The WW1 Roll of Honour is wall mounted inside the church of St Peter and St Paul, Bourne. It consists of a dark coloured wooden box with 2 opening half doors, however these doors are now stuck in the open position. The box is shallow in depth and is oblong shaped, with the long sides mounted vertically. Two half doors are hung on the box, one to each side of it. At the bottom of the box is a lip which protrudes out from the background and sides but which would be flush with the doors if they were shut. Beneath this is a plain wooden oblong of the same wood as the box, and beneath that a small shelf which at the time of recording held a small metal vase. Above the box is a shaped section of identical wood, both edges of which slope slightly outward, and above this a triangular section and upon this is written, in gold lettering, 'For God, King and Country'. Above this section is a inverted V shaped roof arrangement which ends just beyond the outer edges of the triangular section beneath it. There is a metal cross in the centre section of the box, the words 'Greater love hath no man than this' are written in red above the horizontal arm of the cross, extending to both sides of the vertical arm. There are names recorded upon the left half door, black lettering but with the first letters (and initials) in red, the centre section below the horizontal arm of the cross and to each side of the vertical arm of it and the right half door. The words 'The heroic dead' are in red beneath the centre section list of names.

Dimensions - The box section is 0.76m high and 0.54m wide, the triangular section above is 0.23m high. The plain wood beneath is 0.23m high. Each half door is 0.76m high by 0.26m wide.

© Michael Peck The memorial to Harry Allen is wall mounted within St Peter and St Paul Church, Bourne. It basically consists of a white marble tablet with black lettering superimposed on a dark grey marble background. The background is basically an oblong with the loong sides mounted vertically although there are 2 small oblong protrusions in the same stone at the bottom of each long side and further up at a point about 3/4 of the way along the length, there are a further 2 protruding from the bottom edge, almost at each corner. Above tthis main section is an oblong of the same stone, not very deep and laid horizontally so that the ends overlap the

edges of the stone below. Above this is a similar slab of stone but the ends of this are slanted outward from the bottom toward the top so that the top overlaps the stone beneath. Above this is another oblong slab, smaller than the one beneath and so stepped inward with yet another smaller oblong slab above, again stepped inward. Above this is a moderately large stone cross of the same material. The centre white stone is basically an oblong, long sides mounted vertically and it is smaller than the darker stone so that stone frames the white stone. Above this oblong is a smaller one, stepped inward over the stones centre.

Dimensions:- This memorial could not be measured accurately, all measurements are approximate. The total height (includes cross) was about 1.5m, while the height from base to top of slab with ends sloped outward was about 1.0m, its width was about 0.6m. The white centre section was about 0.56m high by 0.4m wide.

BOURNE HOSPITAL

Dedication of the Peace Memorial

And Opening of Enlarged Premises

CEREMONY PERFORMED BY THE MEMBER FOR THE DIVISION

Wednesday last was a memorable day in the history of Bourne, when the consummation of the Peace Memorial was witnessed, together with the opening ceremonial in connection with the extension of the Hospital. The enlargement of the premises consists of two new wards capable of accommodating four beds each. The Men’s Ward (on the ground floor) is designated the “Peace Memorial Ward,” and over the door to the outside entrance is the following inscription, in carved and gilded letters : - “Erected 1920. In grateful remembrance of those who gave their lives in the Great War, 1914 – 1918.” Above the Men’s Ward is the new Women’s Ward, named the “Ingle Ward,” in recognition by the Trustees of the late Mr. Ingle allocating £1,00 of that gentleman’s estate to the Hospital THE DEDICATION SERVICE It was a beautiful summer afternoon, with a sprinkling of clouds which made the heat less aggressive, and there gathered outside the Hospital a large concourse representative of all classes of the community, ready to pay their tribute to the glorious dead, and to participate in the Dedication service. Canon Grinter took the major part of the service, the Rev. J. A. Halfpenny (Congregational minister) read an appropriate portion of the Scriptures, and the Rev. J. C. Jones led in prayer. The Baptist Pastor (the Rev. G. Morgan) was absent through indisposition, and the Wesleyan minister (Rev. T. F. Watson) was attending a conference out of town, During the course of the dedication ceremony, The Vicar said: “Let us pray, brethren, unto the Lord our God that he may enlighten this Hospital with His loving kindness, and grant unto its inmates the protection of His Devine Majesty . . . O Almighty Father, we beseech Thee to accept this Memorial at our hands, commemorating the men who have been found worthy to offer their lives in the service of their country, and to consecrate this our gift to Thy glory and ourselves to Thy service.” ,Bless ٠ ٠ In the faith of Jesus Christ we dedicate this new wing to the Glory of God O Lord, the work of Thine own hands, and grant that all they who with pure intent have given O Lord, the Healer of all our diseases, who ٠ ٠ .their aid to the raising of this building knowest how the sick have need of a physician, grant that all those also whom Thou hast

