After 65 years in the sport, Ernie still rows every week. The rowers also included 81-year-old John Howard and Jennifer Rees, the club’s former ladies’ captain. After the five-mile row, the celebration continued with a buffet and drinks. Ernie’s son Rob presented him with a framed photo of an Olympic Four signed by Sir Steve Redgrave, and Julie Dale, former secretary of the District Line Rowing Club, phoned from Australia to wish Ernie well.
