The people partook of them and worshiped that god. (3) Thus Israel attached itself to Baal-peor, and the LORD was incensed with Israel. (4) The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the ringleaders and have them publicly impaled before the LORD, so that the LORD’s wrath may turn away from Israel.” (5) So Moses said to Israel’s officials, “Each of you slay those of his men who attached themselves to Baal-peor.” (6) Just then one of the Israelites came and brought a Midianite woman over to his companions, in the sight of Moses and of the whole Israelite community who were weeping at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. (7) When Phinehas, son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, saw this, he left the assembly and, taking a spear in his hand, (8) he followed the Israelite into the chamber and stabbed both of them, the Israelite and the woman, through the belly. Then the plague against the Israelites was checked. (9) Those who died of the plague numbered twenty-four thousand. (10) The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, (11) “Phinehas, son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the Israelites by displaying among them his passion for Me, so that I did not wipe out the Israelite people in My passion. (12) Say, therefore, ‘I grant him My pact of friendship. (13) It shall be for him and his descendants after him a pact of priesthood for all time, because he took impassioned action for his G-d, thus making expiation for the Israelites.’” (14) The name of the Israelite who was killed, the one who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri son of Salu, chieftain of a Simeonite ancestral house. (15) The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi daughter of Zur; he was the tribal head of an ancestral house in Midian. (16) The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, (17) “Assail the Midianites and defeat them— (18) for they assailed you by the trickery they practiced against you—because of the affair of Peor and because of the affair of their kinswoman Cozbi, daughter of the Midianite chieftain, who was killed at the time of the plague on account of Peor.” The flashback 3. (8) Along with their other victims, they slew the kings of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword... (14) Moses became angry with the commanders of the army, the officers of thousands and the officers of hundreds, who had come back from the military campaign. (15) Moses said to them, “You have spared every female! (16) Yet they are the very ones who, at the bidding of Balaam, induced the Israelites to trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, so that the LORD’s community was struck by the plague. 4. Nechama Leibowitz "Why does the Torah not reveal to us in parashat Balak the evil schemes of Bil'am, prior to the description of Israel's sin, when they became entangled in his corruption? And why does the Torah not mention Bil'am's role and his incitement when it talks about the scheming of Midian?" "It seems that the Torah wanted to teach us a great and important lesson here. Although the initiative was Bilam's, and it was he who advised that the daughters of Moav be sent to the Israelite camp in order to destroy their most precious asset - the purity of the sexual aspect of their lives - nevertheless, the guilty ones are Israel…But the inciter is not exempt from punishment, and therefore in the parasha where we learn of Bilam's punishment… 5. Rabbi Elchanan Samet We have already noted the special literary characteristic of our story, where the first part describes the events that took place around Ba'al Pe'or AS THEY APPEARED AT THE TIME, while the hidden facts are supplied AS NEEDED, in the second half - and hence the flashback in this half. The 'need' here is to give new significance to the facts recounted previously, in order to indicate their future influence. We learn the significance of Pinchas's act: his fearlessly slaying a prince of Israel and the daughter of a Midianite king, thereby stopping the plague, brings his reward and that of his descendants for all eternity. We also learn the significance of Israel's shameful sin and the plague that struck them: these were caused by the Midianites' scheming and engendered the command that the Midianites be "vexed" and struck. Pinchas Emerging as New Leader 6. They had no pictures and no maps. They had only what God may have shown Moses. Surely, God understood the hazard that was present in that setting of idleness. Why do you think He allowed them to camp there for some time? They were camped in a small flat area below the hills of Moab.

