Abstract :AnannotatedcatalogueoftheandofNor thern Europe, with marked occurrences for each country (Iceland, Norway, DenmarkwithoutGreenland,Sweden,Estonia,Latvia,Lithuania)andadminis trativeregionsofadjoiningRussia(Kaliningrad,Murmansk,Karelia,St.Peters burgandPskov)ispresented.Thecatalogueincludesaltogether513specieswith commentsonseveralnewspecieshithertounrecorded.Therecent northward expansionofsomeCentralEuropeanspeciesisbrieflydiscussed. 1.Introduction No catalogue of Northern European Auchenorrhyncha (hereafter shortly named “hop pers”)haspreviouslybeenpublished.Existingcataloguescoveringpartsofthearea(Vil baste 1974, Ossiannilsson 1983) have become old and new species have been found in more thorough taxonomic research and faunistic inventories. New trapcollecting tech niqueshaveincreasedthematerialinmanyofthecountriesinthe21stcenturyandrevealed anorthwardexpandingtrendofmanyspecieslivingincentralEurope.Wehereintendto updatetheknowledgeofhopperrecordsofthecountriesandotheradministrativeareasin NorthernEuropeandtodiscusssomeoftheexpandingtrendsinthefauna.

2.Geographicconcept TheconceptofNorthernEuropeincludesinthisworkalltheNordiccountries,viz.Ice land,Norway,Sweden,FinlandandDenmark(excepttheautonomicareaofGreenland),all theBalticcountries,viz.Estonia,LatviaandLithuania,andtheadjacentRussianareasto

3.Presentknowledgebase Iceland Nonationalcollectingactivityofhoppershasdeveloped(ErlingOlafsson,pers.comm.). Mostdata stemfromtwosources,thecollectingoftheSwedishentomologistC.H.Lin droth(reportedbyOssiannilsson1947b)andtheGermanentomologistM.v.Tschirnhaus in2001(reportedbyRemane,2005).ThetotalknownspeciesnumberfromIcelandthus sumsonlyto8. Norway The bulk of previous hopper information has been compiled by H. Holgersen (1944a, 1944b,1945,1946,1954)andF.Ossiannilsson(1943,1962,1974,1977,1978,1981,1983). RecentcollectingactivitiesinNorwayarerelativelyhighincludingcollectingwithdifferent AnnotatedcatalogueoftheAuchenorrhynchaofNorthernEurope 35 traptechniques.Publicationsofnewspecieshavealsobeenfrequent(Huldén1982,Hol gersen1985,1992,Raatikainen&Ylönen1988,Hansen&Borgersen1991,Olsen1999, Hansen2000,Endrestöl2008).Asoftoday291hopperspecieshavebeenrecorded. Denmark Mosthopperrecordingsin Denmarkwere madebyN.P.Kristensen (1965a,1965b)and L.Trolle(1966,1968,1973,1974,1982)andhavebeencompiledintheappendixofOs siannilssons book series (1983). The recentmost list of Danish hoppers was given by L.Skipper(2001)andincludesnonewspeciessinceOssiannilssonswork.Someadditional recordsofexpandingspecieshavebeenpublishedontheweb.Thereisaverymodesthop percollectingactivityinDenmarkatpresent.TheknownhoppernumberforDenmarkis now295. Sweden ThebasisforhopperknowledgeinSwedenhasbeencompiledbyF.Ossiannilsson(1947a, 1978,1981,1983).Afterwardsrecordsofnewspeciesandregionalfindingshavebeenpub lishedbyG.Gillerfors(2002,2003,2005,2008).Therecentcollectingactivityislow,but Swedishtrappingprojectshaveproducedasubstantialamountofnewmaterialofwhich onlyaparthasbeenanalysedyet.Swedenholdsthehighestnumberofrecordedhoppersin NorthernEuropewith417species. Finland RegularlistsofhoppershavebeenproducedformorethanacenturyinFinland(Sahlberg 1871,Lindberg1935,1947,Linnavuori1969a,1969b,Huldén&Heikinheimo1984).The latestoverviewwasgivenbyG.Söderman(2007).Collectingactivityhasincreasedsincethe establishmentoftheExpertGrouponHemiptera.Extensivetrappingschemesincluding lighttraps(seeSöderman2005),Malaisetraps,colorpansandpitfalltraps(seeSöderman 2007)havebeenusedinthefaunisticinventoriesofthe21stcentury.Thenumberofspe ciesrecordednowamountsto401. Estonia TheEstonianhopperfaunawassurveyedformanyyearsbyJuhanVilbaste,whostartedto publishanationalbookseriesofthegroup(1971).Itwas,unfortunately,nevercompleted, butrecordsofEstonianspecieswerelatergivenbyhiminhisarticleontheLatvianand Lithuanianfauna(1974).Inthelate20thcenturyandinthebeginningofthe21stcentury someFinnishentomologisthavecollectedasmallmaterialofhoppersalsofromnorthern Estonia,butthismaterial,locatedintheZoologicalMuseumofHelsinki,doesnotinclude manynewspecies.CollectingactivityinEstoniaisnowadaysmodest.Thenumberofspe ciesrecordedfromEstoniaisnow305. Latvia ThebasicknowledgeofthehopperfaunawasgivenbyVelce&Danka(1970).Later,Vil baste(1974)revisedsomeolddataandaddedasubstantialamountofnewspeciesbasedon hisfieldcollectinginthe1960´s.SincethenonlyVarzinska(1983)haspublishedonLatvian leafhoppers.Thelatestlistpublishedontheweb(Spungis&Kalnins2002)doesnotac knowledgeVilbaste´sworkandisthereforemisleading.Thereisnoactivityonhopperre searchinthecountry.However,hopperrecordsfrompitfalltrappingofthecoastalgrey 36 G.Söderman,G.Gillerfors,A.Enderstöl dunesin2006haverecentlybeenpublished(Söderman &Spungis2008).Presently,333 speciesareknownfromLatvia. Lithuania OldknowledgeofhoppersisfoundinFlor(1861)whoidentifiedmaterialfromthecollec tionsofGimmerthal(1846).SomeofFlor´srecordshavebeenrevisedbyVilbaste(1973) whoalsoundertookextensivefieldcollectionsinLithuaniainthe1960´s.Theresultswere publishedmuchlater(Vilbaste1974).Morerecentdataonlystemfromlighttrappinginthe CepkeliaiNatureReservein2007(Söderman&Dapkus,unpublished)andshortfieldvisits in the southeastern part of the country (Söderman & Rintala, unpublished). The species numberforLithuaniaisnow331. NorthwesternRussia OldinformationonhopperrecordsfromNorthwesternRussiaisdifficulttofindinlitera turebecausetheformerinformationbaseonlyincludedmajorsubdivisionsoftheSoviet Union:NorthwesternRussiaextendingeasttotheKomiRepublic,WesternRussiainclud ing the Baltic countries, and Southwestern Russia including parts of Byelorussia and Ukraine(seee.g.Emeljanov1964).Recordsfromparts,whichinprewartimesbelongedto FinlandsuchasPetsamointheMurmanskregion(Lindberg1932),Kareliaproperandthe IsthmusofKarelia(Sahlberg1871,Lindberg1947)areavailableforthesubdivisionused here. Furthermore, the new inventories made by Anufriev (2000a, 2000b) and Dmitriev (2002)intheMurmanskregionareveryuseful.Thenumberofhopperrecordsforother different administrative regions in this catalogue is low, as present collecting interest in theseregionshasbeenlow.Manyoftherecordsinthecataloguehavebeenproducedwith trappingusedincooperativemonitoringbetweenFinlandandRussiain19932008. TheonlyreportofthisactivityhasbeenpresentedbySöderman&Goltsova(2005).Asof now104speciesareknownfromKaliningrad,allrecordedbyA.P.Shapoval&Söderman in20072008,108fromtheMurmanskarea,192fromRussianKarelia,171fromtheLen ingradregionand109fromthePskovregion.

