Expansion of the Reformation in Europe and the rise of Pietism •Luther's teachings became the dominant form of Protestant Christianity in Northern Europe, not only in Germany, but throughout Scandinavia. •In the later Middle Ages, the cultural ties between these two regions, which were linked by trade and similarities in language, had been strong. •Scandinavia was sparsely populated, and had only a few universities. •Many Scandinavian scholars regularly enrolled in German universities and thus became familiar with the Reformation teachings in the early sixteenth century.2 •When they returned to their homelands, they brought with them knowledge of Luther's ideas, and encouraged the monarchs of Sweden and Denmark to adopt evangelical reforms. •In 1527, the Swedish Parliament voted to break its ties with Rome, and a council held two years later prepared the way for a reform of Sweden's church. •In Denmark the pattern was similar, although the adoption of Lutheranism occurred slightly later. •At first, a national parliament meeting at Odense granted recognition to Lutherans, while protecting the rights of Catholics. 3 •Denmark's monarch, though, favored Lutheranism, as did the nobility, who stood to benefit from the crown's abolition of Catholic monasteries and the sale of their lands. •After a brief civil war, Protestantism triumphed in Denmark in 1536. •The king called one of Luther's close associates, Johann Bugenhagen, to Denmark to advise him on how to institute Lutheran reforms. •These new Evangelical Lutheran churches adopted essentially conservative reforms. 4 •By 1539 the Danish church became a national church with the king as the head and the clergy as leaders in matters of faith, much like the Church of England. -

First of all, we must understand that it is not man who finds the way to God by eventually working his way to Him. No, rather, it is God who finds His way to man’s heart. God begins early, already in baptism. We can never think highly enough of our baptism. In baptism I became a Christian, because in that moment I was met by God’s election. In the same way that God once chose Israel, in the same way that he again and again intervened in its history at definitive points with a decisive message, in the same way that He came down to earth in the person of Jesus Christ to go to the lost and once again establish the covenant with them - in the same way God has also in baptism broken into my life’s story, given me a share in the life of Christ, made a covenant with me, and said that He has chosen me for participation in His kingdom. -
Fundamentalism and the Church Of
I The Aim of this Book WHAT IS Fundamentalism? It is described in the Oxford English Dictionary (Supplement, 1933) as ‘a religious Movement which became active among various Protestant bodies in the United States after the war of 1914-18, based on strict adherence to traditional orthodox tenets (e.g. the literal inerrancy of Scripture) held to be fundamental to the Christian faith: opposed to liberalism and modernism.’ The Concise Oxford Dic- tionary attempts a definition: ‘the maintenance, in opposition to modern- Fundamentalism ism, of traditional orthodox beliefs such as the inerrancy of Scripture and and the literal acceptance of the creeds as fundamentals of Protestant Christian- Church of God ity.’ The word had certainly come into use in the United States by the year 1920. In The Christian Graduate (I.V.F., London) for March 1955, GABRIEL HEBERT, D.D. Dr Douglas Johnson gives an account of its origin, and says that it was probably coined by the editor of the New York Watchman-Examiner, who in his editorial for July 1st, 1920 describes as ‘fundamentalists’ those ‘who mean to do battle royal for the fundamentals’. As he goes on to show, the term ‘the fundamentals’ had been made familiar by a series of booklets which had been issued between 1909 and 1915. Wittenberg Influences on the Reformation in Scandinavia by Simo Heininen, Otfried Czaika Wittenberg was the most important source of inspiration for the Reformation in both of the Scandinavian kingdoms, the Danish kingdom and the Swedish kingdom. In both kingdoms, the authorities played a defining role in the Reformation, though it proceeded very differently in these two Early Modern states. The Reformation became securely established most quickly – both politically and in terms of church law – in the Danish core territory. Sweden, on the other hand, was de facto already a Lutheran country before 1550, though it did not become Lutheran de jure also until the last decade of the 16th century. Particularly in the peripheral parts of Scandinavia (especially Norway and Iceland), the Reformation went hand in hand with closer political integration in Scandinavia and it was therefore adopted rather reluctantly by the population. Notes Indices Citation Political Background From 1397, the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden were united in a personal union (the so-called Kalmar Union) under Danish control (ᇄ Media Link #ab). In the early-16th century, the union was approaching its end. There were increasing tensions between Denmark and Sweden, the latter being governed by regents from the House of Sture. In November 1520, Christian II of Denmark (1481–1559) (ᇄ Media Link #ac), the last union king, was crowned for a second time in Stockholm. After the coronation festivities had been concluded, a heresy trial was staged with the help of the Archbishop of Uppsala and the accused were the supporters of the Sture party. -