    UCF Tuesday Night Bible Study UCF - Tuesday Night Bible St... Page 1 of 6 Lesson 5: The Book of Numbers Numbers covers about 38 years of desert wandering by the Israelites. It is called Numbers because it includes two numberings of the men of war, in chapters 1-4 and 26-27. The first numbering was made the second year after the Israelites left Egypt. Then, with Judah leading the way, each tribe was given a position in the march to Canaan. From this point on, Numbers is a wilderness book. It describes the failure of Israel at Kadesh-Barnea and their wilderness wanderings until the unbelieving generation died, after which the second numbering took place. This book has been described as the "longest funeral march in history." An interesting fact to note is the nation of Israel did not grow during its wilderness wanderings. In fact, they declined in number by almost 2,000 men of war. Thus, they wasted 38 years, suffered unnecessary afflictions, and did not grow numerically. This is what unbelief does to the Christian; it produces wasted time, wasted effort, and spiritual stalemate. Numbers has many spiritual lessons for us today, as explained in Hebrews 3-4 and 1 Corinthians 10:6-10.     Book Study – The Torah A tool to help with reading the Bible. Produced by XA Denton Chi Alpha | UNT & TWU Introduction: In the first book of the Torah, Genesis, we see God create a good and perfect world. Included in His creation was mankind, which was to act as God's representatives on earth. Mankind, however, had other ideas and chose to define what was good and evil for themselves. After this decision, things get bad for mankind – so bad that God has to eventually destroy them all with the flood and start over. This represents the beginning of God's mission to rescue and restore His world. To begin this mission, God raises up Abraham and promises him that through his descendants all of the nations of the world would come to know God's blessing. It turns out, though, that Abraham and his descendants were a pretty dysfunctional family. However, in spite of their mishaps, God still continues to use them for His plan. This brings us to the second book of the Torah, Exodus. Here, the Israelites are enslaved to the Egyptians, and the first half of the book focuses on how God raises up Moses to deliver His people from the Egyptians. God saves His people from the Egyptians, but now they are a nation without a home, wandering in the desert and unsure why God saved them in the first place. From this point forward, we see God begin to try and restore His presence among His People. He comes down on Mount Sinai, gives Moses the Ten Commandments, and gives instructions on how the Israelites should build a temple – a place where God will be able to live among them.

In the midst of their final preparations to enter the land God promised to their ancestors, yet another obstacle emerges. Balak, king of Moab, grows concerned about the fierce reputation of the Israelites, which he observed in the Israelites’ encounter with the Amorites (Numbers 21:21–32). Balak’s subjects worry that the Israelites, due to their large numbers, will devour the resources of Moab. In response, Balak hires a well-known seer named Balaam to curse the Israelites, thus reflecting the widely held belief in the ancient world that putting a curse on someone was an effective means of subduing an enemy. The standoff between the powers of the God of Israel and those of a foreign seer proves to be no contest. Even Balaam’s talking female donkey, who represents the biblical ideal of wisdom, recognizes the efficacy of God’s power—unlike her human master, the professional seer. Although hired to curse the Israelites, Balaam ends up blessing them instead. In a series of four oracles, Balaam ultimately does the opposite of what Balak desires and establishes that the power of Israel’s God is greater than even the most skilled human seers.

What has He called you to do for Him? Numbers 2: The children of Israel obeyed what the Lord said, they followed his direction, even with where to sleep! What direction has God given you that may not seem important or make sense right now but you must follow? Numbers 3: God gave specific instructions throughout His Word that must be obeyed. If we are not obedient there will be consequences. How have you know this to be true in your life? Numbers 4: Sometimes the tasks God calls us to are a burden. They can be difficult to bear. It aimed at and equity ( צִ ָד ָק ה ,finding out if the Biblical concept of Justice (Hebrew which are the hall marks of every society that operates ,( ֵמ י שָׁ ר ,Hebrew) under the rule of Law, have been duly applied in the Niger Delta crisis. The analyses employed Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. Data gathered both from the primary and secondary sources were analyzed through the hermeneutical, descriptive and analytical methods. The findings of the paper are that Niger Delta peoples have a right to far better living condition than is on offer presently, and available data justify this claim. The and ( צִ ָד ָק ה ,paper is of the view that the Biblical concept of Justice (Hebrew as prescribed in Numbers 31: 27, can be applied in ,( ֵמ י שָׁ ר ,equity (Hebrew the Niger Delta agitation issue. In the light of the above findings, the paper concludes that to achieve the desired peace, anchored on the Old Testament idea there is the need to engage every oil bearing community as a stake holder in the entire process of oil exploitation in their community.
