipline on valuation and competence in execution Gondola Group was among the last remaining assets in Cinven’s fourth fund, and as one LP tells it, exit prospects were uncertain. The portfolio company’s primary business was PizzaExpress, which had 437 outlets in the UK and a further 68 internationally as of June 2014. Expansion in China by the brand’s Hong Kong-based franchise partner had been measured, with about a dozen restaurants apiece in Hong Kong and the mainland. Cinven wasn’t willing to be so patient. In May 2014, Gondola opened a directly owned outlet in Beijing – as a showcase of what the brand might achieve in China when backed by enough capital and ambition. Two months after that, PizzaExpress was sold to China’s Hony Capital for around $1.5 billion. By the start of the following year, Cinven had offloaded the remaining Gondola assets and generated a 2.4x return for its investors. The LP was “pleasantly surprised” by the outcome. Hony’s experience with the restaurant chain hasn’t be as fulfilling. Adverse commercial conditions in the UK – still home to 480 of its approximately 620 outlets – has eaten into margins and left PizzaExpress potentially unable to sustain an already highly leveraged capital structure. Hony is considering restructuring options for a GBP1.1 billion ($1.4 billion) debt pile. -
