Bourne Abbey Church TF 097 200 © Wendy Parkinson The WW1 Roll of Honour is wall mounted inside the church of St Peter and St Paul, Bourne. It consists of a dark coloured wooden box with 2 opening half doors, however these doors are now stuck in the open position. The box is shallow in depth and is oblong shaped, with the long sides mounted vertically. Two half doors are hung on the box, one to each side of it. At the bottom of the box is a lip which protrudes out from the background and sides but which would be flush with the doors if they were shut. Beneath this is a plain wooden oblong of the same wood as the box, and beneath that a small shelf which at the time of recording held a small metal vase. Above the box is a shaped section of identical wood, both edges of which slope slightly outward, and above this a triangular section and upon this is written, in gold lettering, 'For God, King and Country'. Above this section is a inverted V shaped roof arrangement which ends just beyond the outer edges of the triangular section beneath it. There is a metal cross in the centre section of the box, the words 'Greater love hath no man than this' are written in red above the horizontal arm of the cross, extending to both sides of the vertical arm. There are names recorded upon the left half door, black lettering but with the first letters (and initials) in red, the centre section below the horizontal arm of the cross and to each side of the vertical arm of it and the right half door. The words 'The heroic dead' are in red beneath the centre section list of names. Dimensions - The box section is 0.76m high and 0.54m wide, the triangular section above is 0.23m high. The plain wood beneath is 0.23m high. Each half door is 0.76m high by 0.26m wide. It is made of a light grey stone and has black lettering. The memorial is shield shaped, and is basically an oblong (long sides vertically mounted) witth the bottom edge dropping towards a point. Atop the oblonng is a smaller oblong with the ends sloping inward toward the top, while on top of this is a semi-circular shape. Dimensions - This memorial could not be measured accurately, all measurements are approximate. The memorial is about 0.6m high by 0.6m wide. [John Stennet measured it at 21½ by 24 inches] © Michael Peck To provide and place a memorial tablet at the western end of the Soutth Wall of the chancel of the parish church of Bourne in memory of Harry Allen formerly of Bourne who was killed in action in France on the Tenth October 1916. That the said tabblet is to be of marble and about three feet by about two feet and to bear the following insccription namely:- © Michael Peck The memorial to Harry Allen is wall mounted within St Peter and St Paul Church, Bourne. It basically consists of a white marble tablet with black lettering superimposed on a dark grey marble background. The background is basically an oblong with the loong sides mounted vertically although there are 2 small oblong protrusions in the same stone at the bottom of each long side and further up at a point about 3/4 of the way along the length, there are a further 2 protruding from the bottom edge, almost at each corner. Above tthis main section is an oblong of the same stone, not very deep and laid horizontally so that the ends overlap the edges of the stone below. Above this is a similar slab of stone but the ends of this are slanted outward from the bottom toward the top so that the top overlaps the stone beneath. Above this is another oblong slab, smaller than the one beneath and so stepped inward with yet another smaller oblong slab above, again stepped inward. Above this is a moderately large stone cross of the same material. The centre white stone is basically an oblong, long sides mounted vertically and it is smaller than the darker stone so that stone frames the white stone. Above this oblong is a smaller one, stepped inward over the stones centre. Dimensions:- This memorial could not be measured accurately, all measurements are approximate. The total height (includes cross) was about 1.5m, while the height from base to top of slab with ends sloped outward was about 1.0m, its width was about 0.6m. The white centre section was about 0.56m high by 0.4m wide. ©John Stennet UKNIWM Ref: 54187 The Roddgers Memorial is wall mounted within the church of St Peter andd St Paul, Bourne. It consists of a polished metal plaque attached to a dark green marbled stone. The stone is oblong shaped with the long sides mounted vertically, although there is a semi-circle of the same stone at the top centre. The metal plaque is shaped identically but is slightly smaller so that part of the stone shows around all edges as a frame, the lettering is black and there is decorative etching around all sides just in from all edges, there is a badge in the semi-circular section of the plaque. I could not tell what this was exactly. Dimensions - this memorial could not be measured accurately, all measurements are approximate. The stone is about 0.6m high at the highest point, about 0.5 at the main section and it is about 0.5m wide. The plaque is about 0.45m high at the highest point, about 0.35 at the maiin section and about 0.35m wide. © Michael Peck Letterinng - In memory of Private Bennett Rodgers of the Volunteer Active Service Company, 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment who diied at Rietfontein, South Africa on the 23rd February 1901.
