  • Groundwater in Jurassic Carbonates
Groundwater in Jurassic carbonates Field Excursion to the Lincolnshire Limestone: Karst development, source protection and landscape history 25 June 2015 Tim Atkinson (University College London) with contributions from Andrew Farrant (British Geological Survey) Introduction 1 The Lincolnshire Limestone is an important regional aquifer. Pumping stations at Bourne and other locations along the eastern edge of the Fens supply water to a large population in South Lincolnshire. Karst permeability development and rapid groundwater flow raise issues of groundwater source protection, one of themes of this excursion. A second theme concerns the influence of landscape development on the present hydrogeology. Glacial erosion during the Middle Pleistocene re-oriented river patterns and changed the aquifer’s boundary conditions. Some elements of the modern groundwater flow pattern may be controlled by karstic permeability inherited from pre-glacial conditions, whereas other flow directions are a response to the aquifer’s current boundary conditions. Extremely high permeability is an important feature in part of the confined zone of the present-day aquifer and the processes that may have produced this are a third theme of the excursion. The sites to be visited will demonstrate the rapid groundwater flow paths that have been proved by water tracing, whereas the topography and landscape history will be illustrated by views during a circular tour from the aquifer outcrop to the edge of the Fenland basin and back. Quarry exposures will be used to show the karstification of the limestone, both at outcrop and beneath a cover of mudrock. Geology and Topography The Middle Jurassic Lincolnshire Limestone attains 30 m thickness in the area between Colsterworth and Bourne and dips very gently eastwards.

  • Social Protest and Public Order
/ The Agricultural Labourers' Standard of Living in Lincolnshire, 179o-184o: Social Protest and Public Order By T L RICHARDSON Abstract In trying to establish what happened to the standard of living of the rural labouring classes in Lincolnshire two statistical variables, the cost of living and the earnings of adult male labourers, have been constructed to determine the long-run trend of real wages. The analysis shows that the cost of living was the dynamic variable in the real wage equation and that in the short-run, as during the French wars, volatile price movements had a devastating effect upon the purchasing power of wages. The level of employment and incomes after I815, though varying between upland and clayland areas, was a potent cause of distress and class conflict. In analysing the shift in emphasis from overt to covert expressions of anger, attention is paid to the collective response of the county's ruling order to the threat from below and the mechanisms of control that were used to restore law and order. N RECENT years an increasing amount can be satisfactorily resolved. 2 In order to of systematic research has been directed understand the precipitating factors I towards quantifying changes in rural behind the upsurge in overt and covert living standards and identifying the princi- forms of rural protest, for example, much pal causal factors behind the rise in social more statistical information is required on unrest during the later eighteenth and the relationship between wages and the early nineteenth centuries. • Bourne Abbey Church TF 097 200
Bourne Abbey Church TF 097 200 © Wendy Parkinson The WW1 Roll of Honour is wall mounted inside the church of St Peter and St Paul, Bourne. It consists of a dark coloured wooden box with 2 opening half doors, however these doors are now stuck in the open position. The box is shallow in depth and is oblong shaped, with the long sides mounted vertically. Two half doors are hung on the box, one to each side of it. At the bottom of the box is a lip which protrudes out from the background and sides but which would be flush with the doors if they were shut. Beneath this is a plain wooden oblong of the same wood as the box, and beneath that a small shelf which at the time of recording held a small metal vase. Above the box is a shaped section of identical wood, both edges of which slope slightly outward, and above this a triangular section and upon this is written, in gold lettering, 'For God, King and Country'. Above this section is a inverted V shaped roof arrangement which ends just beyond the outer edges of the triangular section beneath it. There is a metal cross in the centre section of the box, the words 'Greater love hath no man than this' are written in red above the horizontal arm of the cross, extending to both sides of the vertical arm. There are names recorded upon the left half door, black lettering but with the first letters (and initials) in red, the centre section below the horizontal arm of the cross and to each side of the vertical arm of it and the right half door.
