This practice stems, I argue, in part because of O’Casey’s tendency towards an appreciation for beautiful things stemming from his artistic leanings.

Dates: 1976- 1995 Administrative History: The Irish Prisoner of War Committee formed in 1981 in Ireland. Following Ireland’s establishment, Irish Prisoner of War Committees surfaced in Hamilton, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver. Throughout its operation, the Vancouver Irish Prisoner of War Committee (V.I.P.O.W.C.) held rallies, hosted lectures, organized protests, campaigned for prisoner rights’ in the pursuit of Irish Republicanism. The V.I.P.OW.C. also supported other human rights organizations such as Amnesty International. Producing a weekly radio show for Vancouver Co-Op Radio comprised one of the primary activities of the V.I.P.O.W.C. In 1987, the V.I.P.O.W.C. changed its name to the Irish Solidarity Committee as a member of the newly formed Canadian Irish Solidarity Network. The Irish Solidarity Committee established itself to coordinate Irish Solidarity Groups in Canada and receive representation from Sinn Fein. The Irish Solidarity Committee also produced a newsletter: “The Irish Solidarity News.” Scope and Content: The fonds primarily consists of the organizational, administrative, and operational records of the V.I.P.O.W.C. and the Irish Solidarity Committee dating from 1977 to 1994. The fonds also includes 165 audio cassettes of “Saoirse Eirleann.” The fonds divides into three series: The Textual Material Series, the “Saoirse Eirleann” Audio Cassette Series, and the Events Material Series.

Question: How would you like to see the IRSP developing over the coming year? Answer: I would like to see greater emphasis on political education within the party. We must research, study and discuss, so as to further develop the necessary revolutionary theory which is required to bring to fruition national liberation and socialism in Ireland. Without revolutionary theory, all our efforts will be in vain. Most of our members have come to a commitment to revolutionary activity out of their experience, be it the naked oppression of British imperialist forces, or the violence of unemployment and bad conditions – North and South. We have never lacked for battlers against oppression. But we would do well to take heed of James Connolly’s observation, The Irish are not philosophers as a rule, they proceed too rapidly from thought to action.

The argument here is not that the internet substitutes face-to-face contacts amongst Irish Republicans, including violent dissidents, nor that it currently plays a central role in processes of radicalisation into violent dissident groups, but that it has an important support function in terms of providing an ‘always-on’ space for discussion, consumption, and production of Irish Republicanism and thus a potentially educative role in terms of introducing ‘newbies’ to violent dissident Republicanism while also acting as a ‘maintenance’ space for the already committed. This exploratory study considers the importance of these functions in the context of repeated suggestions that the dissidents have no significant support base or constituency as internet activity certainly gives the appearance of some such support.     | 37 CUMANN NA MBAN REGALIA Uniforms, Badges & Flags, 1914-1923 BY AILBHE ROGERS & PAUL GOSLING umann na mBan (henceforth CnamB) was founded in April 1914 as a women’s auxiliary organisation whose activities included: fi rst aid; the transporta- Ction and concealment of arms, ammunition and despatch- es; drilling; intelligence and propaganda work; providing for men on the run; prisoner network support and weap- ons care. The relationship between the CnamB and the Irish Volunteer leadership, has been explored in depth by historians, while the 2018 centenary commemorations drew considerable attention to questions of suff rage and female republicanism within the movement. However, there has been a distinct lack of research conducted on the militaristic aspects of CnamB as an organisation and the material culture surrounding CnamB, namely uniforms, badges and fl ags that survive in public and private posses- sion (Figs. 1-4). This paper will attempt to rectify this and shed light on the merits of interdisciplinary approaches to the study of military regalia. UNIFORMS: The fi rst directive given by the CnamB Execu- tive on the question of coordinated attire came in Septem- ber 1914 when fi rst-aid training sections were instructed to wear ‘a washing frock, nurse’s caps, aprons and cuff s. An armlet should be worn on the left arm with the words ‘Cumann na mBan’ printed, stencilled or embroidered above a green cross’ (Fig. 1).     Plough and the Stars Flag Junior Cycle The study of historic objects will contribute to student achievement of the Statements of Learning for Junior Cycle, in particular: Statement 3: creates, appreciates and critically interprets a wide range of texts. Statement 8: values local, national and international heritage, understands the importance of the relationship between past and current events and the forces that drive change. Junior Certificate history The study of historic objects is an essential component of the History Syllabus for Junior Certificate. Engagement with primary source material is vital to the achievement of course objectives, which include the acquisition of knowledge, concepts and skills relating to the study of history. Students can acquire knowledge of the past in an organic way through the study of historic objects. Key concepts, including source, evidence, chronology, bias/objectivity, fact/opinion, propaganda can be taught using primary sources examples. Engagement with historic objects enables students to acquire the skills of the historian, including the ability to locate and select information in a source and to critically analyse and communicate that information. The study of objects relating to the Easter Rising, 1916, has a direct link to the syllabus topic: ‘Political developments in Ireland in the late 19th century and the 20th century’. Lesson activities Starter activity: ask students questions that get them thinking about why some organisations use flags, what is represented by the particular colours or symbols on a flag and how a flag helps to create unity in an organisation. Students could relate to their own examples of flags used to represent their school, their local team, their county or their country.

Jim was a member of the Republican Movement in the 1950s and early 1960s He was a leading activist in the H-Block campaign, and was Chairman of the Cork City and County H-Block / Armagh Committee. Question: How would you like to see the IRSP developing over the coming year? Answer: I would like to see greater emphasis on political education within the party. We must research, study and discuss, so as to further develop the necessary revolutionary theory which is required to bring to fruition national liberation and socialism in Ireland. Without revolutionary theory, all our efforts will be in vain. Most of our members have come to a commitment to revolutionary activity out of their experience, be it the naked oppression of British imperialist forces, or the violence of unemployment and bad conditions – North and South. We have never lacked for battlers against oppression. But we would do well to take heed of James Connolly’s observation, The Irish are not philosophers as a rule, they proceed too rapidly from thought to action.