5.Discussion ThetotalnumberofrecordedspeciesinNorthernEuropeisnow513,whichislowif compared to e.g. Germany, holding more than 600 species alone (Nickel & Remane 2002).ThenumberofspeciesdecreaseswithlatitudeandisolationfromcoresofPleisto ceneglacialrefugia(e.g.Iceland).ThenumberofspeciesinNorthernEuropeis,however, increasingatafastpace.Thirtyonenewspeciesfortheregionhasbeenrecordedinthe 21 st centuryandforsomecountriestheproportionofnewspeciesincreases1020percent ofthefauna. Thereareatleast3majorexpansionroutesforleafhopperstoNorthernEurope.One goesfromNorthwesternGermanyovertheDanishislandstotheeasterncoastofKat tegatt(e.g. Graphocephala fennahi, Acericerus heydenii, A. ribauti, Tremulicerus fulgidus, Eupteryx decemnotata, E. florida, Zyginella pulchra, Acanthodelphax spinosa, Eurybregma nigrolineata ), an otherfromwesternRussiaoverPskovandtheLeningradregiontosoutheasternFinland (e.g. Xanthodelphax xantha, Calamotettix taeniatus, Psammotettix slovacus, Mongolojassus sibiricus, Balclutha arhenana, Igutettix oculatus ).AthirdonegoesovertheBalticcountriesreachingthe Baltic isles (Gotland, Alandia) and the southwestern Finnish coast (e.g. Kelisia confusa, Acanthodelphax spinosa, Acericerus heydenii, Fieberiella septentrionalis, Idiocerus similis, Tremulicerus distinguendus, Viridicerus ustulatus ). This route might consist of two different routes, one overLithuaniaandLatviareachingGotland,andoneoverEstoniareachingFinland,but thepresentknowledgeofthefaunaoftheBalticcountriesdoesnotallowustodrawany conciseconclusionofthis,yet. Aboutonethirdoftheexpandingspecieslivesonornamentalbushesandtreesnot indigenoustoNorthernEurope.Nevertheless,noneofthesespeciescanbeconsidered importedtotheregion.Theyhaveadaptedtoliveinanthropogenoushabitatsandsome areshowingtrendsofhostplantchangetowildspecies,e.g. Igutettix oculatus from Syringa to Fraxinus and Tremulicerus distinguendus from Populus alba to P. tremula .
