Funktionäre und Politiker haben dem früheren Nationalspieler Thomas Hitzlsperger nach seinem Coming-out gratuliert. Die Sponsorenszene jedoch schweigt. von Manuel Heckel 13. Januar 2014 Ein Idol, eine Legende ist er nie gewesen. Und doch könnte Thomas Hitzlsperger nun eine Ikone werden. Er ist der erste deutsche Fußball-Nationalspieler, der offen über seine Homosexualität spricht. Das ist eine Sensation in einer Sportart, in der Homophobie zum Alltag gehört. Für einen Moment schien es, als gäbe es niemanden mehr in Deutschland, der für Thomas Hitzlspergers Schritt keinen Respekt aufbrächte. Am Mittwochnachmittag hatte sich der frühere Fußball-Nationalspieler erstmals in einem Interview zu seiner Homosexualität geäußert. Seither wurde er von allen Seiten beglückwünscht: von Funktionären, Politikern, sogar von der Bild- Zeitung. Die Firmen aber, die mit dem Fußball Geld verdienen, waren auffällig still. Einzig der Sportartikelhersteller Puma, ein ehemaliger Ausrüster von Hitzlsperger, gratulierte via Twitter („Es ist richtig, was er getan hat"). Andere Firmen wie Adidas indes wollen das Thema öffentlich nicht kommentieren. Auch Nike meldete sich auf wiederholte Nachfrage nicht zurück. Die Reaktion der Sponsoren und Ausrüster ist alles andere als unwichtig. Hitzlsperger hatte die Gründe dafür im Interview selbst genannt. Für die sportliche Karriere möge es keinen Unterschied machen, ob ein Fußballspieler schwul ist oder nicht, sagte er. Für die Werbebranche aber könnte ein Outing durchaus von Bedeutung sein. Sponsoren achten naturgemäß penibel auf das Image ihrer Werbeträger. Welche Widerstände ein schwuler Fußballspieler bei Fans und Konsumenten hervorruft, weiß niemand von ihnen.
