  • How to Re-Shine Depeche Mode on Album Covers
Sociology Study, December 2015, Vol. 5, No. 12, 920‐930 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2015.12.003 DAVID PUBLISHING Simple but Dominant: How to Reshine Depeche Mode on Album Covers After 80’s Cinla Sekera Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze the album covers of English band Depeche Mode after 80’s according to the principles of graphic design. Established in 1980, the musical style of the band was turned from synth‐pop to new wave, from new wave to electronic, dance, and alternative‐rock in decades, but their message stayed as it was: A non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. As a graphic design product, album covers are pre‐print design solutions of two dimensional surfaces. Graphic design, as a design field, has its own elements and principles. Visual elements and typography are the two components which should unite with the help of the six main principles which are: unity/harmony; balance; hierarchy; scale/proportion; dominance/emphasis; and similarity and contrast. All album covers of Depeche Mode after 80’s were designed in a simple but dominant way in order to form a unique style. On every album cover, there are huge color, size, tone, and location contrasts which concluded in simple domination; domination of a non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. Keywords Graphic design, album cover, design principles, dominance, Depeche Mode Design is the formal and functional features graphic design are line, shape, color, value, texture, determination process, made before the production of and space.

The Agit Reader • What's the Rumpus? Depeche Mode: The Dark Progre... http://www.agitreader.com/news/depeche_mode-the_dark_progression.html Depeche Mode: The Dark Progression feature Sexy Intellectual album reviews Having my first exposure to Depeche Mode with “People Are People” as an adolescent was probably not the best what's the rumpus? introduction to the band. In later years filled with music suited to teenage rage, the band became poster boys for all past perfect that was fey, just another group of pretty boys wrapped in pseudo-goth garb. primitive futures As the years have passed, I have grown to have a greater appreciation of the band, though I still would never place their darkened synth-pop in the same echelon as such contemporaries as New Order and the Cure, even if they may seem similar on a surface level. Still, I have warmed to records like Black Celebration and Music for the Masses with time, and now I’m probably willing to say that Depeche Mode were at least innovators of a sort, even if such innovation was accompanied by a good deal of stylized panache. Further illustrating the view of Depeche Mode as innovative artists is this new documentary on DVD, Depeche Mode: The Dark Progression. Tracing the band from its beginning in Essex and initial success while being led by Vincent Clarke (later of Yaz and Erasure) to the pinnacle of their artistic and commercial success in the late ’80s and early ’90s, the film presents the band in the best of lights. (It never gets to singer Dave Gahan’s later drug problems, for instance.) Most importantly, it also shows how they were among the first to bring electronics into the pop world, following in the footsteps of influences like Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, whose Andy McClusky provides some of the movie’s most enjoyable commentary, and the Normal.

DEPECHE MODE IN EAST(ERN) GERMANY Lev Kerbel’s forty-ton bust of Karl Marx in Chemnitz INTERVIEWS: A.J. SAMUELS AND MAX DAX / PHOTOGRAPHY: ELENA PANOULI AND LUCI LUX Unfairly dismissed in their native England as new romantic fop-pop, Mute label stalwarts Depeche Mode have built up one of the most musi- cally influential and obsessive fan bases almost everywhere else in the world. Particularly in Berlin and the former East Germany, the band has spawned a unique kind of faith and devotion, from DM-themed BDSM parties to the world’s largest archive of band memorabilia. In a country where rock and roll was officially defined as a capitalist plot to corrupt working class youth, Depeche Mode’s apolitical stance translated into real, subcultural capital. It’s a reason why their alternative cultural hegemony continues today amongst the pale and Prussian. And we have the Stasi files to prove it. FRIDAY Kirsten and Thaur of KitKatClub fame decided spontaneously to 6:30 p.m. fuck in the middle of the dance floor downstairs in the legend- BERLIN ary trance-oriented Bunker Club.