European Churches Talk About Dialogue with Other Religions
European churches talk about dialogue with other religions The Church of Sweden is hosting an event at which more than 50 representatives of Anglican and Lutheran churches within the Porvoo Communion will gather together for discussions in Sigtuna this week. During the meeting in Sigtuna, on the theme Growing Together, the churches in the Porvoo Communion will discuss various issues, including dialogue with other religions as a challenge in the social environments of their churches. The churches in the Porvoo Communion have previously held a consultation about dialogue with other religions and will hold another such event in 2011, to which representatives from other religions will be invited. This meeting is the Porvoo Communions consultation of church leaders, attended by bishops and elected representatives and convened once every four years. Each delegation, with two to three representatives, a bishop and/or person in a managerial position and an elected representative, are chosen from each church and vary from one meeting to the next. The representative of each church also participates in the Porvoo Contact Group. More than 50 delegates from Anglican churches in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Spain and Portugal, and from Lutheran churches in Finland, Lithuania, Norway, Iceland and Sweden are expected in Sigtuna. Representatives of the Lutheran churches in Denmark and Latvia will attend as observers. The Church of Sweden will be represented by Archbishop Anders Wejryd, Secretary General Lars Friedner and Britt Louise Agrell from the Central Board. The meeting will take place at Sigtunastiftelsen on 18š1 March. The theme is Growing Together, and the meeting will conclude with a mass celebrated in Uppsala Cathedral and lunch with Archbishop Anders Wejryd. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. 61 Liturgical Singing in the Lutheran Mass in Early Modern Sweden and Its Implications for Clerical Ritual Performance and Lay Literacy Mattias Lundberg If ever there was a category of music in Swedish history that perfectly illustrated the relevance of the scholarly dictum “normaliter non in actis”—that whatever is normal and expected in a given context is naturally absent from its written documents—it is that of liturgical chant in the early modern Lutheran Church of Sweden. In fact, the spirit of the opposing sentence from Roman law, “quod non est in actis, non est in mundo” (whatever is absent from the documents is also absent from the world), may in itself account for the slanted historiographical view of liturgical music in Sweden that the discipline of musicology has often presented. -

Ninna Edgardh Embracing the Future: The Church of Sweden in Continuous Reformation The whole world followed the events in Lund, Sweden, on October 31, 2016, when for the first time a joint ecumenical commemoration of the Reformation took place between the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and the Roman-Catholic Church. A photo distributed worldwide shows Pope Francis and the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden, Antje Jackelén, embracing each other. The photo contains both hope and tension. The Church of Sweden tries to balance the tension between its heritage as ecumenical bridge-builder, launched already by Archbishop Nathan Söderblom a hundred years ago, and its pioneering role with regard to issues of gen- der and sexuality. These seemingly contradictory roles are hereby set into the wider context of the journey Sweden has made from the time of the Lutheran reformation up to the present. A uniform society characterised by one people and one Christian faith, has gradually transformed into a society where faith is a voluntary option. The former state church faces new demands in handling religious as well as cultural diversities. Leadership is increasingly equally shared between women and men. The Church of Sweden holds all these tensions together through the approach launched on the official website of a church in constant need of reform.
