Mr. Cony was appointed Lieutenant in the regular navy in 1866, but at that time he was master of a merchant vessel at sea. Before he could accept this appointment, he went down with his ship off Cape Hatteras on 10 February 1867. The United States Ship C O N Y (DDE-508) Built by the Bath Iron Works Corporation, Bath, Maine, the U. S. S. CONY was first commissioned in Boston, Massachusetts, on 30 October 1942.