called to be sharers with Thee in Thy work of healing my exercise their art, and may receive Thy Heavenly aid in all their ministrations. O Almighty Father look with Thy mercy upon Thy servants who have been called to attend the sick and suffering and grant to them the guidance of Thy Holy Spirit, that with patience and tenderness, wisdom and strength, they may faithfully minister to thee in this Hospital.” The hymn “O God our help in ages past” was sung, to the accompaniment of the cornet, played by Mr. H. N. Patterson, who subsequently gave the “Last Post” which terminated the dedication HOSPITAL OUT OF DEBT The ordinary ceremony for the opening of the extension of the Hospital, as described in the first part of this report, was then proceeded with. For the occasion there was an improvised platform with the President of the Hospital Committee (Mr. A. E. K. Wherry) in the chair, supported on either side by Lady Florence Willoughby and Lieut.- Colonel Hon. Claud H. D. Willoughby, M.P. The president remarked that his distinguished visitors on the platform needed no words of introduction to a Bourne audience, for they belong to a well known family who for generations had always had the welfare of the town of Bourne at heart, and who had generously supported all local charitable works (Hear, Hear). He felt sure that they would give Lady Florence and the Member a warm reception for so graciously coming to Bourne that afternoon to open this hospital, part of which had been erected as a Towns Peace Memorial, in memory of those who had died for their country and of those whose served in the Great War. Proceeding, Mr. Wherry said he was pleased to announce that the Hospital as they now saw it, was entirely free from debt. (Applause). This was something to be very thankful for, due to the money which the townspeople had subscribed, together with gift from the Red Cross. But when he had said this, it did not mean that they did not require any more money, fir it would be recollected that they had postponed the provision of an operating theatre until such time as they had obtained the money. Quite a considerable sum would be required for that object, but it had been decided not to make a general collection for the Hospital that day, on account of the generous way the mass of the people had subscribed, but any persons wishing to make any donations, large or small would be given the opportunity to do so. (applause). Mr Wherry, amidst applause, then called upon the Member to say a few words. MEMBER’S TRIBUTE TO MEN WH FOUGHT Lieut.-Colonel the Hon. Claud H. D. Willoughby, M.P., who was cordially received, said that those who had listened to the dedication service all hoped that the blessings which had been poured on their efforts would be fulfilled, and that in the future this Hospital would become a great benefit to the town and district, (hear, hear). Listening to the singing of the beautiful hymn which they had just sung, would recall to many of those who had been on active service the times when they were in danger, and how at such times our faith was a real help to them in their difficulties, there was one consolation that all those who gave their lives for their country knew that they were fighting for justice and a right cause, and the memorial which they had dedicated that day was most fitting to the memory of those who had died and suffered for their country (hear, hear). Bourne had played a noble part in the war, not only for the large number of her sons which went to the call of their King, but for the magnificent manner in which the ladies chiefly tended the sick and wounded who had been on the battlefields. He felt sure that in the future in these new wards the same loving care would be bestowed upon those unfortunate people whose health needed attention. Proceeding, the Member said that he could, with all sincerity, praise the noble deeds of their men, whether on land, sea or air and he would like to give credit to those brave men of the Merchant service who by their heroism had kept this country from starvation in the darker days of the conflict. He could not but feel proud and express his pleasure at the achievements of the County Regiment. He wanted them to think not only of the past, but of the present, for today many of

their soons were doing duty in various parts of the world. Let them not be forgetful of what these men were doing in the service of their country. Concluding, the Member called to mid a couple of lines which he thought fitted the situation, “Our country’s welfare is oour first concern And who promotes that best, best proves his duty” Every one of those men who had given their lives and whom they honouring that day could well use these lines for an epitaph. (applause). UNLOCKING THE DOOR Before proceeding to unlock the door of the new entrance into the extended building. Lady Florence Willoughby said she took it as a great honour to be associiated in the opening ceremony of this memorial to those brave men who gave their lives for ttheir country. Lady Florence then descended from the platform and unlocked the door, annd the assemblage followed and inspected the new wards. Many had no idea that the extension was of such a useful character and many were loud in their praise at the utility of the extension. Subsequently teas were served inside the Hospital, and also in the Hospital grounds, and quite a large number attended. It is pleasing to record that the whole of the refreshments were generously given by the ladies of the town. The tea committee and the ladies who assisted were : - Mrs. W. J. Gilpin, Mrs. J. Galletly, Mrs. G. C. Ingoldby, Mrs. J. T. Holmes, Mrs. C. C. MacLeod, Miss Bell J.P., Mrs Measures, Mrs. T. Hall, Miss Mee and Mrs. R. A. Collins.
